First I will say to you that it takes manpower and allotted funds to keep the roads hot and track down all of the complaints that are received. Many times there is no validity behind the reports and people are calling out of spite or just because the people live in poverty. There is no crime in being poor and that is not a valid reason to remove a child from the home. To remove the child(ren) there has to be a substantial reason. DFCS is not in the business of taking people's children. The mission of DFCS is to preserve the family (although I myself feel that the guidelines that are set forth ENABLE the dregs) I WILL agree with the drug testing issue that you have brought forth. There is a company out of Albany that will go to the residence within 24 hours to perform a drug test if a requisition is turned in but of course then you must hope the parent or guardian is available. How would you suggest that "things like that" are done?

If you are concerned become a foster parent. There are so few places to put children.

as to drug testing. cut off there card see how fast they show up at the office. there you go test them as they walk in. problem solved no notice given. As for manpower they know who the bad parents are they just choose to overlook. mainly because theres not too many places to send kids. and the options are sometimes much worse.

They are supposed to help children but this county does not. I pray they have a change in their approaches and staff.

I've been a FP for many years. I've worked with the offices in the surrounding counties and have to say that although I'm not a DC resident, Decatur is one of the more responsible. There is no way to "police" the activities of every person in the county. People have rights and again, the true FUNCTION of DFCS is to PRESERVE the family unit no matter how terrible the parents may be or what acts they have committed. I personally do NOT agree with many of the policies and I certainly don't like this co-parenting initiative but again, I DO desire to help the children so in doing so, have to adhere to certain guidelines set forth by the agency. I agree there are some very frustrating loopholes in the DHR policies and the system and people know how to work it and manipulate it just like every OTHER government agency that exists. As in every profession, there are people that truly DO NOT belong in their jobs. That is universal and not specific to DFCS. If you are REALLY concerned, I suggest you get involved with CASA or become a foster or adoptive parent. It is really EASY to pass judgement on a situation when you are on the outside looking in with NO experience to pull from.

DFCF---I know of three children who need to be taken away from there mother. The children can't sleep at night because mom and boyfriend are to busy entertaining all of there friends. The children are always in trouble at school due to lack of sleep and the mother has received letter after letter from the school because she can't get the children to school on time. The children have degressed in school since moving here and the mother has been notified none of them will pass the current grade. The grandparents and the father live in another county and can't come to Decatur every day to make sure they are getting home work. What really makes me sick is the fact that mother thinks it's ok to leave her children with this person she is living with, that shows what kind of a mother she really is. I would not leave my children with another man or women. I guess DFCF is waiting until the children are raped and beaten before they can step up. What is it going to take to protect all the innocent children in this world.

People have rights. DFCS cannot just bust up in a place and snatch people's kids. There job is to keep the family together if at all possible. The only time they can become involved is if/when the kids are in danger or being outright neglected. IF they are clean, dressed appropriately, and there is food and shelter being made available to them you can pretty much just forget about DFCS removing them from the home. If the school has a problem, they will call it in.

Yes, I think that there are a lot of sad stories and a lot of terrible situations. I have seen a lot of it first hand and have shook my head because there is no cure for sorry parenting. I know it seems like DFCS does nothing but they MUST have a cause, not just a suspicion and can't go on hearsay alone. Lice is considered to be a common malice among small children and it is not going to be a game changer. If the mom is leaving the kids alone for periods of time, then that is another matter. If you see this happen, maybe you should call the cops. If she is leaving them with a "whoever" however, there is not too much to be done unless he is on the sex offender registry and then it may meet the criteria for child endangerment. Did you look the person up? You should be documenting things as well and why do you not ask to speak to the supervisor or go up there and speak to the supervisor in person. If there is already an ongoing "case" then maybe you can call CASA as it is their function to speak up for the children's rights/well being.
