I was a 5 year client of Prairenet Internet of Springtown/Azle until Skybeam bought them out. Almost immediately, the quality of the service went to hell. I was paying for the $59.99 plan because I play internet games and wanted a decent connection. Anyway, after they came out, they said my trees were the problem. The funny thing is that I've had these same trees for the last 5 years and never had a problem in the past. They replaced my equipment (I owned my own equipment I purchased from Prairienet) and that did not solve the problem. They said they would come out and put a taller tower in my yard but when the worker came out, he didn't even have one and told me it wouldn't do any good. It seemed like it was too much trouble for him and he didn't want to bother with it. This went on and on over a period of weeks and finally I found out from some of my neighbors that they were having the same problem. It turned out it was their transmitter on the Pelican Bay water tower that was at fault. They did something to the defective transmitter and the service became usable but nothing near the advertised speeds for the $59.99 plan. I downgraded my service since I was paying for something I wasn't getting and added phone service which kept my monthly price at $59.99. They sent the phone adapter out and I hooked it up. It somewhat worked a few times but the call quality was so bad it was unusable. So now I was paying for a phone that I couldn't use. I tried several times to get in touch of someone so I could send it back, but no luck. They put you on eternal hold so that I would hang up after 25-30 minutes of burning up my cell phone minutes. Over the last two months, the service became totally unusable except rare occasions late at night. Our City Hall and Police Department use their service and have the same problems. Every week I get at least one postcard in the mail trying to sign me up for Skybeam service that I already have. I'm convinced that they have massively oversold their band-with and have to keep doing these mail-out to replace customers they are losing due to them overselling their band-with and their non-existent customer service. I had to purchase an aircard to be able to check my email. My opinion is that good service from Skybeam is just a Sky-Dream, or in my case, a Sky-Nightmare.

Try one source http://www.1scom.com/
Their web site has a list of areas they service, but it appears to be out of date. They cover many more areas than shown on the web site.
Service is great. You do need a line of site to one of their towers, but they are all over the place.
good luck

I also was with Prairie Net and was switched to Skybeam. I hated it. They dissconnected me for a past due bill of $34 and came and got the equipment. This was after 3 weeks of repeated phone calls that instructed me to leave a call back number. They finally called the day after they took the equipment so to reconnect would be the past due $34.00 plus a months service at the new rate of $39.99+ and an installation charge. I don't think so. Hughes Net is available here but I don't know anything about them yet.

The entire month of November we had no service. Since then the speed is way low and several calls have not improved the speed. On Christmas Eve the service went to crap again and has remained poor at best. I have been told som many things that I forget all of them. I wait for 30 minutes on the phone to get through to be told nothing. It is always a tower issue or something. here is the good part. A family member lives 250 yards away and is not having the same issues.

Oh and before the November outage we hade to wait 3 weeks for them to come replace a part. I have started a spread sheet that cover date, duration of hold, who I speak with, and anything told by them. I guess i will contact the BBB.

If your neighbors works, then it's not the transmit tower. You need to debug your end properly before you blame the ISP. Check the wires would be my first suggestion. Unplug and plug back in all connections. Make sure no clips are broken off the wires that hold them in place. If they are, you may need new ends or wiring. Make sure the router you use is working properly. They often slowly burn out or start acting up when left on 24 hours a day. Make sure there is no viruses on your PC. A virus can interrupt or interfere with internet access. If after you do all this it still won't work or acts slow or drops the connection frequently you need a repair technician to make sure your equipment they lease you is working right. If they come out and find nothing wrong, it's most likely your PC that is not working right, and they may charge you for the service call. Most PCs now have built in networking cards that also can burn out or start acting up. You can try a plug in wireless USB network card on the PC and see if that fixes it. If you are using wireless access on the PC now, you may also be getting interference from something else in the house or next to the PC. Try it in a different location and see if that helps.

That's about it, I hope one of these suggestions helps you! Good luck.

I was a customer of a small fixed wireless company they bought recently. Since then, I have had a horrible time. It takes 40+ minutes to get technical support on the phone. Then, when I finally get them on the phone, they,re useless...

I could tell you all the details but I don't want to. If you don't believe they suck, just order their service...

Uh, no really, don't. It's really bad, trust me....

