The Mayor and City Council are considering either getting a new Police Chief or doing away with the Auburn PD altogether. I moved to Auburn from Syracuse. Syracuse got rid of their police department, and we were not pleased with the (lack of) service that we received after the sheriff’s office took over. The level of service here will drop, and the time it takes for cops to get to a problem will increase. I only called the Otoe Sheriff’s Department once for an issue, and they said all the deputies were on the other side of the county. It was over an hour before I was talking to a deputy. Needless to say I was not pleased.
I’m not sure what the Auburn city officials think they’re gaining by disposing of the local police, but I assure you there is nothing to be gained for us here in Auburn. There will be no do-overs on this matter. Once the local PD is gone, it won’t come back, and we’ll be stuck with no dedicated law enforcement. Just like we did in Syracuse, no one here is paying attention, and by the time everyone notices it will be too late. Learn from us!
