Couldn't help but notice the general "down on your heals/ down on your luck" malaise that seems to be part of the town fabric these days. Just pull up a seat anywhere on Main Street and observe the assortment of dumpster divers, pregnant and teen moms and the mentally ill. Notice how no one owns or wears a suit and tie or a dress? It would seem that Shirley has become a magnet for Section 8 and WIC recipients who sport more tattoos than common sense. All that is needed is a strip joint for crack whores to perform at night and a tattoo parlor catering to the homeless. And oh yeah, still trying to learn that combination half-dressed walk/ stumble/ drooling known as The Shirley Shuffle down along Main Street. Wish me luck!

There is not neccessarily a homeless problem in Shirley but rather, the town has a very substantial number of Section 8 units..... more than most of the surrounding communities which makes Shirley a very attractive place to live for the mentally ill and others who live on the margins of society and choose to be unemployed and live off of welfare. So the problem is not homelessness... it is just that the residents look that way.

Just wondering but why is no one defending the town on this issue or at least offering an explanation or a rebuttal? Apparently it really is that bad in Shirley?(Silence=agreement).

It is no secret that the town has allowed itself to become a magnet for Section 8 and all of the problems it brings which is why we moved out. Shirley is not a place for the hard working middle or upper classes but rather it wants the welfare queens and pregnant teens and all of the government money that it brings. The town is in a slow downward spiral and decaying in front of our eyes and no efort is being made to stop it.

Gee, I frequently ride through Shirley on my motorcycle and from my perspective it seems like a lovely town. I guess I never ride down Main Street.

Maybe you guys could form a posse, round up all the folks that you think you're better than and haul 'em over to Lowell.

When I see folks like the ones you describe, I think to myself "There but for the grace of god go I".

Well that is just the point.... most people are just "passing through" and on their way to better places. You have to stop and just sit anywhere along Main Street down at the bench or the variety store and give it an hour and count how many mentally ill/ drugged out/ homeless/ section 8 grubbers who wander the streets. You can't see if you don't open your eyes......
