Worcester, MA

Full story: ChowHound

This Midwesterner will be in Worcester next week for a workshop. I'd be happy for suggestions on good dinner eats - nothing fancy - burgers, pizzas, seafood.

Check out the eateries on Shrewsbury Street, its known as Resturaunt Row. Many Italian places, but a wide variety of choices.A few of the better small places are LaScala (Italian). The Wonder Bar, great pizza, upscale steak house is the 111 Chop House. Seafood, try The Sole Proprietor on Highland Street. Good pub style, Irish Times on Main Street, Piccadlilly Pub, on Shrewsbury Street and Rte.12 Auburn.

I would not recommend Coral Seafood nor Sole Proprietor!!! I had two very bad experiances. The food just didn't taste fresh at Coral Seafood, and bad service and under cooked food at the Sole.

Dino's is the best place in Worcester for Italian food (Plantation St.).

Block 5 if you love well-prepared delicious dishes. It is not that expensive either. The owner is a wonderfully friendly guy who also owns Bocado and they're opening Mezcal soon on Shrewsbury Street.
Block 5's swordfish is the best.
For Chinese food go to Nancy Chang.
Struck Cafe for great soups.

I would never recommend the following:

1.Peppercorns -(rude attitudes and food is horrid)
They own Elsa's Bushel and Peck too and they serve old food and they handle food with bare hands! You wanna pay for this??
2.Sole P- Too noisy and service is not that great.
3.Tribeca- Bad food served 2ce there. Bland soups!

When did they change chefs Danny? I really liked it but they need richer soups and better stuff. Their attitude was pretty nice and not too crowded.(last summer).

I was born and raised in Worcester, and I actually happen to live on SHrewsbury St. I just have to say that I COMPLETELY disagree that Dino's is the best retaurant in the city!! I am shocked that someone who lives here would say that. It was a nice restaurant many years ago, however has gone down hill. Although I have yet to eat at Coral Seafood, I have eaten at the Sole Proprietor several times and I love it! It is always busy and they have excellent food. I also have to say that there is a little restaurant hidden in the city called Cafe Espresso, that happens to be one of the BEST places to get Italian. It is on Wall St. off of Hamilton, and you will NOT regret eating there!

ellie-

I have not yet but if it is anything like their other places (Block 5 and Bocado), it will be fabulous ! Much better than restaurants always touted like The Sole, which I actually find their food is horrible and their ambience is non-existant (The Sole P. is way too loud ,overcrowded!)

Ditto to 'Dino's as not the best Italian Restaurant in Worcester.'
Mostly red-sauced, large portions but no distinctive character.
Have eaten at Caffe Expresso, very reasonable and decent, not fancy or superficial in any way.
Those who havegone to Italy would be horrified what passes for Italian food in New England.

Get a ride to and from with work with meals being served. It could happen folks. Please recommend some deli's that would fit the bill. Belsito's Deli is a great choice.

Danielle Evangilista...I'm surprised you would say such a thing about Dino's; since it is owned by the Evangilista family...Perhaps you are related and bitter?

I agree about the Sole - I hate it there...Way too loud and overpriced! I have heard Coral Seafood sucks.

My favorite? Choida's is small and quiet - great food but a little pricey.

El Basha is GREAT (Belmont Street) The best Greek Salad ever and if your a vegeterian, you'll LOVE the pumpkin Kibbee!!

Foodie - Where is Choida's?? I love pricey new places.

Coral Seafood is terrible btw-bad service, worst food.

And El Basha on Park Avenue is nice but they never change their menu !

Harlequin, btw, is now lowbrow- very unprofessional service. Avoid !

I was looking online to find a recipe used in a restaurant in Worcester in the 1960s. The name is the White House Restaurant and was located on Park Avenue. It was across the street from a men's clothing store (Eddie's, I think). They served the most delicious crabmeat stuffing with shrimp, lobster and scallops you ever tried! I worked there in the late 60's and used to have the recipe. I have lost the recipe and would love to have it again. You are probably too young to even remember the restaurant, but maybe someone will have some information about it. The restaurant was owned by the Stavros family and folks would stand in line for an hour to get in! Now, that's good food.

i think el basha is the best middle eastern resturant. the food is delicious and nothing is ever wrong. the manager is nice and polite. the waitresses are very cooperative and know what they are doing. el bashas are located on worcester, park ave, and westboro. its better than marocccos and is a great deal. i love the food soo much.
