Wouldn't it be admirable if our board members were willing to donate their time as public servants and give the money back to the public education system to be used to support teaching materials or something else needed that has been cut? So many professionals serve on boards, and many are uncompensated and actually RAISE money for the organization they help govern. Why is public education any different?

I'd like to challenge the district board members to set an example across the state by giving their board payments back in the form of a donation going forward. The respect they would earn from the teachers and staff and the community at large would be immense. And imagine how much money would be recouped for public education if ALL public school boards did this!

That's just ignorant. What's your REAL petty little complaint about?

I don't think Public Servant was complaining; just stating an opinion on how the BOE could gain a little confidence from the school employees and citizens.

This is most definitely not Coffee County! I know for a fact that CCBOE isn't paid that much!

I don't begrudge the BOE their pay. They put in a lot of hours and deserve some compensation.

However, I DO deeply resent the money that is spent on "curriculum coaches" and "education consultants". The "coaches" are refugees from teaching who still want to make a paycheck in education without actually teaching an increasingly troubled, ignorant population.

The "consultants" are brought in to pontificate and offer mindless, pleasant-sounding solutions to problems that are deeply rooted and defy catch phrase solutions.

And if that solution doesn't work? No problem - the consultant is gone by then, so no one locally (in the CO) catches blame for a failed policy. Bring in a new consultant!

It is a rotten game that is played over and over at great cost to the taxpayers of Douglas County.

Unfortunately the academic coaches are needed to provide resources to the teacher for translating much of the new curriculum in terms that many of the older teachers simply do not want to accept. They must change how they are teaching to deal with a totally new type of student with a totally new learning style. The National Core Curriculum is leaps and bounds over what Georgia was teaching, so there are going to be many students with gaps because Georgia is something like 48th in the country in quality education and rigor. Teachers are trained in the subject and with textbook examples of what happens in a classroom, but we all know that the real teaching comes when they get to the blackboard. You may be able to teach Einstein a few things, but if you can't manage your class and the problems/issues kids bring to school these days, you will not be able to teach a dog to bark.

As for the consultants, check those out with all the sports coaches, FOOTBALL, mainly and the top heavy board administration. THose two places are where our budget takes a hit. Our new coach redesigned the slogan tossing out everything from uniforms to letterhead. That was super expensive not to mention taking over the girl's gym for his indoor football practice field leaving the girls without their Title 9 right to a gym.

I'm not sure where you get the idea BOE members "put in lots of hours"! From the news article, Dr. Haskell admits they have TWO meetings a month, each lasting THREE hours. That's a total of SIX hours a month (x 12) equalling SEVENTY-TWO hours a year!!! That comes out to $267.22/hour for the board members,$302.62/hour for the vice-chair, and $334.03/hour for the board chair! How in hell can they justify that?

Don't get me started about those useless academic coaches. They are there for those un-leadable teachers, huh? You can't coach a team of players that do not want to play for you. You will lose every time.

The teachers refuse to be lead by them because they are pie positions. They scurry around to meetings that nobody really has to go to and redeliver material (I guess that is what they are supposed to do, anyway) that nobody really needs. There is a good big of money tied up in coaches of all sorts.

So let's talk about the supplements. The only thing I have ever, and will ever, agree with Ronnie Johnson about is the fact that supplements are THROUGH THE ROOF.

The cheerleading "coach" gets paid over $10,000 as a supplement. Imagine what a football coach gets???? I guarantee you could find people to do it for less. Half price even. Are they doing it for the love of the sport or for the money? Really.

Between the academic coaches and sports coaches, we are about to coach ourselves broker than we ever have been.

Everyone always talks about the educators. What about the school bus drivers who haven't had a raise in over 6 yrs! They transport your kids safely to school everyday! Like they say you pay for what you get. Some of these new drivers are scary! They are short in sub drivers because the job just doesn't pay that good anymore since the health insurance had sky rocketed! Most barely bring home 500.00 a month after benefits are taken out. On top if that they drive a bus load (20-65) screaming kids because the schools don't discipline them anymore!

Please get it right, its not that the "schools" dont discipline the children, it that the PARENTS dont discipline them!! Stop putting all the parenting eggs in the school basket and blaming them, discipline belongs 90% on parents shoulders and 10% on schools but if parents don't allow the teachers to discipline then it falls 100% on parents. Sadly most parents want the school to do all the raising of children but dont want to allow them to discipline and in turn they dont want to either, that equals horrible kids. It is a very simple concept.

I understand what your saying, but when the child misbehaves, send them back home! I hate to see kids suspended, but dang something's got to give!
Would you rathe have a bus load of kids killed because of the few that misbehave? The schools won't do anything anymore for fear if being sued! I hate it, but if you can't tech your kids to behave then keep them at home so the rest can learn.

What school has a cheer coach with a $10,000 supplement in Douglas County? The county supplement is about a 10th of that. Are Booster Clubs paying that kind if money? I doubt it. I'm afraid I'm going to call BS on this one.

the pay for a board member is honestly pocket change in the scope of the money problems. I do not mind their fees or football fees in general. We need good athletics, clubs and academics. Now if we are robbing from one to pay another that is not right. Mot people are mad about how money was spent on a new weight room. I do not care about the money, what i do care about is that everyone pushing for it said we have to have it to be a winner. then we spent the money lets see a winning team. Best team i seen since i graduated in the 90's was lead by Odum (or how ever you spell that)we at least made it past first round playoffs.

A coffee county BOE member makes around $600.00 a month with no benifits, with everything they have to put up with it should be $6000.00 a month!!

Teachers haven't gotten raises either-in fact, our pay has declined over the last three years due to furloughs. This year we had three furlough days, but next year we will have five. Let's furlough the BOE, too. The academic coaches in this county are a joke. The CDAs that they are responsible for are ridiculously bad. The good news is that we hardly see them, so they aren't wasting our time. As far as the argument about board salary being "pocket change" PLEASE put it in my pocket!

The Topix robot that places these stories in the local forums only recognizes "Douglas" in the headline.
It can't tell if it is the city of Douglas (in Coffee County) or the County of Douglas, so it places it in both.

I'm sure the Topix computers appreciate your helpfulness in pointing this out, as well as the others above that have done the same.
