I hope the citizens of Avon are aware that the government is again actively working to take their money in the name of children, so they can give it to the teachers.

Isnt anyone interested in this? I dont live in Avon, but if I did I would not vote for the referendum! Lots of hidden numbers in the whole school systems books.

I am opposed to this referendum and will vote NO. This is nothing more than a cash and power grab in the name of children. This school corp administration is good and getting better at lobbying. The ACSC is lobbying hard for this "tax increase". To the uninformed their arguments are very convincing. People need to do their homework and inform themselves about the facts here.

Actually, the teachers haven't had a pay increase in over two years, and will not be getting one with the tax money.

It is interesting to note Avon wants more money from the public and yet Mark Buckleys wife works at one of the schools and has her job, Stephanie DeWeese, daughter of Pam DeWeese board member has her job, and Gary Brinkman's wife is still working for the system and he is President of the board. Also the high school has been on academic watch for the past five years and failed in 6 of the last 8 years to pass AYP, last year miserably failed 9 out of 25 categories. 40 percent of the high school's students taking language and math assessment FAILED the test, and the SAT composies stink. This is the failure of teachers/administrators/Second ary school curriculum head Peggy Clark. Get rid of the fat. The school system also has 6 secretaries in the transportation department making 175 thousand a year and benefits plus three supervisors. Dr. Ogle makes over 200K a year with salary and benefits NO NEW TAXES Avon. Do you get it?

WRONG This is to keep good teachers in the classroom which at the elementary, intermediate, and middle would be appreciated. At the high school they need to clean house and get in teachers who can raise ISTEP SAT and ACT scores. They are on academic watch at the high school by the State Department of Education. Time to get rid of Adcock and find out who the generic teachers are and send them packing. This has been going on for over five years at taxpayers expense

OK, Actually, there is a LOT of false information being spewed here. Luckily only like 3 people are reading it. However, Let me just say that I don't understand how families can't spare a few dollars a month to make sure that teachers who make 30,000 a year, if that, don't have to go on unemployment. As if 30,000 is living high on the hog! HA! Even if you go by the average 50,000- is that really exorbitant for people with Masters degrees and student loans that they've taken on to make YOUR kids and community better! Would you rather spend your tax money for them to collect unemployment, or for them to educate your children. Because that is what's at stake, if this doesn't go through, Teachers get cut and your child's class size goes from 25-45. How effective is the teacher that's left going to be now? Avon has been one of the most pro-active districts in cutting spending across the board. When Mitch Daniels wants to cut 4.3 million dollars of the budget the difference has to be made up somewhere, shame on you for being so arrogant to think you can do it better! Have you run for office? do you REALLY know how it works? What does it matter that some of the administration have family in the school system? That just shows a lot of investment in the process! Trust me, no one is getting rich working for a public school! And id you are in a job of ultimate authority, you'd want to be adequately compensated if the onus lied on you!
The real numbers are this:
Administrative and teaching positions were eliminated through attrition,
Personnel costs were cut through 0% pay increases for two years, reduced healthcare costs, and cutting support staff hours,
Reduced utility and other building operating costs.
The referendum seeks to generate $3.4 million the amount needed to prevent more drastic cuts.
The average actual impact is this:
$13.89 per month for a home valued at $200,000.
$4.65 per month for a home valued at $100,000
You telling me you can't forgo your Starbucks a few times to ensure your child's future!!
Do you know why AYP has been low at Avon? well it's simple math - When progress is measured on the percent of improvement you gain to get at 100% success - There's not a lot of room for improvement when you're sitting near 100 to begin with. AYP is only applicable when you are so far from acceptable that progress shows. It's not a fair way to measure. For the sake of arguement, what percent of improvement shows when you go from 100% passing to 100% passing - that's 0 improvement... but 100% passing. Awesome - not something to complain about.
I wish we could RIF parents, If you think the only reason for student failure lies in the hands of teachers and administrators, you are poorly mistaken. If you have undereducated parents that can't help kids with homework, parents who are negligent, or simply have to work 2 jobs to make ends meet, those kids are not being nurtured or followed up on by anyone EXCEPT their teachers. Kids who don't eat breakfast aren't going to test well - Thank God the school system provides them free and reduced lunch and breakfast!
IT takes a village to educate a child. How many of you have stepped up in any way to ensure that this happens? How many of you have donated or participated in the Avon Education Foundation? How many of you are volunteering in the classroom? How many of you are willing to see your property value decrease when the school system fails because you're not willing to join the community? Do you know that 20% of your homes value is tied to the success of the school?
I am curious if you think education is gained by osmosis and it happens by magic? Because it's going to take a Miracle to keep Avon afloat if this doesn't pass - However, I have all faith that if any school district can rise above the ashes of your Vote No ballots, it will be Avon. Let's hope it doesn't come to that. What are you going to do to ensure our children's future, as opposed to selfishly securing your wallet?

Kudos to "Correct the Crazy" - I don't know who you are but thank you for touching on many key issues that should concern us all.
The schools aren't perfect, but sure are darn good!! You only need to look or ask around to find out that many of us moved here BECAUSE of the Avon schools. If you are a long time resident who hasn't experienced the schools in other districts then you may not appreciated what a good thing you have going here. PLEASE get on board and Vote YES. I will give up a couple of STarbucks or visits to Burger King for the sake of my child's - and your child's education, not to mention all of our property values. I appreciate that Avon administrators are trying to plan ahead BEFORE we get into crisis mode like other school corps like FRanklin or Center Grove that are cutting teachers, transportation, programs etc. I have talked to teachers & administrators. I am convinced this is about teachers and our children's education and I believe that is how the money will be spent. Please VOTE YES - our property values and our children's education is on the line.

