I just called the police department to report a stray dog roaming around with blood on his coat and was told that we have no one to come and handle this. The police can come and destroy an animal that has hurt someone but not do animal control. The person who volunteered to take on the job of animal control backed out at the last minute. This is a situation that could very easily become dangerous. Can we not use part of the money saved by buying a used building for the PD/FD to hire someone full-time? Could we pay something to Azle to help us out? My fear is that this big dog could jump my picket fence and hurt my dog. Needless to say, I was shocked to hear that these animals can roam with who know what diseases or aggressive issues and we can't do anything about it. Our police department is awesome and need help as it is, so being dog-catcher tool is asking a lot of them. They need help but I'm not sure how we need to get them that help. Any ideas out there?

The City has already tried all local agencies in the area including Azle. Azle is having problems handling their own animal control. Reno has no animal control. The County will not contract with a City for Animal Control Services. The City used to have Animal Control with North Texas Animal Control but they more than doubled their rates. Chief Towns had a animal control officer lined up who backed out at the last minute. Currently the City is advertising for the position and has received some application. Sending one or two people to Animal Control School is a possibility. Yes, It is a problem. No, There is not a quick and easy fix. We have had several offer to volunteer but nobody has followed through on their offer to assist. As of now, The City is looking for a Part time Animal Control Officer. Hopefully we will have someone on board in the near future. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

When you say no criminal record, do you mean ever, or just within the laste few years. As O am interested however I have been in trouble before but it was over 20 years ago. Would this trouble bar me or someone else from this position?

no I am not saying roaming and dangerous animals should be shot by "heartless bastards", let the PD do it. Why should I suffer and my kids be at risk because someone else is to lazy or to stupid to look after their animals!!!!!!!!!!

For years, Pelican Bay has been and still is the dumping ground for unwanted pets. There have been articles written in the azle news about this problem.
Being that the city has no single person to address the problem people feel that they can let their pets roam free to crap and destroy, attack or become aggressive towards someone property or person.
The city requires pet owners to register their pets but unless they have their collars on, no telling who they belong to.

By TX new laws, a dangerous dog is one who attacks, bites, acts aggressive to another animal or Human and police officers, pet owners, private citizens, etc have the right to defend their own pets and lives at any cost.(Short version of the NEW laws!!)
So anyone who may shot a dog only has to say the animal was aggresive towards them and they were fearful for their safety, dog shot, end of story!!

I just graduated from THE TEXAS ACADEMY OF ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERS last week. Ive sent in my resume and am waiting for a response. I would love to help the city out! I was actually wondering where Pelican Bay places their stray animals? If there is no shelter then the problem isnt just they need an ACO it's much larger then. Does Pelican Bay have a human resources office?

Sorry Spencer, you have wasted your pen, paper and stamp. The city cannot afford to PAY anyone for animal control. From what has been reported, the mayor & a council member are "suppose" to be doing animal control, thus the reason dogs are running wild in the city. The mayor can't put his "drinks" down and the council member can't finish a sentence or a project.
And No to your questions of a human resources office.
There is a shelter which the city uses to "hold" animals for up to 5 days, then they are moved to another facility which either finds them homes or destroys them. The shelter has been inspected and passed as ONLY a holding facility.
To OMG, the vehicle storage area is NOT within or included with the shelter, go look for yourself!!
Spencer, good luck with finding a job but it won't be in Pelican Bay UNLESS you can work for FREE!!!

"To OMG, the vehicle storage area is NOT within or included with the shelter, go look for yourself!!"
I did and would you like to see the photos and quit trying to make a comment on EVERYTHING someone says, the STORAGE lot is where the animals are and breath those nasty emmisions from the vehicles there I don't see how it was even approved for animals for FIVE days now I know the city is doing the best it can or should I say to the best of thier ability but it is still not right.
and you know what I mean (wink wink)
see I look and I pay very close attention
such a shame the bay is in the ruins it is in and no police, fire dept can fix what is wrong here so again we have to pray for a quick fix which we know will not happen but if miracles still happen we at least have hope not to much to go on but I have hope and I pray all does.
AND AGAIN the storage is within the area of the shelter have a look and tell us the feet inches or what ever from the storage lot and the shelter.
INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW.
hey why don't you and I have Tea and Cake one day I truly like your desire to help the bay

How many cars are left in the storage? Are they being driven anywhere for any animals to worry about emmision problems?? If you are so worried about the shelter, then do something about it?
Are there animals in the shelter now? Have any been held lately, by your observtions?
You got pictures, so why didn't you take a measuring tape and do that yourself? So you inquire and get back to us!
Am I not allowed to comment on things? You seem to enjoy. This is still a free country the last time I looked.
I will have to decline your offer for tea & cake, my job keps me very busy, but thanks for the offer (winkwink)
Let's see what you can do to make a difference in the city?

Apparently like some of you said the city doesnt want to fix the problem. I called and spoke with a lady today and she said they have no intentions of hiring anyone due to budget. What was the point of putting up an application online and saying you're hiring if you had no plans to? Totally ridiculous!! Im sorry for all of you who have to live in a city that doesnt care about the welfare of the children and the dogs. I guess they dont realize that by not having animal control peoples lives could be endanger!

The ad for an animal control officer was placed last year without the city's approval and it has never been removed. Sorry it has not been removed but go ask Councilman Leach why it hasn't been removed, he put this it up!

It's not that the city doesn't care it's that the city has NO MONEY! the city can raise your taxes to cover the cost to hire someone, how about this idea? Would you agree to have your property taxes raised to support this position?

Or go ask your mayor, he and councilman Hunter are "suppose" to be doing animal control. Don't you think they are doing a GREAT job? ROFLMAO
