How ironic that during the years of growth and prosperity in Myrtle Beach the MB city council and mayor sat idly by while Atlantic Beach continued to spiral downward. For the past year there has been one news story after another of how Atlantic Beach was bankrupt, could not pay its police, etc. Now suddenly MB officials want to organize an effort to help Atlantic Beach as part of a "comprehensive" plan to help pay off AB's debt and then claim that this new initiative has nothing to do with buying off the town to curtail the Memorial Day bike week? Just how much BS do they think the citizens on the Grand Strand are going to swallow? If not, why not just offer to help without preconditions? Now that Mayor Rhodes is on a personal crusade to end the bike week, all sorts of efforts are being made to halt the AB sponsorship of the event. Although Atlantic Beach has its financial problems, it has managed so far to preserve it's heritage and the fact that it is the only beach side community of it's kind on the East Coast that is controlled by the African American community. It would be a shame if the current mayor and town council of Atlantic Beach kowtow and allow the surrounding predominantly white communities to dictate what will happen once the conditional bailout money is accepted. The leaders of Atlantic Beach should seek assistance with the help of the many prosperous state and national business and governmental leaders in the African American community and preserve AB's independence. If the AB city officials give in, it is a journey down the road toward a complete takeover of Atlantic Beach. Once gone, Atlantic Beach and its rich cultural history will be just a memory.

Atlantic Beach has had EVERY chance by the community and the courts to get a grip on their own situation. They have already been granted more leeway than any of their white counterparts in the same regards to their own town corruption. Before you start trying to play that worn out race card, by suggesting "that blacks can not handle their own affairs" is sad indeed. The so-called "leaders" of Atlantic Beach have taken a historical parcel of our community and led it to ruin, making a mockery of their heritage. Their ancestors are rolling over in their graves because of the lack of leadership. The black community it seems (and very conveniently I might add) are the only people holding that loaded deck of race cards....and the only people that gets away with playing them. Retha Pierce has the audacity to call BBW "tradition" and culture" to justify their actions?
Area citizens of the surrounding communities have offered to help lift the spirits of the residents of Atlantic Beach. I was one of those residents who offered my time and paint.
Previous residents and descendants of Atlantic Beach must be so ashamed the path of leadership (or lack thereof) that has been shown to have existed there.
Welcome to "Black Pearl"...what a joke.
Its' leaders have reduced their town to relying on the profits from an event they affectionately call "Bikefest". In actuality it is more a freak or thug fest. See the video footage here of what its' leaders are promoting with the help of Violet Lucas from Georgetown, SC and Hakim Harrell in Philly, PA:
The town officials call this "culture" and "tradition" of their heritage, while the surrounding communities call it "vulgar" and "lewd". It is a behavior that has taken over Atlantic Beach, SC and they do not have the guts to stop it because it brings in fees from the vendors who set up tents there. This town is drowning.
Area communities have offered to help revitalize their cultural community so they do not HAVE to rely on "Bikefest" for a few bucks.

No one is on a "personal" crusade to end the bike weeks. The citizens want the noise and crude behavior on our "public" streets to stop. We want the persons that attend these rallies to respect our area and its' citizens and our children.
My user ID says I'm in Florence, SC while in fact, I am in Surfside Beach, SC.

Its' own leaders are corrupt and they have ignored their own history and culture. The have done their ancestors a GREAT injustice.

Atlantic Beach is being BUILT upon, and there is NO need for the noise by the bikers.
Our heritage is in tact w/o the bikers.
Parking is an issue now for tourism, other than that all is going WELL.
NATIVE BLOOD resides.