..... And? That is the structure we live in, public employees are paid and funded by public money. This is not news. Are you saying we shouldn't pay teachers? I hope not!

I have been a volunteer for the Avon Band for over 15 years and I can tell you that I have seen some pretty incredible results. I am not just referring to the countless State and National Championships! The real value of this program lies in the individual learning experiences relative to character building and leadership growth. I agree that communication, math and science cirriculum is the foundation of a good education. However, I also know through personal experience as a youth as well as my volunteer efforts, that after-school programs such as sports, band and other activities teaches social and leadership skills that cannot be experienced in a normal classroom setting.

Look folks! We have experienced tremendous growth in this community over the past 20 years and people have not moved here because we have bad schools. We have a great community and our education system has consistently stepped up to keep pace. Our federal and state governments are trying to suck money out of perhaps the only initiative that gives us hope for the future. We can help counter this by voting "Yes" on May 3rd.

Anyone who is interested in the facts should visit the website ' http://www.supportavonchildren.org/ '. If you still have question then I suggest you contact any School Board member or Dr. Ogle. I know that they are doing the best they can to preserve a bright future for the kids in our community. I also know that they are willing to share the facts even to the naysayers.

I plan to vote "yes" on May 3rd and I am not embarrassed to put my name on it. I also respect the opposing view but I am very skeptical of the alleged facts that has been put forth in this forum especially when those who initiate them are afraid to put their reak name on them. For all I know they are the same person!

Sorry Chuck but if they are doing the best they can to give us quality education then explain the following. 40 percent of high school students taking math and language assements failed. High school students have an SAT composite of 1019. Our high school has only made 4 star 2 of our last 9 years and has been on academic watch by the state 4 or 5 of our last 7 years. We have spent money on the ACL and new field house to the tune of 25 to 30 million dollars with a flood of flat screened tv's put in.

No one disputes that we are growing for the last 20 years but why was Hickory built for 500 kids instead of 750 and was over crowded when it was finished? No one denies that our band is A+ but we don't send our kids to school for band but academics Chuck. As far as the three mentioned, Stephanie M DeWeese is still in the system and still associated with the band. Buckley's wife and Brinkman's wife are still with the school system last cited by school records.

We are 275 million in debt in Avon schools, that comes from the school and they want another 3.4 million a year for seven years. Sorry Cut some of the new teachers. Find out at the high school who can't teach which they should have done about 4 or five yeas ago and replace them asap. Most schools are cutting staff instead of saddling taxpayers with more taxes. Brownsburg and CG in particular have cut staff and from the achievements at the high school some of them could be pink slipped and save taxpayer dollars. This family and hundreds more out here are tired of the waste of tax dollars like building a new 4 million dollar administrative center when it could have added to the old center for half but no the board had to have it's status symbol. This family will vote NO in May.

Teachers didn't get raises for 2 years but administrators did. With his benefits Dr. Ogle is making over 220 K a year Seem right to you. Doesn't to me. If teachers are sacrificing pay raises then so should administration. Also and a BIG ALSO, our teachers benefits HAVE NOT BEEN REDUCED. They have been raised. All you have to do is go to the administrative building and get a Public Access paper and ask how much the administrators in all schools and at the administrative and transportation building at making It is mind boggling. DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Hey Dennis, how many man hours are you taking away from school business while one of those "unneeded" and "extra" secretaries pulls your public information request. Is that really necessary? is that really good use of your tax dollars?? Also, Dr. Ogle has a DOCTORAL DEGREE for crying out loud. and he has the entire school system on his shoulders. Of course he should be adequately compensated. If you just want joe schmo who'll work for less, you're going to get less competency. You have to adequately pay and appreciate your staff if you want the good ones to stick around. I also am dumb-founded that you think cutting a few thousand dollars from one man's salary is some how going to make up MILLIONS OF DOLLARS. That is ludicrous!
This is exhausting!

Mother always said if you want to be thought unformed don't ask. If you want to know why your schools have serious problems ASK for answers. That may be difficult for you to understand. For the last two or three years Avon has opened up it's doors to out of boundary students for a price of course. If you check the 2010 AYP results you will find that the majority who have failed the AYP results are special ed, african american, and hispanics. Could it be our local caucasoids don't know how to teach minorities? Then you have the millions being earned collectively by Ogle, DeKonik, Bowsher, Clark, McMahon, Hise, Robida, Owens, Adcock and his four administrative OPPPPPSSSS who have a 40 percent failure rate in language art and math, 1019 SAT composite averages, and let us not forget the questionable teaching abilities of those who have produce the above results.

BTW would anyone care to venture a guess on how much the school sytem is spending on the collective salaries and budgets for the band, color guard, drum line, and flag corp? Don't think there is anything ludicrous at all about wanting answers especially when they want more of our money and are already 275 million in debt. Hang in there CTC. Maybe you will figure it out. People want quality across the board. From what I see they aren't getting it. Just my 1.00s worth. Inflation.
