When students in Reenie Keith's class enter The Bromfield School as sixth- graders next year, they'll have strategies to fend off possible bullying by older students, they said, thanks to an anti-bullying program they've been working on this year.

I think I'm missing something in this approach.

So, if someone steals something from a kid, they should just let the person have whatever was stolen and walk away? The thief should simply be left to believe that s/he is allowed to take whatever they like, with no consequences? They'll just feel empowered to add more victims every day.

And, if someone calls a child 'fat'(or 'a slut' in the Prince case), whether the child is fat or not, that child should say 'Yes, I am fat'. At which point, the person calling names will now have more ammunition, knowing that the victim will roll over and accept the verbal abuse. The more times that the victim agrees with the abuse, the more they will believe it to be true of themselves (whether it is or not -and- in some cases, it is - as in the case of being overweight). This will lead to damaged self-esteem, not any kind of self-confidence or strength.

This approach empowers agressors and creates victims.

I don't get it either. I'm old school. I think you have to fight back, reasoning with a bully will never work.

Anti-bully programs need to put less emphasis on "ending bullying" and more instruction on how not to be the target of a bully. This is NOT blaming the victim, but understanding that there will always be bullies and therefore, keeping one's self safe.
