As with many other topics Negative comments are always expressed more. Why because misery loves company and ppl always want to vent and rant when something is to thier dislike. I was born in manchester, jamaica. Moved to soweto, africa with my dad from the age of 9-14 raised in Miami,fl since .It is hillarious the negative comments are about crime, pedophiles, schools etc. Have you ever lived in Africa? Americans in General are some of the most spoiled ignorant individuals in the world. I am moving to Jacksonvile in may and I will make my OWN fucking decision thank you

I was born and raised in Jax till I was 23 and moved to Tucson Az, then near Chicago IL, and now San Diego Ca, for the last 4 years. I am trying my hardest to get back home to Jax. I can truly compare the two! Both places have beauty of different kinds. Beaches- I prefer Jax because of the sand and water temp. However, the sunset cliffs are pretty in San Diego. Traffic- come on NO comparison!!! San Diego traffic is horrifying. For the most part people are rude and have to get some where faster than you. Cost of Living- hands down Jax!! Yes its always for the most part sunny and beautiful here in S.D. but you are paying a premium for that weather and beauty. Friendlyness Jax all the way...not being pro Jax, but a lot of people in S.D. act like they are better than you and are shallow on the surface. Not all people! I have made so me pretty good friends here, but that is the overall attitude. If you have a family then at least in Jax a good neighborhood is affordable and you can get a fairly newer home. Something that was built at least after the 70/80's. Crime- well I would say its pretty comparable...all I have to say is El Cajon, Chula Vista and TJ Mexico!!! Sorry not trying to offend anyones hometown. Just saying we have higher crime sides of town just like any other city. Do your homework and determine whats best for you!

Jacksonville has about 820,000 people so that puts it in the same ballpark as Indianapolis or an Austin. I've never had any trouble finding what I needed. I'm sure there are things one can't find, but that's either because no one wants it or the manufacturer doesn't distribute it. It's easy to find Tastykakes in Philly but hard to find them outside of there. I used to shop at Nordstom's all the time so no, I can't find their clothes out here. But I can still find shirts, suites, etc. so it's not a big deal. Honestly, I think if you can't find something you either aren't looking very hard or it is here, but just under a different name, like Hellman's and Best Foods. Same mayonaise, just different names in different parts of the country.
While the Christian mentality can be a little extreme with some people, it's not nearly as destructive as the liberal mentality that is coming in, especially from the North East. After screwing up New York, New Jersey, most of California, Detroit and other blue areas, they decide to come to FL and mess things up here. If you think Christians are bad, you should talk to an atheist. There's someone who has no clue and won't be happy until everything is a wreck.
What railroad system? I've probably seen less than six trains since I've moved here and none of them had any impact on my drive.
Crimes is crime. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_ci...
It's a lot worse in Philly but that's a larger city. It's also worse in Memphis, which is a smaller city. Lot's of things go into crime. If you think it's bad here you haven't been to many cities in the NE.
First of all, I agree with you. I don't know what the hell that clown is talking about - not being able to find a "certain kind of paint"? That is a pathetic excuse for an argument. You must not be looking very hard if you can't find what you want. Just like anywhere, some stores don't carry items -- so order them and they will ship to your front door! Secondly.. trains? I have never seen one single train since I moved to Jacksonville over a year ago. If you see a train, you must be living far outside of where the general population resides.
There are a lot of food stamp minorities swarming in the good places to live, but eventually that happens everywhere, unfortunately. I would rather have good-hearted, hard working Christians living around me and throughout my city vs those NE/ Midwest liberals. As my friend here says, they ruin every city. So with that said, if you are liberal, DON'T COME HERE! We don't like you.
The last thing I will say is that Jax is a big little town. You need a vehicle no matter what. Good thing is, you live close to the beach and there are a lot of good restaurants (no I'm not talking about Applebees and Olive Garden). The beaches are very clean and are filled with pretty good bars and pubs. St. Johns town center has good restaurants and bars/lounges. They are more classy than the beach bars.
Bottom line: would I live here the rest of my life?- No. Am I enjoying it much more than living in Michigan, absolutely. Is it better than NYC (minus the liberals)-- No. Would I quit my job so I don't have to move here?-- definitely not. You will find something to do. Pick up a book and go read on the beach. Run and ride your bike on the beach. Pick up new habits. Make the best of what you have.

Ive lived in jax my entire life (duval) and its pretty bad. If you are not street wise aka keep your gaurd up at all times. Its NOT safe here anymore. When my parents bought our home in the early 90s it was great and slowly I have watched all my goox neighbors die off or move away. Only for their houses to be snatched up by land lords who rent the homes to drug dealers and crack heads. If you have money living somewhere ln st johns county wpuld be preferable . But i would never suggest anyone move here. Even near the beaches.where it looks "nice" its hood.

PumpkinGirl, you need to crawl back into the pumpkin patch. Stop listening to the local news and do some research about Jacksonville. For example and shooting and murder at Myrtle and 8th Street should not be reported as a homicide on the Westside. Or a drive by in Talleyrand is not the Eastside. Most of the violent crime in Jacksonville is isolated into small areas of town usually in or near HUD housing. Use the following maps to figure out where the majority of a community tolerates or even approves of violent criminal behavior and where that behavior is not tolerated.

I've lived in Jacksonville since 1980. There's no way you can categorize the quality of life for the whole area. At one time it was the largest land mass of any city in the U.S. So, Jacksonville is very much a city of neighborhoods.
Events in our town cover most of the spectrum - from a city symphony to monster truck rallies. We have an NFL franchise, a Broadway series and an Artist's series. And I understand there's a lively club scene going on.
Public transportation sucks, and you will really need a car to survive here. There are a few fine dining spots and an abundance of fast food outlets. We're on I think the eleventh attempt to make downtown "vital and thriving", but it still isn't and I for one am not too hopeful.
City services work, so traffic moves pretty well, garbage is collected, water comes out of the tap, and the sewers are maintained.
There are pockets of calm sanity across the city. I live in an older neighborhood in North Arlington and enjoy life here. The sheriff's office puts crime statistics online, and you can check out any address for crime activity before you commit to a lease or purchase: http://www.coj.net/departments/sheriffs-offic... .
I really believe anyone can have a good life here, if they take charge of where they live and where they work.

I DO NOT live in the hood. I've lived here over 30 years and this place is awful . Crime is high and corruption is through the roof! They will turn a speeding ticket into attempted murder and could care less if it was your first. They will try and give you at least 10 years for it. They cash in on people here with their prisons. They get paid very well by the government over 45.000 a year per prisoner. Jobs well god luck trying to find one. I'm stuck here for now because of investments. But the first chance I get I will leave this nightmare city behind and forget I ever lived here. I'm white and I'm telling you they are as RACIST as they come here. Save yourself and family don't move to this hell hole.

Why live downtown, commute to work then leave. If it is safe for that duration then you'll be fine.

Look I have lived here all my life(38 years) and yes we have crime,murders,theft,etc...but really who doesn't?I went to San Diego back in 97 for vacation and theres not a huge difference other than the traffic.
Nice areas to live....San Marco,Riverside,Southside,Murr y Hill,And thats just a few.yes we have ghetto's again what city doesn't?
All kinds of things for all ages to do,and alot of free things for the kids.
Hope you the best but as for me I am here to stay!
