What a misleading opening sentence! Typical SS for you...
She was parked in a fire lane and that is why she got towed. There is not a single sentence saying the car was a repo.
In FL, tow companies are known for patrolling the apt complexes they have contracts with and towing illegally parked cars in less than two minutes, then you get to pay them to get it back, plus storage charges. And heaven help you if it is the weekend when they tow it.
Glad the kid is OK but next time she should watch where she parks!
Two minutes?? That tow driver is SLOW. I've seen them jacked up and gone in 15-30 SECONDS. That's why he had to stop "to ensure that the car was hooked up properly," all he did was slide the bar under the front tires and up she goes. Is very unsafe to run like this but it allows these ambush drivers to move quickly, then they stop a few miles away, add the straps and chains (which is when he discovered he had a child in the car) and off they go.

I have also heard of them towing people if they have backed into a parking space instead of facing inward. It all depends on the homeowner associations' laws and what they will allow the tow company to get away with. They might as well just give them a blank check.

And to the person who said they can't go on private property to take a repo. Yes they can. Technically, it is not yours if it is financed, it belongs to the finance company and is their property until you pay it off.

The mother probably thought she was okay parking illegally since technically, there was an "occupant" in the vehicle. She must not have realized that none of that matters when you park in a fire lane. What an idiot.

I found this story interesting and have to agree with Sergio Zuniga. On one or two occasions I have had to deal with tow truck drivers who have actual threatened me. I know that some tow truck drivers supplement their income by blocking cars in and pocketing cash. The question is how many people need to potential be hurt by irresponsible people trying to make a easy dollar before they reevaluate their business model?

The reason people were talking about a repo is that the comments for this story were somehow joined with the comments of a previous story from September of last year. Just look at the dates of the comments.

I am African-
american, and I am trying to understand what "your friend's" race has to do with that situation?! As a constllation to make myself feel better...I WILL say that my caucasian neighbors just got their BMW repossessed, and I'm sure they work just as hard as you and I. These are struggling times for everyone. The economy is BAD. Hopefully the child in this particular situation is okay AND hopefully their family will be blessed with a monetary reimbersement that is sufficient for them to be able to pay ALL their bills for a VERY long time.