I too used to be an ECC customer in the Elgin, TX area. My connection went out three days ago and no one at Skybeam can tell me anything. They just play an automated message that they are aware of outages in my county and the customer support just keeps saying service will be restored, "soon".

If someone knows a decent alternative in the Elgin, TX area I'd love to know about it. I too am a gamer so decent connection speeds are important to me...not to mention an isp who gives a crap about their service being out for days on end.

I just recently had problems with skybeam...I had 2 different techs come here and tell me they can't upgrade my equipment...then last week after the final straw of being out of service for 9 days they sent a tech that actually worked fr corporate, not a sub contractor..his name was michael williams, he had me upgraded and going in about an hour, he told me they just quit using the sub contractor because they were not doing it right they were trying to hit the main tower in keller not the tower on our water tower....try again with the techs it's better now

Prairienet (now Skybeam) used the cheapest INDOOR ethernet cables they could find to wire up the antennas OUTSIDE to your houses. This cable was NOT rated for outside use AT ALL and sun and rain exposure would literally dissolve the thin plastic shielding exposing the bare wires to the elements after a few years. I found this out and saw it for myself when Skybeam came out to check the system one day at my house. Not only that, but they had also stapled through the wires at many places, also destroying the wiring in the process of installing it. And this wasn't even some cheapskate subcontractor doing my original install at the time, it was the OWNERS SON doing it! So I don't doubt that they also used the same crappy INDOOR ethernet wire to also wire up the various transmitter towers wherever their service was available. Skybeam, on the other hand, uses a heavy duty round black coax designed for outside uses on all their installs and repairs, too. So if you have an original Prairienet install and are have any connection problems, like while it rains, go outside and look at your cable to the antenna. If it's white or gray and looks just like the indoor cable and it's cracked on the outside at all, you need to call and have Skybeam replace it.

After 3 solid days (and still continuing) of no service with Skybeam and can't apparently reach a breathing human at tech support, these guys are horrible. I've been a business class customer well before they bought out Unite Wireless and it's been nothing but a headache since. My business is suffering because of their inability to at least have a backup plan, totally unacceptable.

Maybe all of the customers should band together and file a class action suit against Skybeam. If it causes loss of business you can sue for that as well. There may be an attorney willing to do it without cost. I know that with no service and no one to speak with, I would consider that grounds for getting out of my contract. I'd take them any equipment I had and be done with them. Does your contract have any mention of what their responsibility is in regards to this "outage?" I sure wouldn't be paying for those missed days. Let them try to sue me - it would be made public their lack of concern and lack of communication to paying customers with a contract for service. It's just me, but I think you may have grounds for some compensation. I guess it would be based on the contract for service that you signed.

I have had no problems with my internet service until after Skybeam bought it out. I have spent hours on hold to be told that it would take 3 to 4 weeks to schedule a service call. This means I would go completely without internet. They said they couldn't get anyone out sooner unless it is an emergency. What is an emergency? When you run two businesses out of your home and it is dependent on internet, does that count? I spent time on my cell phone which racked up my bill for this month and multiple trips back and forth to town to get on the internet at a friend's house. The cost for me to find internet service while I went without for two weeks was three to four times the cost of the monthly service. They said they would credit my account, but only for the time I went without internet. Later, I learned that they were supposed to, by law, send out a notice either by email or in writing notifying everyone of an authentication process. Come to find out, it wasn't even my fault..it was their failure to send authentication notice. Did I mention that I talked to three different people that did all of the following: 1) told me they would mail me a part 2) told me they would not do a service call unless I paid for it 3) told me they never mail parts out and that they would deliver and replace it but I would have to pay if it was my faulty equipment. In the midst of waiting for the service call, a magical authentication email came after two weeks WITHOUT service. I followed the directions and VOILA! My internet works again...do NOT recommend this to anyone! Run as fast as you can-if you are dependent upon the internet, this is NOT for you! You may save money initially, but in the long run it will cost you! Any time it is down, expect two to four weeks before it is repaired. Furthermore, the service people on the phone are incompetent and none know what the other is saying! Run and pay for Hughes net! You will be glad you did! Horrible service! Even worse customer service and no service tech! My neighbor called two days after I did and he got a service call two weeks before I did! What is wrong with this picture!??? Everything!!!
