Bell scandal delays Baldwin Park bribery investigation
By Thomas Himes, Staff Writer Posted: 09/03/2010 12:58:21 PM PDT
The county will prosecute bribery charges against a Baldwin Park code enforcement officer after prosecutors finish sorting out the scandal in Bell, the county prosecutor in charge of public corruption cases said Friday.
An investigation into Bell's public finances has kept prosecutors in the District Attorney's Public Integrity Division busy, said Dave Demerjian, the division's head deputy.
Demerjian said prosecutors are devoting "a tremendous amount of effort" to Bell.
In the meantime, Baldwin Park Code Enforcement Officer George Rodriguez remains free on bail, according to sheriff's booking records.
Rodriguez allegedly took bribes from a massage parlor in exchange for information on police raids, police said.
Attempts to locate a telephone number for Rodriguez were not successful.
A July 12 police sting operation at the Green Spa Massage Parlor led police to arrest Rodriguez on suspicion of taking bribes and obstruction of justice, police said.
Baldwin Park police turned the case over to prosecutors July 23, Baldwin Park police said.
Rodriguez, 30, was a 10-year city veteran and was the city's senior code enforcement officer, said his supervisor, Marc Castagnola, the city's community development manager.
Officials placed Rodriguez on paid administrative leave after his arrest, officials said.
Police said they believe Rodriguez took bribes for about a year before he was arrested.
The alleged scheme was reported to police by an employee of the Green Spa Massage Parlor, police said.
Green Spa is one of two massage parlors in the city. It is located at 13020 Francisquito Ave.
The city's other massage parlor has not been implicated in the alleged bribery, police said.
During a police raid on Green Spa, a worker told officers they paid Rodriguez money in exchange for information about police raids, police said.
A few weeks later, police officers set up a sting operation and arrested Rodriguez, police said.
The city's code enforcement office has not received any complaints about the parlors, or issued either of the establishments citations this year, Castagnola said.
Rodriguez remains free on $25,000 bail, according to sheriff's booking records.

Well George it's time to expose the corruption in BP in fact I am willing to bet the DA let's your charges drop if you give up the big fish you worked for. Think about it !!!!!!!!!
