We as residents of small rural towns need to support the Governor's goal to prevent these big trucks from using rural roads to cut across the state. That is what the thruway and 390 are for. Pay attention to the number of trucks that go by your house and it is clear that they are not for local delivery purposes. In the Governor's words "they are destroying the nature of rural life". These roads were not built and were never intended as truck routes. The noise they make and the danger they cause is terrible. Contact your sheriff's office and tell them you want this to stop.

Well I live on a back road that never used to see semi traffic at all and it shouldn't as the road is not rated for that kind of weight. My road has gotten torn up really bad from them. It's not a short cut for the truckers, it's just they are trying to avoid the police. I have called the town officers and they have told me to start getting the license plate numbers or the name of the company off the truck. This road was discovered by the truckers when the salt mine went crazy a few years ago and trucks were lined up on every single road leading to it.

"the road is not rated for that kind of weight"
If it's truly not rated for big trucks then it is illegal for them to use it and signs should be posted saying what the road is rated for (3 ton etc). If they are posted then I agree with you. "It's not a short cut for the truckers, it's just they are trying to avoid the police" Why would they be trying to avoid the police? As the wife of a truck driver I can honestly tell you that most drivers are just looking for the shortest route to get to their destination, nothing more. If you've noticed, the Deisel prices are MUCH higher than fuel prices and the drivers (along with the companies they work for) are trying everything they can to keep their expenses down as much as you and I are. Truckers have every right to be on roads that are rated for their weight and if they are forced off those roads their fuel expenses will become so high that you will see prices for EVERYTHING they haul going up. You may not realize what that entails, but it is anything from Food to building supplies. I for one don't want to see the cost of everything rising more than they do already, do you? |

And I suppose that ALL trucks out there are only carrying the load they are supposed to? Just look at how many avoid the thruway when the weigh sites are open. Your husband may be one of the honest ones, but not all are. And I am not talking about a paved highway such as route 63, I am talking about a back road with only tar and stones and flimsy little culverts instead of heavy duty drains running under them. And unfortunately the weight limit of the road is posted, however the posting of signs does not follow through when coming through stop signs or turns on the same type of backroads. It is only posted when traffic would first turn off from the main road. Not sure if I have stated this without losing people here. And unfortunately as it is a country back road, it is not monitored much by police either. We moved to the country, on a backroad to avoid dangerous semi traffic as we have small kids. This road will not be a shortcut and save on their gas, as they will have to drive slower because of potholes and the lack of shoulders on the road, they might actually use more gas by using backroads. No truck drivers live on the road. So other than avoiding police road blocks or whatever, what else could their reason be for having to travel this kind of road?

As someone who has had to deal with the truckers as I pass the salt mine on the way to work, I understand the lack of sympathy for truckers.
On a daily basis I see: - truckers failing to stop at the end of the 390 off-ramp to get onto 63; they regularly roll right through the stop sign EVERY DAY. Some of the trucks are affiliated with the salt mine, but most aren't. - in the morning, they roll right through the stop sign at the top of the hill on 63 by the college (where it merges with Mt.Morris-Geneseo Road) - the trucks leaving the salt mine seldom come to a full stop when leaving the mine property and...roll right through There is NO moral or legal justification for this, and I have called the police regarding it. Toss in the blatant speeding, tailgating of passenger vehicles that DO obey local speed limits, and it's a wonder that there haven't been MORE deaths on 63. |
