Restaurant Review Boss Hogs BBQ in Columbus Georgia
Originally, I am from Florida and love to eat good barbecue. When I moved to Georgia, I notice that Georgia has a certain way that they cook their ribs. via Associated Content

I'm a rib lover and the "Boss" has excellent ribs. Fall off the bone tender and juicy. I've had the ribs twice and I'll be going back soon.

Ok, so i tried Boss's. I was not impressed. I went there and there was not one person in there. My son asked me if they were even open. I walked in and one lady was there. The place was clean. We looked at the menu and ordered. We ordered the daisy's, some brunswick stew and the "good collards" as the L.E. had boasted about in entertainment feature.
The food was not good. I pride myself on eating in new restaurants twice a month. we go out as a group and i was going to try this place. It was not worth the come back. prices were good. the daisy was .99 collards and stew $6.99 a pint. not good...wont go back. another place not good is crickets. that was the worse food i have had in the city. service was terrible. best place to eat "Cafe Amichi" and Bens chop house . |

I've eaten at Boss Hogs many times and love the food. Prices are great and very clean inside. I use to be a Mike & Eds fan, but defintely won't be going back there. Best ribs in town and I am a rib eater. I don't know what Aaron is talking about, because those are the best collards I've ever eaten. The stew is the same as Smokey Pigs if you like theirs.

Mike and Eds ribs are excellent especially when you slather them in their Hog Heaven Yella Soppin sauce. There is no other barbque experience like it in town.

"bar b q man"
I'd like to also mention the Macon Road BBQ. In my experience I like them both, but Macon Road seems more consistent. I also like the Brunswick stew at Macon Road. ---------- Also, for me, the best BBQ does not just fall off the bone. I'm a purist and finishing ribs by steaming in tin foil is not my favorite way to have them cooked. Not too many places understand that the best way to cook ribs is low and slow. They take short cuts that ruin if for me. Water and ribs don't mix. Just say no. JMHO |

Prefer Mike & Ed's myself. The recipe, the flavor and the sauce are constant. Still the best local barbecue in town.
Of course, barbecue is a little like local football preferences. Auburn? Georgia? Alabama? It's all a matter of tastes. |

Thats a big statement! I think you opened a big can of worms, especially because the Bar b q man has weighed in on this thread.:-) I have not eaten at as many places as the Bar b q man, but I have eaten alot of bbq around the globe. One of my all time favorites are Penny's Rib Shack in Waldorf MD. This is a place and memory that will be vivid in my mind forever. Sadly it has been closed for about 20 years or more now. I was a teenager and we would drive an hour to a place in the middle of nowhere for these ribs. It was a wood shack with a cinder block pit filled with hard woods and ribs. You would see your ribs cut and then put in tin foil and you got sauce and white bread in your bag to go. I have never tasted anything like this again. I have only found a few passing notes on this place over the years on the web and everyone remembers it fondly. My other favorites are Bodacious in Tyler TX, and a rib shack in Grand Case, St. Martin. Anyway, as far as Columbus, I'm not sure I even know all the rib places available. |

Elsewhere, my all time fav has to be from a place called Johnny Harris' in Savannah. The business has been in the same location and building since, if memory serves, the 1930s. They have a delicious BBQ'd lamb sandwich that was what got me hooked back in the 1960s...
PS - You can buy their name brand BBQ sauce from Publix locally. |

I don't know if you know it or not, but Macon Rd Bar BQ and Brennan Rd are owned by the same people |

I am from Florida and have only lived in Columbus for almost 2 years now. I have to admit i was stunned, and YES DISAPPOINTED, in the BBQ up here. This mustard base stuff is just NOT BBQ! THE BEST BBQ I HAVE EVER EATEN IS SMOKEY'S REAL PIT BBQ IN PENSACOLA FLORIDA!!!! I will be honest thought and say this...Boss Hog's little Daisy sandwich is good because it is not TOO mustardy. And as for the collards....OMG THEY ARE AWESOME and "I" am a collard lovin' southern girl!!!!!
