Special meeting of Bonham ISD Board of Trustees set Aug. 31

Notice is hereby given that on Monday, August 31, 2009 , at 6:00 PM the Board of Trustees of the Bonham School District will hold a Special Meeting at the Bonham ISD Administration Center, 1005 Chestnut Street, Bonham, Texas 75418.

Bonham really needs to pass a bond. The kids deserve it. All of the schools are falling down. The longer the people wait the more it will cost. A concerned tax payer who will vote yes.

Couldn't agree more! I hope people will realize how important this bond is to the future of Bonham and will get out and vote YES to the bond! It is crucial that it pass for the sake of our schools, our children, and our community!

And how is all of this supposed to be paid for? Bonham has many, many homesteads that have taxes frozen for the over 65 exemption, so the burden is going to come on the remaining property owners and watch the appraisal district shoot all the valuations up sky high.

No, you could be right here. We should just let the school fall in on the kids and then get the insurance money....**rolls eyes** If we don't do something now to improve the schools, we are going to lose people from the area(TAX BASE). Your taxes will go up in the long run and you'll still have the crappy schools. This is so long overdue it's not even funny. Suck it up and do the right thing, right now.

I agree we need to pass the bond, for the kids they need better. Anonymous have you been to the schools lately? I.W Evans is falling apart,When Finley Oats has anything for the parents to attend for their Children there is not enough room in their gym for for the parents,children and don't forget if you invite Grandparents to see the kids do a x-mass play or anything for that matter there is just not enough space.
Everyone wants Bonham to grow well guess what people buy houses where the good schools are.If we don't look out for our kids and the future generation of kids. All Bonham will have is a older frozen tax base and more younger family's will move out and you will never see change here.I pay taxes on my house and land as my parents and Grandparents did so everyone could get a good education. I will be saying a big YES on the bond.

Umm, yeah I have been to the schools "lately". I've got one in Finley Oates currently and one in IW Evans currently. IW Evans is not "falling apart". Explain what you mean by "falling apart" and exactly where that is. If that was the case, don't you think the city's building offical would have closed it by now?

I have no faith that the BISD will properly use any bond money. What happened on the last bond that passed narrowly? Do you know? We got us a new field house for the football field and all kinds of bells and whistles out there, and then they shortchanged the improvements at the high school.

Do you know they paid several hundred thousand dollars for land out on 82 W to build a new high school? Overpaid by about three times what it was and still is worth, and doesn't even have halfway decent access to it.

I don't see any way voters in this town feel the need for a $40 million bond in Bonham, Texas.$40 million and you aren't even getting a new high school, just making alterations to it!!

For once I am in total agreement with Anonymous on this one.$40 million is a lot and voters here I don't think will ever go for that. Don't get me wrong, I have kids in the school system as well but I too have no faith in the BISD spending that much money correctly. When I saw the amount of $40 million I thought surely they were wanting to building a new school but nothing of the sort.

Well, they do want to build a new IW Evans school, but I still don't know how they expect the property owners to foot this bill and support it after the last debacle they put us through.

Did I give you any indication I had a problem with the homestead? What a ridiculous question that is. Read my post again.

The point for this one that is just on here constantly trying to start petty, meaningless arguments is that Bonham has a very large amount of properties that have the over 65 exemption and the school taxes are frozen. Now how hard was that?

I've read your post, and it's ...as usual...ambigious with a cynical tone, with no clear cut idea. It would be interesting to know where you get your information. I seriously doubt that MOST property owners in Bonham are over the age of 65.

North Texas eNews posted a follow-up article about the bond election. It lists all of the improvements planned for. It also says that
"For a $50,000 home, the increased tax to cover the bond payment will be $148.75 annually or $12.40 per month. For homeowners 65 years and older who have applied for their taxes to be frozen, this bond can not increase their school tax bill."

I think that answers how we will pay for it. A house that is valued at $100,000 will pay about $25 a month.

The article also talks about 4 meetings planned to give folks a chance to discuss the bond.

Where did I say that "most property owners" have the over 65 exemption. Are you having some sort of problem following along?

@ anonymous2, those dollar amounts were based on across the board values, once again like I've been trying to tell some that can't seem to understand on here, that doesn't take into account all the properties that have taxes frozen, so the numbers are not close to being accurate.

KXII has a story up now on their site about this. The supt. is now saying the average increase will be about $360 per year now. Like I tried to tell you, the numbers being talked about earlier were flawed and this number is still not accurate if you calculate it out, or everyone better get prepared for a big increase on their valuations which will in effect make that average increase up to what it will really take to pay this off.
