Is The Driving Age In MA Too Young?

Driving is a sign of independence that most teens can't wait for, but is 16 1/2 the right age to grant that privilege? "I know when I first got my license, I shouldn't have been driving," said ...

It isn't the age of the driver in any case. There are 16 year olds who are very capable of operating a motor vehicle. It's a dispute over responsibility and experience. Even if you move the driving age to 20 years old, those drivers won't have had the experience necessary to drive. It's a learning process. The reason 16 year olds get in more accidents is beacuse they don't have enough experience behind the wheel, but changing the age isn't the solution. Perhaps more drivers education onroads? In theory, there are elderly people who don't even have to take another road test to get their license, just an eye and reaction exam to have it renewed. Should they be behind the wheel of a car? Not all. It is also a matter of responsibility and caution of the driver. There are irresponsible drivers in all age ranges that drive recklessly. It's not just new drivers.

increase the schooling of drivers, teach them more then how to take a turn and make 3 point turns. Teach them to control a car thru acceleration, turning and stopping. Knowledge helpa stop over-aggressive driving, and lack of ability when under stress.

I agree with Jennifer. She has a good point and, most importantly, something so back up her claim. My brother's just learning to drive and even though he may not be very good, it's because he's learning. But I'm sure that he's going to get better. No one starts out being a master behind the wheel, but they have to learn at some point. Why make their parents or guardians shuttle them around untill they're 30 then give them a car and I can promise you they'll be just as inexperianced as a 16 year old

i think that is age raising thing is a load of crap
poeple dont get that in all of the accidents that happened, manly wasnt the teens fault
it was mostly the fault of "responcible adults"
i want them to keep it the way it is becuse the raising the age wont make the driver more experienced
so it wont matter
i think more time behind the wheel will make all the difference

Raising the age is nonsense and will accomplish nothing. It would be nice if recklessness and carelessness dissipated with age, but unfortunately that is not the case. There will always be some reckless people out there and that is a risk that all of us must accept every time we drive on the road. Raising the age just discriminates against young people and inherent in doing that is the assumption that older people are more responsible behind the wheel which is ludicrous.

I think we should adopt Florida's tradition of allowing dead people to drive.

i am 13. I need to have a car when i am 16 and one half. My family needs money and i need to get a job, and make a living for my family. I hope they do not raise the driving age. I feel responsible enough to follow the rules just as much as any adult, and I know what is right and what is wrong

Excellent point Joe. Kids do even at 16, have to make a living. people forget that. I worked at 15 and having a car as soon as possible was part of grtowing up and becoming an adult.

Some people dont want you to become a adult, or at least think you dont needto do so until your 18 or 21. Maybe they forget being young.

The KEY work from Ashlee is "Fast". That why people want to raise the age. Fast--drinking--Too young and irresponsible.
Leave the age as is but take the licence away if they prove irresponsible. Just pray is isnt to late.

I live in Australia and like the USA the driving age varies between states. No state here gives a licence to any person under 17 and it is restricted for a period depending on the state. I support 17 as a good age to drive 15 or 16 is ok under supervision.

I think they should let them drive, but make the penalties more severe for MV infractions.
