Q: Is it a sin to be depressed? The doctor says I have a chemical imbalance in my brain that he can treat with medication, but a friend of mine says I shouldn't do this because I just need to pray and have more ...

I never read anything in scripture that says depression is a sin. I thougth it was either a chemical or emotional problem.

If depression is a sin I'm in big trouble! Ha Ha!
Depression is a result of our imperfect state, God
is not going to punish us for something we don't fully have control over. Prayer will definitely help but there is nothing wrong with taking med.s.

Chemical imbalance? They DO have medicine for that. Take your meds and pray to God to deliver you from it. When the woman with the issue of blood touched the hem of Christs garment, He didn't rebuke her for going to the doctors but rather said, "Thy faith has made thee whole" Doctors are here for a purpose. But keep your faith in God.

Depression is sin. Anything that causes harm to the body which is the Holy Spirit is sin... stress is also sin... and sadness that weakens the body is also sin.

Uhhhhh pito, we ARE human after all. We are to cast our cares and worries on Him but sometime some people get caught up in the cares of this world. He knows this too. No one is perfect. You are about to be a father. You WILL worry.

And don't forget, Wayne, Luke, one of Christ's disciples, was also a physician (Colossians 4:14)

Exactly. I think he might have been Pauls personal physician? Or something to that effect. I think tradition has it that Paul suffered from bad eyesight. Maybe Luke took care of him for that?

And the joy of it all is that in Christ, all things are possible and when we pass from this earth into eternity, we will have a perfect body and all of our tears and sorrows will be taken away forever.

Our pastor mentioned this in a sermon a few weeks ago and he said it is definitly not a sin to be depressed.
He was speaking about Elijah and what happened after his confrontation with the prophets of baal in 1 Kings 18.
After his victory there and calling down the fire from heaven he ran away and hid and in 1 Kings 19.4. it says,
.........And he (Elijah) prayed that he might die, and said " It is enough, Now Lord take my life, for I am no better than my fathers."
Then he lay down and slept.

Elijah comes across here as someone who is very depressed and is looking for death. What does God do? Does He tell him how bad he is? NO!! He feeds him, gives him a drink and tells him to rest. Then God reassures Elijah that he is not alone.

Depression is not a sin, it is a natural occurence that with help and treatment can be cured. To tell people they are sinning because they are depressed is likely to make them worse and IMO is not what God wants. He tells us to Bear one anothers burdens, not add to them.

Depression can be a chemical imbalance. There are many drugs that can help chemically depressed people.

Sometimes people just get the "blues." I get a bit depressed as fall comes along. I just love spring so much.

I have been depressed in my life BECAUSE of sin. Unconfessed sin in the life of a Christian can cause him to be spiritually depressed. The depression is not sin, but in certain circumstances can be the result of sin.

Lay off pito. He's already acknowledged he was a little hasty in saying what he did. We make mistakes and are not perfect like SOME people on here.

Bravo for your last post, Wayne! You do have a nice side!**smile**
There are basically two types of depression. Chemical depression is an imbalance of one or more chemicals in the brain. It can be treated with medication and sometimes talk therapy or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)is used in conjunction with the meds.
Situational depression comes from major changes such as divorce, job loss, etc. Also treated with meds, but talk therapy that helps you learn to cope with the troubling situation(s) is very effective.
Bottom line, depression is no more a sin than diabetes, and is just as treatable.
Don't accept guilt for something that is not yours. What I mean is, if you are feeling guilty about being depressed, drop it like it's hot. You have no more guilt for being depressed than the person who develops any other type of disease.
