Why were students not informed of this?

Everytime I turn on my computer and come to topix, seems like there is something negative about Lincoln Memorial University. I read on the local news website Wate that an LMU student is claiming to have been raped. The article is below..

Lincoln Memorial University student makes rape claim

HARROGATE (WATE)-- A Lincoln Memorial University student claims she was raped in a campus dorm last Monday.

Claiborne County Sheriff David Ray says investigators first learned of the allegations Monday afternoon after a Knoxville hospital contacted them.

The alleged incident happened after midnight Monday morning.

Detectives are looking at several suspects.

"Immediately upon receiving the information and confirming the information we immediately went to talk to officials and security there," Ray says.

Ray adds investigators have been working closely with university officials and security.

"There have been several people interviewed, and we've collected evidence that we believe will be relative to the allegations," he says.

Kate Reagan, the university spokesman, confirmed the allegations. "The office of enrollment management and student services is following all procedures and continue to follow up with the sheriff's department.

Ray says the investigation might take them outside Claiborne County and possible even out of state.

He adds that he's contacted the district attorney's office about the alleged incident, but no one there could comment. nts not informed of this?

Anything to avoid negative publicity. LMU care about the students' safety and welfare? Not much apparently. Anybody heard about the strange guy living in the basement of LP? No? Hmmm.....guess he didn't pose any threat. You can bet your bottom dollar that LMU did its best at trying to keep this rape allegation out of the news

As the aunt of three college students at schools in three different states, I know that if something like this happened not only would each student at their schools receive an e-mail or letter from the President, but so would their parents. It is a disgrace that students had to find out about the alleged incident from television and newspaper reports. Even if it turns out that a rape did not occur, lets face it is a possibility and the students need to be informed for their own safety. If the President Moody nor her staff informed the students then it is not only a dsgrace but in my opinion a crime against the very people she is responsible for protecting as well as educating.

It is appalling how LMU seems to conduct situations like this one. I know for a fact that the students had to learn about this (RAPE) from other students and they had heard about it from someone who heard it on the news. This is horrible. You state that Nancy Moody, President should have sent out an email to the students. Well, if you read on topix you will soon see that Mrs. Moody is president in name only, so it seems. I agree 100 % with you that someone should have informed the students. If this had happened at UT or another campus. The students would have been made well aware of it in a fast and timely matter. LMU, students and employees were told not to discuss anything that happened at LMU with anyone. This is a ridiculous statement. I believe that we have freedom of speech. That is one thing that our country has been fighting for as long as I can remember. If you are an employee or a student at LMU, does that mean that you have to give up this right? Does LMU not allow you freedom of speech?
