the resposible parties should be found, convicted of a hate crime, lose their benefits and put in jail. no excuse for this whatsoever, if it was hazing or a joke still wrong, there is no need to treat people this way.

I am not surprised about this. Jacksonville Florida, compared to the rest of the real world is a racist town.
Jacksonville is a breeding ground for racisim, and has been since before and after abe lincoln. Jacksonville is infested in every nook and crany of the FIRST COAST. They only recently in the 20th century began to hire african american firefighters, I guess the firefighters are still trying to keep it the GOOD OLE BOYS CLUB. How many of the Firefighters can not read or write, barely speak proper english, only have the job due to and have the nerve not to work among african americans...

Firefighters are supposed to be brave, you can walk in to a burning building, but can't work with other ethinic groups. you firefighters in Jacksonville are cowards, show your face, take off your WHITE HOOD,expose yourself for who you really are you COWARDS.... the entire city of jacksonville seemed surprised with all the bad press received during 2005 superbowl, job well done for exposing your true colors (or lack thereof) or should I say your true KKK costumes.

well, Mr Mayor, when you were elected you were elected to service the entire Jacksonville community, including african americans.

I AGREE, RACISM SHOULD NOT BE A PART OF AMERICAN LIFE. THESE BLACK FIREFIGHTERS ARE RISKING THEIR LIVES TO SAVE WHO EVER NEEDS THEIR HELP. DO THEY STOP TO ASK WHAT RACE THAT THEY ARE TRYING TO SAVE? I THINK NOT.

"This type of behavior does not represent our city or our fire department..." -Mayor Peyton Unfortunately this is exactly the type of behavior that represents Jacksonville, and surrounding counties. This needs to stop, NOW! Peyton needs to get out of his office and personally put some people on unpaid LOA...To say this isn't reflective of NE FL is simply ignorant...everyone need to view a independent film Darn Not Walk Alone. This is just a AA History month headline...this type of behavior is alive and flourishing...It can not be tolerated!

***My personal goal is to make it illegal to display a Confederate Flag in St. Johns County-the south LOST, get over it! If any one is willing to help me get it on the ballot let me know.***

get out of the country if you cant handle freedom of speech. you probably want to take away a persons right to bear arms. Ive been discriminated upon by blacks and to say the least they are much more prejudice than whites.

I agree with Craig the flag is a form of freedom of speech. If you take away the Confederate flag then what will be next, your african colors you proudly display, get over it. Your american not african american, The reason there is so much rascism in Jacksonville is not all on the whites. "African Americans" create most of the crime, it isn't in the white neigborhoods that you have to be scared to walk the street at night. Now to get back to the topic at hand, I know a couple of firefighters in Jacksonville, the newest "RUMOUR" and I stress that point, is that these firefighters with the ropes around their gear "put it there themselves" to create a upstir of racial propaganda. Not one to believe what I hear from the locals, but it will be very interesting to find out who put them there if they ever will...

This is a bit late to reply in this discussion, but i just couldn't leave the last 2 comments as the final word if for no other sake than the record of the discussion for future surfers like myself.
I'm from Jax and, of course, the racist accussations are completely true, though it's definitely not a stand out city in that regard.
But... regarding the "american, not african-american" line, come on, blacks did not segregate themselves in this country. They have been given, forcebly, the status of second class citizen. How soon the "separate, but equal" laws are forgotten. Several years of affirmative action cannot possibly be expected to have covered the history on which this country was built. No one should "just get over it." If anyone should get over it, it's those continuing to believe they have some claim to "American" entitlement because their descendents were either colonists or slave owners.
Sure, you don't have to be scared to walk in a "white neighborhood" at night... if you're white. if you're not, you might want to prepare for a "friendly" visit from a man in blue with a giant light. The fact that we can even call neighborhoods "white" or "black" should more than allude to the fact that segregation still exists. Sundown towns were legal up into the 70s in many parts of the country. If you don't know what a sun-down town is, look it up, everyone should know completely what our history is. We're still living it.
One thing i'll give both "Jack" and "Craig" is that the flag is an issue of speech. it cannot be legislated without creating very problematic possibilities. Getting rid of the flag, as horrible as what it now stands for, isn't going to eliminate racism. But it will encourage a policy of censorship and state silencing instead of discussion, transparency and openness.
And for folks like Craig... be wary of telling anyone to "love it, or leave it," - if the power in this country ever shifts, like current demographic trends suggest, it may be you walking up the boarding dock.

Dawn - You're not the only one looking to ban the Confederate flag in Florida. Check out the following website:

I think you'll be glad you did.

Craig - Pornography is also protected free speech, but it's regulated. While the government shouldn't be allowed to tell a person what symbols they can tattoo on their body or worship in the privacy of their own home, they can regulate symbols and pictures that violate community standards, like the Confederate flag. Everyday in schools children recite the Pledge of Alliegence. The government can prevent the display of a symbol that violates the oath of alliegence within school zones.

Besides, when did it not become treason to display the Confederate flag? The United States is the only country in the world that allows the flag of a group of radical rebel separatists to openly displayed without punishment. In the late 1860's and early 1870's anyone who openly displayed the flag surely would have been tried and convicted of treason.

The Confederate flag didn't re-emerge in this country until the 1960's, during the civil rights movement. I can only assume that some people are more racist than patriotic.

After looking at the website Tom directed us to, I agree that the flag should be banned. Did the Supreme Court ever rule that the Confederate flag enjoyed First Amendment protection. A case can be made that it doesn't.

That site is nothing more than a bash Gate and Mayor Peyton site.

Of course, the group is trying to ban the Confederate flag and boycott businesses that sell it. That's what boycott efforts do, they bash a particular businesses or an industry.

Did you figure that out yourself Scott?

Sorry Scott, I was rude. But you obviously don't find the Confederate flag offensive, or you wouldn't have referred to the site as "a bash Gate and Mayor Peyton site.

The ONLY problem the site has with Gate is that they sell the Confederate flag. How else did they bash Gate? Same with the Mayor. The group points out that the Mayor still owns part of the company that sells Confederate memorabilia anīd he is being accused of racism.

If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck and you call it a duck, its not bashing.

I only found out about this now. This kind of stuff makes me sick! I really hope they get punished to the fullest extent! Sad thing of it is that these firefighters would probably go out & save the homes of the ones who did this to them.

Steven, my point is there are many businesses that sell these items, but I don't see any others listed. Why single out Gate? If the intent is to boycott businesses that sell Confederate flags and other items then let's see everyone listed. Untill that happens, I stand by my comment that they are just out to get Gate.

What surprises me here is that everyone believes everything eluded to in an extremely one sided add. I donít know everything thatís going on up in Jax., but I must say everyone is jumping to conclusions. When you do that it makes you a bigot or a reverse bigot at the lest. Prejudging others is not my favorite sport. Blacks have had promotional preferences in the Jax FD. It seems to me that pulling out a Confederate flag and a hangmanís nooses is over the top. Differently pulling out the extremis in the race card. Donít roll over just because a minority says roll over.

Scott,

What are some other businesses? And please don't refer to small vendors at the flea market or Mom & Pop collector shops.

If you provide the names of large businesses (like Gate), I will personally contact the site and request that they be added.

Wal-Mart recently dropped a grocery item because of a Confederate flag depicted on the label. I shop at many area stores and I can't recall ever seeing the Confederate flag being sold.
