I will have all of you idiots know that I had the pleasure of knowing Piedad. We were aerobics instructors together at a small gym in Aurora. This woman came from Guatemala and led a strong life centered around God and her children. Shortly before we started teaching together, she confided in me that she had finally gotten her license and was a very concerned driver. NEVER would she have jeapordized her childrens' safety to beat a train. Anyone with a negative comment ought to be ashamed of themselves. I did see her on a weekly basis, and although I wasn't by any means a close friend, she was an inspiration and she will be missed terribly by all of her students. Please keep her children in your thoughts and prayers, instead of dissecting her tragic death with your psuedo- intellectual analysis. Thanks.

I have worked with railroads all over the world, and NONE that I have seen use a yellow light sequence prior to crossing activation. Japan uses a crossing occupancy detection system on _some_ of their crossings to alert train crews to a stalled vehicle, but they are no guarantee against train-car collisions. They simply turn on a light above the track. It doesn't make the train stop any faster, and all the laws of physics certainly still apply.
Could crossing systems be better? Sure. But people have proven time and again that, in spite of the increased safety systems in vehicles and on our roadways, they will make choices that prove to be deadly.
Every single train crew member I've talked with has hit AT LEAST one vehicle at a road crossing. Every one. This in spite of the fact that in most all cases, motorists chose to drive around the lowered gates. And I've talked with a lot of crews both here and overseas. They are helpless to prevent these incidents when people ignore the warning signs, lights, and gates. And this doesn't begin to address the number of tresspassing issues whereby people walk or play on the private railroad right of way.
Robert, I don't pretend to know the source of your anger over this issue. But I do know that anger and ignorance are a very bad combination. I don't work directly for a railroad, and I'm certainly no industry apologist. I just tire of people spreading ingorance about issues they clearly know nothing about.
Operation Lifesaver ( www.oli.org ) works to educate the public and help prevent these issues. Maybe you should put your passion to work to help educate others.

If it's stalled, hung up, abandoned, stolen, or sitting there for insurance payment vehicles in 10 of those 14 collisions what do gates have to do with anything? If it's vehicle failed brakes, accelerator problems, medical problems, icy approaches, fog hid, vegetation hid, vehicle hid signals in 8 of those 10 collisions what does red lights have to do with it? Your 1% BS doesn't cover 100% like the railroads would like the people to believe now does it you railroad puke brainwashed idiot?

For those of you not familiar with Mr. Pines, he's been on this same kick for years, after his wife was killed at a railroad crossing (which the railroad was found NOT at fault for, and his court case thrown out). I've seen him rant and rave like this for a long, long time and he jumps on every RR crossing incident to try and blame the RR's and OLI for his wife's death. Anything you see from him, should be taken with a grain of salt. He refuses to accept the fact that 99.9% of crossing fatalities are caused by an error in judgment with the driver of the vehicle that was struck.

Of course, how he'll just call me a RR plant, which is his SOP when someone disagrees with his delusional rantings. Just thought y'all should know who he is, and where he comes up with the stuff he posts.

May God Bless her , she was my sister in law and i just had a granddaughter ... we lose a soul as another enters the world . Accidents truly do happen , it is a sad fact of life .. all i ask is that people pray for the children and take the time to be careful on the roads . Especially during holidays .
