Yeah prolly working . Its ok for them to drive cop cars 2 or 3 counties away for a job or where they live . And the tax payers pay for it all . And all you hear is these towns and counties and states are broke . No wonder they are broke stuff like this gas 3 or 4 dollars a gal and we pay for it ..

Shows how much you about this case. In Austin if a Officer works a off duty job, he must pay for his gas to, from and during that job. He must give a reciept for the gas showing he paid for it.

Now I dont know about other counties or cities, but this was discuss in open Board of Works meeting, so at least in Austin they not driving for free. They do drive to and from home but in Austin they dont get to drive to store etc. Only Police business such as training or work.

Do you expect the officers to pay for those needs? Does this mean the workers that pick up our trash should pay for tires , oil changes etc? Our medics? Our postal workers?

You right they dont, but you forget they pay taxes too. But the miles they put on them for off duty use is mininum. Also Do you have any ideal how much OT they do they dont turn in or get paid for? Even if they turn it in they dont get paid OT till after 42-1/2 hours.weird huh? But legal. But it VERY common for any of them to work a hour over or more every day and not turn it in. Its easy to blast them from the outside without knowing the whole story. There good and bad cops just like in every job or walk of life. But all I am saying please get the facts before jumping on them. And maybe if they got paid more they wouldnt have to get a 2nd job to help make a better life for them and ther family. Yeah they picked the job they doing and most know the pay beforehand, but they not complaining about it they go out and get 2nd job to help support theirselves and family.

FYI should get their facts straight too. They get paid very well, most making $16 dollars or more, free insurance, free gas and vehicle to drive. If they want another job, that is great, but compared to the average worker their paid exceptionally well. They should not be driving the taxpayers car to a job they chose to get. As for them not getting paid for hours they may or may not turn in, they should tell the people who need to know and make a case for it. If that does not work, file a lawsuit.

Most families cannot, which is why so many families these days require both parents to work. If the spouse doesn't, than one will have to work two jobs. I don't think they are doing police work at Amazon, only using the taxpayers money to get to another job. They maybe paying for gas, but they sure are not paying for the extra miles and maintenance.

. Does the trash man take the trash truck home? Don't think the medics take ambulances home either. Postal workers honestly I don't know how that works because a lot of them drive their own vehicles but those who use postal truck do not take those home either.

You idiot. Read the post I replied to. Cops drive the vehicles for personal use so yes they should have to pay for the maintenance of the cars. Then it was said if cops have to pay for maintenance should the other county workers. Thats where I made the point that the police are the only ones that use their work vehicles for personal use. So as you put it GEEZ use you brain and try reading and comprehending what you read before you respond.

Free Insurance? You def not talking about Austin then. They got terrible insurance and family plan is crazy high. And you really think 16 bucks an hour is good wages for any police officer? Maybe you need to become a police officer then. Lets see what your take is on it then.

I agree there should be limits when they can drive it off duty, but there more to it then just what you saying. And its not just a Austin thing. Most police dept let them drive off duty and with family. Ausin has several restrictions on their PD. Call Scottsburg, Scott County just for starters to compare. Then check with Seymour, Jackson County etc and see what their policy is.

I not saying alot dont allow them to drive cars off duty etc. Madison has a very limited take home cars. Jeffsonville, has a very liberal policy, as does Scottsburg. I really understand due to budgets and economy restricted them. I dotn agree they should be able to haul family out to eat or grocery shop etc, but if they pay the gas for off duty work I really dont ahve a problem with it. I dont have a problem with them stoping at store on way home with it jsut dont abuse it. I dont think in 3-5 years they keep smae car their off duty driving amount to enough to make a difference on Maint cost. Gas yes, Maint no.

One thing to add, I glad to see this didnt turn into a "you stupid" you a cop lover" etc post. Thanks for everyone to keep it civil.

The trash boss takes his truck home in Austin. The medics on call and EMS supervisor takes their SUV's home. The Region mangers at Circle K take hteir company cars home, but they pay an allowance too. So ther are hundreds of jobs out there with take home cars that dont even have to pay for them.
