Doctor heads to court after online sex sting

A prominent Piedmont doctor is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 2 to answer to felony charges stemming from his arrest in late August in Petaluma in a sting operation involving online sex crimes with children.

Remarkable that any man would think a 13 yo girl would want to intimate with them.... a genuine disconnect that shows they are not ready for any responsibility in society. The sad thing is this physician will still find work and victims... all the others went to jail while he had his wife bring a 30,000 check so he could be immediately released. The other should have been released on 300 dollar bail .. which would be the equivalent to them what the 30k was to the doctor. Attorney Blair Berk is incredibly ignorant and stupid for someone who is suppossedly 'highly-educated.' How can he sya that Wolin is "not a threat to anyone." the only question I have for this moron is, "Would you like Wolin to speak to your 13-yr-old daughter the way he did the decoy?"

No wonder why people have a strong dislike for attorneys. Anything for the almighty dollar. Wolin DESERVES the PAIN & ANGUISH he is going to face! One less JAG-OFF lurking on the internet, hiding behind their lofty staus as a 'prominent' member of society.

I think you're very ignorant to the fact that every one desearves the right to counsel and due process of law. We live under the rule of law which means due process. Attorneys are much needed and do this great land a great service. Think about it..if you can think.

He saw her, followed her in the backyard and spilled his drink. He met her online and decided willingly (without a gun to his head, or a noose around his neck)to risk his marriage, his career, and breaking the law. Are you trying to say that what happened on that tape didn't happen in real life? How much more proof do you need than a video showing the whole crime? It is obvious to everyone else, and don't be fooled, his attorney KNOWS damn well what he was there for. Unfortunately, this country's judicial system is seriously flawed and there are attorneys that do more harm than good AND a bunch of morons that just don't seem to get it.

In general I agree with you minus the vitriol. But I take exception to the above statement. The system is not flawed, our use of it sometimes is.

Regardless of what this guy did, he deserves legal counsel. Such counsel should do the right thing, absolutely, but his first duty is to his client.

There are certainly sleazy lawyers, but defending a scumbag doesn't make a lawyer a scumbag. Refusing to defend such loser might.

I think the system IS flawed in many ways. Dangerous murderers and child molesters not convicted because of a "technicality" are allowed to go back into society to repeat their crimes. Judges not allowing evidence in the courtroom, such as video tapes, past crimes, confessions etc., even if the crimes are similar to the ones they're on trial for.

I'm not saying people don't deserve legal counsel, even Maurice Wolin deserves it, but if there is evidence, cut and dry, in your face, and you are watching a crime being commited, then it is a bold-faced lie for an attorney to say it didn't happen. Now, if his attorney recognized that he did show up, admitted that her client chatted with someone he thought was underage, and showed up to the house with the intent of having sex with a minor, well, that's a different story. No one is fooled by the attorney's denial. And Maurice Wolin will not be let off the hook--he'll be convicted. The benefit of his attorney, in my opinion, is to get his burglary charged dropped and get less jail time.

Unfortunately, the legal system is more like a game than out to serve justice--just ask the thousands of victims that are failed by the system.

What Maurice Wolin did was clearly wrong, however, the religious zeal, vitriol, and hate that I see on this board is also wrong.

Where do you people draw the line? Are you saying that it would be ok for him to have sex with an 18 year old girl, but when he attempts to have sex with a 13-15 year old girl (who, by the way looked close to 21) he suddenly deserves the death penalty?

I'm sorry people, it is not that cut-and-dry. Life is more complicated than that. We are all sinners, and none of us has the right to judge anyone else for their sins.

The fact is that our society is overly harsh on any crimes involving sex. For example, our justice system spends millions of dollars and resources prosecuting prostitution, even in cases where it is practiced in a victemless setting behind closed doors, away from public society and our children. Does this not strike anyone else as silly?

Meanwhile, white collar crimes that wipe out the savings of thousands of families (and do far more damage to society than people like Maurice Wolin) go relatively unpunished and do not provoke nearly the same level of outrage as Wolin.

Yes, we need to protect our society from men (and women) who prey on minors, however, we also need to develop a healthier attitude towards sex, and stop treating it like something dirty and evil. Stop getting outraged when a woman's bare breast is shown on TV and start looking at all the violence and white collar crime in America!

We can make all the laws and punishments we want for these types of crimes, but ultimately there is only so much you can do to legislate morality. I would go so far as to say, the more we try to control peoples' morality, the more likely we are to see an increase in the exact type of behavious we are attempting to legislate (think prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s.)

I know personally someone who - at a young age - met up with their own MW. This person has suffered the personal emotional and mental repercussions for her entire adult life. Life is complicated, but never so much so that it can allow rationalization of sexual exploitation of a younger person by an older, more experienced person with greater resources.

And adults do have greater resources. They can walk away. The child (whether she's four or fourteen) almost never can. Don't assume that everyone on this board follows a traditional Judeo-Christian morality, Maurice-hater. There are some matters that transcend such and come under the auspice of simple human decency.

If you could see the hell my friend has gone through as a young woman and adult, all because an older man seduced her and made her feel she was "grown up" at a time when she was just becoming curious about sex and puberty, you might change your tune. To paraphrase an old saying, "A preacher of forebearance or grey areas regarding child exploitation is a person who has never fallen prey to a pedophile."

No new victims. One of the first considerations we should make when it comes to deciding how "legislate this morality". And with the recidivism rate being what it is with these people...I think it means removing them from society.

The burglary charge was from entering a private residence without the knowledge of the owners (the minor's parents) with the intent of committing a crime.

I don't know Dr. Wolin -- but I do know that a doctor should know better. Someone with his education not to mention having taken the oath to preserve human life definitely has no excuse for doing what he did (or attempted to do).

What disturbs me most about Wolin is his apparent lack of remorse (other than the remorse of having been caught). He plead not guilty, and I'd like to know how he reconciles this plea against the fact that he willfully entered the home of a minor whose parents were not at home (or at least this was his intent) to have sex. If he didn't intend of having some sort of sexual relations with this girl, why did he show up? Because he was concerned? He sure didn't look concerned on the vid. In fact, he seemed to be all smiles. He was so excited that he spilled a big chunk of frozen juice on the table. That speaks volumes.

Why did he bolt when he saw the PJ team? If he was just being a concerned citizen, he should have stayed and stated his case. Instead he ran like a scared rabbit.

And note how he slammed his sunglasses on the pavement when he saw law enforcement. Bit of a temper issue if you ask me.

I don't know what kind of a doctor this guy is. He clearly has mental issues. No one of sound mind would do what he did.

Like you, I believe that he deserves counsel. But for his lawyer to state that he is not a threat is ludicrous. I wouldn't have my dauaghter witin a mile of him.

Incidentally, Dr. Wolin had his medical license suspended as of November 30th pending an investigation by the State Medical Board of California.

Regardless what happens, Dr. Wolin is damaged goods. His reputation is in the toilet. I don't know how much his marriage has suffered, but I don't doubt it has. And his daughters? I don't know if their relationship would ever be the same again.

A single stupid act can change a life forever. I think that Dr. Wolin has alredy found this out the hard way.

I tend to doubt that Dr. Wolin has mounted his daughters but, one never knows what evil lurks in the rareified atmosphere in the Hills of Piedmont. As for his wife, well I'm sure she's trying to protect her girls,(offspring not her boobs). I hope she gets everything and the doc gets a baseball bat up his arse and to his head. Maybe they all sleep in the same bed, like the Aristocrats. Four-way, Five-way, how many girls?
