Laycock to be sworn in tonight
Newest AIS board member brings art and education experience By WENDY MITCHELL, Staff Writer Published: Thursday, November 5, 2009 1:36 AM EST AUGUSTA -- Tonight will be the first meeting of Augusta Independent School board which will include its newly appointed member. Dionne Laycock was appointed in October, just under the 90-day deadline, to fill the seat opened by the resignation of board member Gene Groves in early July, officials said. "KDE (Kentucky Department of Education) conducted the interviews, we found out when they announced their choice," said AIS Superintendent John Cordle. Groves attempted to rescind his resignation but too late to retain his seat, state officials said July 24. Applicants for the position were considered by a review committee. Nominees had to reside in the school district and have at least a GED, said KDE spokesperson Lisa Gross. KDE Commissioner Terry Holliday had the final say on the appointment, Gross said. Laycock has been a member of the Augusta Art Guild, is married to Augusta Mayor John Laycock and has two children, Claire and Jack. She graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a BFA and has been employed at NKU in the graphics department for seven years. She produces two magazines at the college, The Northerner and the Chase Law Magazine.She has also worked many years as a freelance artist and designer of company logos. Excited about getting sworn in at tonight's meeting, Laycock said she is pleased at progress the school district has made over the years. "My daughter is going to be going there and I thought this is the right time to become more involved," she said on Wednesday. Making sure AIS students are on a positive path to college, Laycock said the school needs to keep focused on what colleges are looking for from incoming students. "They are looking at students who have the scores in math and science. AIS has been making good progress and I want to see that continue," she said. The caring and closeness of students and staff at AIS inspire her. "They work together to make sure they all do well," Laycock said. "The school community is all about each others' success." Laycock will serve out the remainder of Groves' term which means the seat will be opened for election in 2010, Cordle said. So please tell me why a person whose husband is Mayor and her sister in law is on the board to wants to on the School Board?? Something is wrong with this picture. Who is filling the next seat? Mike Bach ex Mayor?????????? |

I think augusta school board and the city council should do a big family tree because they are all related. Hope they do something about that at the next election.

What 1-horse divorce everybody? If you did a family tree 9/10s are related! Unless you move in this town then you are not related but I doubt that will happen.
It isn't going to happen in any election, you are as naive as they come. |

Name one....because if you are going to say someone that resigned then you haven't realized they quit because they didn't get their way.
She has kids coming to the school in the next year or two!! She has a right to be on the board. |

|
name them i dare you to name even one that is "more" qualified! noone is "more" qualified than she.
|
||||
Why did`nt they apply? The only 2 that did had previous seats and resigned (quit) Any election is open for anyone to run so put your name on the ballot and work to get elected,yes work you dont just get elected you have to work at it. If you have ever been on council or any boards you will see that it is not a gravy train,I applaud anyone that wants to serve and be the focus of the crap on this site. |

People of Augusta, dont you all know that Laycocks,and the Bachs are the only ones educated enough, to run this town,let someone apply for the same job they do and have equal qualifacations, and the Laycocks and the Bachs, would still get the job.That is the ways its done in a small town,i guess it is true you just cant fight the system.They are such great role models LOL

From what I can tell Dione Laycock is the only 1 with any real education the Bachs sure dont have any.
