what he did to daniel provence was very uncalled for. there was no reason in doing what he did. he grabbed him by the shoulder pads called him a worthless piece of shit and threw him. he is a FRESHMAN kicker who had never been put in a situation like that before. anyways what is 1 missed x-tra point to 16 incomplete passes by his son steven bench (superstar)? did anybody see him jack steven up and talk to him like that? i dont think so. steve bench should be fired.he has no right talking to kids like he does. i understand its football but to keep putting them down like that is uncalled for. if anybody thinks what he did to daniel was bad you should hear him at the practices at the high school football team has out at the new high school. please. feel free to let me know how you feel about this situation.

I agree with you 100%!!!! He should be fired for doing/saying that! I am sure he wouldn't let/want someone to tell his son the same thing! I understand it's football and the coaches are tough on the players, but this is uncalled for! I am sure Daniel felt horrible enough about not making the kick, but dang that's only one play out of the entire game. One player doesn't win or lose the game for the team! I am really unsure of why Bench is even coaching, because when he was head coach he couldn't do the job, so they moved him to an elementary coaching position, then I thought he retired. Now let's see, he is the "energy guy"-which he sends out emails(during football seaon) to teachers reminding us to turn off computers, and turn our off in our rooms! Oh but, he will be around the schools in January-May! I think this is the one of the largest waste of funds DCBOE has!! He gets paid to do this!! Anyway, I will get off of my soap box about that! BOTTOM LINE HE SHOULD BE FIRED!

I didn't see all that going on during the game. But kudos for the young kicker for getting the job done coming in behind such a great kicker such as adams. I hope he keeps his head up and continues to succeed such as Adams has. This young kicker has a lot of potential. If Bench did such then he should be handled accordingly.

Are you really serious????(Mom or Dad Aunt or Uncle) we know it's you. If you have a problem with the way your son is treated then talk to the coach, not the community. This is football not tennis. He missed the dam kick..He needs to be be disciplined no matter if he is a freshman or not. And Yes, somebody needed to be on the QB's ass but Bench is not his position coach; Guyton is and he is up in the booth instead of on the field. I think they need to be yelled at a whole hell of a lot more...the way they drop passes, miss throws, miss tackles... it goes on and on and on.

I played under Bench in the early eighties. He is a butthole now, and he was a butthole then, but sometimes thats what it takes to make kids work to improve themselves. If you really want to fire somebody, it should be that high priced Pilcher. He has had the time and the tallent, and has done nothing with it.

ARE YOU really serious "Real Talk"????

More people than the kid's family are upset if these allegations are true, I assure you. This is HS football, NOT Professional Football. Teachers and Coaches are bound by a code of ethics we are to work by.

If your theory is correct, then it should be okay in your eyes for me to YELL MORE at the students in my room who don't do their homework and who don't achieve like they should. Right? After all, they are “students,”“it’s their job to study and learn”--“they missed a question, they should be disciplined no matter if he is a freshmen or not“.“Mercy, the way students are unorganized, forget assignments, don't study, break rules, it goes on and on... I should be YELLING A HELL OF A LOT MORE!"

Discipline? Yes. I believe completely in discipline!

But the when a kid messes up in my classroom and fails a test that they "SHOULD" have been prepared to do, and I (again, assuming the previous allegations are true) put their F in front of them, then push them back in their seat and say, "You're a worthless piece of sh*t!" ...
No two ways about it, I WILL BE FACING SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES and most likely losing my job and certificate.

Yes, discipline is a good thing and needed by students. Firm, consistent discipline. But so is respect. Respect for the student and respect for the Adult/Teacher/Coach.

Football or no football...there is a code of ethics that should be followed.

You know, there are a lot of athletically talented boys on the team. A LOT. And people are wondering why the talent is being wasted and we aren't seeing more victories? Perhaps someone needs to look at the morale and mutual (or lack of) respect the players and coaches have for each other?

