Incidents like this is why prisoners should be locked down for 23 hours a day and only leave their cell mwhile in handcuffs. There is way too much freedom in our prisons for this to be considered punishment.
I am not disagreeing with you, but maybe you don't realize that these pieces of S*** have more rights that we do! Ask an ACLU member...

My heart goes out to the family of Officer Rivera's family. I was in USP Atlanta when Officer Washington made the supreme sacrifice. It is sad when the samething happens and it will be a isolated incident. Do away with the mission critical roster and properly staff your institutions.

My heart goes out to the family of this officer. My heart goes out for the staff @ USP Atwater.NO ONE understands an officers life behind prison walls. Let's makes sure it doesn't take 7 years or more before they prosecute those assholes. They should get the electric chair for this.

Our thoughts and prayer for Officer Rivera's family outside and inside the walls. We hoped that this would never happen to us again after Scott Williams was taken from us, but in the world that we work in, you have come to expect the unexpected. Love and support is all that is needed at this time, USP Atwater is a good strong facility, and will make it through this time of sorrow. USP Tucson is here for all of you! God Bless!

All sympathies to Jose Rivera's Family. You are in our prayers.

Sad that the BOP leadersship still does not trust officers with protective equipment carried on duty.$15 dollars worth of pepper spray may have given him a chance. We should have had it long ago, instead of getting instructions to model "pro-social bahavior" to manage increasingly defiant and assaultive inmates.

Does it take a death to open their eyes?

My thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Rivera's family and to the staff at USP Atwater. May God give you strength, peace, and a togetherness to get you through this tough time. My sincere apology to the family of this young hero, for the low lifes that we as officers have to walk amongst on a day to day basis, May God Strengthen you.

First and foremost, To the family of Jose Rivera, my sincerest condolences. This is a horrible action taken against one of my fellow CO's by two cowards. We know the risks involved with our job. Why do we still do it some may say. The answer is simple anyone can sell cars or sell stocks, but not everyone can walk into a closed building and deal with several hundred of societies worst without a weapon. We fight through disturbances and fights just to come back the next day for more, and we always say the same thing...."as long as the good guys get to go home, that is what matters". I did not know this man personally, but I will not forget the sacrifice that he made. God please watch over his family and keep us safe.

I just want to say that i totally agree with Mr. Bobby Somers. There is too much freedom in our federal prisons. The inmates roam freely all day long and that is ridiculous and half of them talk to you like they run the prison and that's ridiculous as well. It's because the bureau has them spoil because they let them get away with entirely too much. If they were kept locked down it could definitely prevent these unfortunate fatalities. My condolences go out to Jose and his family. It needs to be more strictness in our prisons and less babysitting.

Our condolences from USP Leavenworth to Officer Rivera's family and to all of our brothers and sisters at USP Atwater. Being a rookie just off probation and a nurse this saddens me and angers me. When I went into work yesturday to find out the news you could feel the saddness in the halls of our institution. No one will ever forget this tragedy and we are all praying that congress will look at the big picture and increase our funding for more staff. These inmates expect everything and respect nothing. How can they, they didn't respect themselves or their families enought not to go to prison in the firtst place. USP Atwater stay safe and strong as to all in the BOP family. I am proud to do my job and serve with people I can trust to have my back. Go Bless.
