Retired CSM recalls Ft. Devens and a long military career

Full story: Nashoba Publishing

At an Open House at the Fort Devens Museum, Trustee Charles Gordon introduced guest speaker Robert Delia of Pepperell as a "soldier's soldier" who became a "veterans' veteran." Delia was a command sergeant major in the U.S. Army at Fort Devens when he retired 32 years ago, concluding a 30-year military career.

During my service as the Ft Devens Provost Marshal Operations Sergeant (MP's), CSM Delia was the Post Sergeant Major. He was an inspiration to all of our law enforcement personnel and to all the soldiers stationed at Ft Devens. It was my privilege to serve with him and wish him well.

I arrived in Vietnam in June of 1969, assigned as an infantryman with the 2/28th of the Army's First Infantry Division. It was "no picnic" and we all felt like no one appreciated what our unit was barely living through.
Two month's later things changed immensely for the better, and we had no idea why....Until we met our new Battalion Command Sergeant Major, Yup his last name was Delia and the description of him being a "Soldier's Soldier" is more accurate than you know. The soldiers of the 2/28th Black Lions will continue to thank him forever.