Bench is good people, and so is his wife. If someone wants to raise a wussy boy, have your kids try out for a competitive knitting team and just leave football to the less sensitive folks and those who want their boys to have a pair. If you are mad about Steve´s position, grow your own pair and complain at the next board meeting, or put your name first on a petition and carry it around with you.

Actually he is his jackass sons position coach. His son is the back up punter (only because his dad is the special teams coach) so Steve should get onto him. He is a disgrace to the footballs coaching staff and should be fired. Him treating Steven like a superstar is ridiculous. The kicker is only in 9th grade, give him a break. Not to mention when Steve was the coach he won 2 games. He should be fired ASAP

I was at the game and saw what Steve did to Daniel. It was uncalled for as is the way he will not go on the field after the game to congratulate the other team if he does not win. What kind of example is that for the kids? GHSA promotes good sportsmanship. When a coach refuses to show that to his team as well as the other team after a loss it not only a disgrace to Decatur Co Schools but also to the team. Coaches like teachers (of which I am one) are there to motivate. It is hard to be motivated by being shoved (I saw that) and spoken to like he was. It is my hope that this community will not stand for this. We are here to support our kids not tear them down before they get started! Daniel, I am proud of you and will continue to cheer you on every Friday night regardless!

It was very obvoius by Bench's actions and facial expressions that what was said was not a word of encouragement. I have also witnessed this at prior games. Yes, it is also true that when his own son makes a bad play, he smiles and pats him on the back to encourage him. Everyone needs to start paying closer attention. Perhaps this type of "encouragement" is the reason the kids are not winning.

I was not at the game so I have no comment on what did or did not happen. But if you take a ride around Bainbridge and Decatur County you will see that it is all about sports here. What is the City/County doing to put people to work? Look around, there are new ball fields, new tennis courts, new docks but what is being done to create jobs? Look at the new high school it is centered around sports. Teachers are fed up with teachers not being replaced and having to assume more students. I was told in one academic area when a coach/teacher left, he was replaced BUT when another teacher left in same academic area, the other teachers had to assume the students. Gotta replace those coaches at the expense of the academic teachers who want to see kids excel. Wake up, Bainbridge and Decatur County, it is not all about sports! There is story after story of kids going off to college to play sports and after 1-2 semesters they are back home at Bainbridge College. They have to be taught more than sports. They need to be taught what life is all about and how to get through it. It is about winning in the game of life not a baseball game or football game.

Character building should be part of football. Academics should come 1st and foremost then if you have the resources for sports OK.
No telling what the "energy" personnel is making. But I question whoever made that decision to create that position & he is probably being paid mega bucks. I feel like a certified teacher has enough common sense to know how to cut off a light. Use that money to hire more teachers. Keep watching 'cause those test scores are going to go down ... then what is going to happen when funding is lost.
I urge you to go to the polls in November - it is time for change but not Obama's change.

I really thought it was part of the self mortification that happens in team sports and that the self is rebuilt latter and character is infused in the simplest terms. Sort of like boot camp for GIs.

Are you kidding me? If you knew anything, you'd know that Daniel practices kicking everyday, and loves it. He will go out on the weekends and kick by himself to get better. If you were even at the game, or knew anything about football you would know that the ball was tipped in the kick. GO WATCH THE FILM. All the football players on the team have seen this. There are different ways of punishment, but grabbing Daniel by his jersey and pushing him back and telling him he is a worthless piece of shit, is not the correct way. MAYBE if his son would have punted the ball more than 17 yards in the game it wouldnt have been so close in the end. Does anybody know that Daniel is a great punter? But of course Bench wants his son to do everything. Ok Coach lets get on your sons ass about that, or maybe all the fumbles. Daniel is 14, and has kicked for one year now, if you think he is going to be perfect his first year kicking on varsity, go watch a different highschool play, better yet get out there and do it yourself. Also, whoever you get your information from is wrong, the parents have not gone to the community, the community has come to them willingly. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT.
