Montmorency County Likely to Cut Patrols, Officers
Posted: 11/4/2009

Voters in Montmorency County said no to two millages that would help keep sheriff's patrols on the road. Now, the sheriff says fewer officers will be out on patrol, and the county may have to cut up to two officer positions.

The department already lost a few officers earlier this year to balance the budget. So, the sheriff says officers are spread thin as it is.

Couple that with an aging fleet of patrol vehicles. Mechanics are trying to keep their cars running, but the sheriff says it's expensive.

Because the equipment millage also failed, he says officers may have to park the cars and only respond to emergencies when called.

The sheriff says he will know by mid-December if officers will be cut.

9&10's Jodi Hathaway and photojournalist Joel Deaner have more on how these failed millages will impact the safety of the community.

I think the county is safer with more of these "patrol" men off the streets! Moms and dads, your daughters will be safe now! Why was the county asking for more equipment money, when the county commisioners generously bought the dept. "new" hardly used patrol cars a couple of months ago? Remember that? We need more clunkers? What we need is more wiener mobiles for the weiners with badges roaming the county. Yikes! Predators! What they call patroling, other people call waiting in the bushes. I wish i had a job that easy! The voters have spoken, and the weiners with badges in this county do not have the support of the citizens. Cant argue with that!

You know they say Karma is a bitch, and I hope you don't have to find out first hand. You will probably be the first one yelling from the roof tops if you ever have an emergency and the sheriffs don't respond as quickly as you need them because they don't have the man power or the vehicles to do it in. Hope you never see the realization of the possibility's because of your attitude! I don't know where you can possibly come off saying our officers are predators. I have seen them out and about in the community and have never seen one of them acting inappropriately. I only pray that if you need them they can get to you in time.

I wish you would walk a mile in a police officer's shoes before spouting off about how easy it is. You don't have a clue what they go through to try to make our community a safer place to live. The only people who think patrolling is "waiting in the bushes" are those who are probably breaking the law in the first place. Your ranting and name-calling just makes you appear to be an ignorant, uneducated person with a vendetta against law enforcement. I hope they are busy when you call them for help.

Hmmm...do you think the reason the millage was defeated had more to do with what the county commissioners might do with what normally should be in the law enforcement budget? I think we're afraid that if we voted to provide specific tax money toward law enforcement, the commissioners would really cut the sherrif's dept. budget on the county end. We'd be paying higher taxes for police protection that would be at the same level we have now. I'd bet if we could secure a promise that would not happen, the vote might go way different next time.

If you attended the 2 prior board meeting, you would have heard only one Commissioner ask the board to promise they would not dip in to that sheriffs fund if it were passed. Commissioner Margaret Deagostino asked them during that public meeting and...They refused to answer her. I give her credit...she exposed the violation of the open meeting act and had the commissioners...LaFleche..Ferg uson And the missing link LOUIS Corky Hubert.. Tom Young? Useless answer for the stupid Clunker purchase Hura Margaret

No, I do not attend the meetings. Can't stomach the stupidity quite frankly. Apparently, the majority of commissioners don't care what the county residents want anyway. I'm in Margaret's district so I can hardly do anything about the other commisioners everyone seems to be so disturbed with. Either gather yourselves up a sensible candidate, secure signatures for a recall and start over or put up with the nonsense.

funny how folks come to there decisions speak carefully as most of the fleet has over 100k and some with many more, folks can be proud of themselves as this vote will put local folks out of a job, seems to me that it is illegal to drink and drive yet most of the arrest for this crime as of late have been folks that are 4 and 5 times the legal driving limit and btw they dont drive so well which makes them an easy target not to mention plenty of folks call in to report there great driving seems no one wants the police until they need them and with negative law breaking citizens on the loose just hope one of those .15 or .24 drivers dont hit you and your family as your on your way home it simply amazes me the folks that dont want law enforcement out doing there jobs to keep us safe, so remember the next time you have the need for law enforcement you may have to wait due to limited officers and poor running equipment and dont you the negative voter dare complain when it takes the time to reach you as your responsible to what is about to happen in this 2010 year good grief shame shame shame

I agree with the Dragonlady. The reason the millages failed is that nobody trusted the commisioners to not just sneak the whole thing out the back door of the general fund, from which the SD gets its money.

I can see the point where the millages might not have passed because people don't trust the commissioners, but I hope that's not the case. There has got to be a way to remove those commissioners without "cutting off our nose to spite our face" by turning down a millage that would've ensured better equipment to help keep everyone safe. I'm wondering if the reason could also be because so many people are out of work and although on unemployment, we all know that doesn't provide for ALL needs. Just barely provides food for the table. Some people simply CANNOT pay anymore than they already do in taxes.

HA! I have the utmost respect for our troopers. Our deputies, however, thats a different story. They are a bunch of hypocrites. These are the same guys who are just shadowing the bars every weekend. You can see the undersheriff at the bar any given weekend, DRINKING. Designated driver? I don't think so. Talleys, coaches, JandJs. There are pics of our deputies splattered all over the internet and Facebook drinking at the bars, and being totally lewd. Grossman, Brown, also some employees of the sheriff dept. just to name a few. Do you think they have DD? Doubt it! But when its their night on, watch out. F'ing hypocrites! Do you think they get hauled off to jail by their "brothers"? Double standard! These are the people "protecting' you! Hope you dont have an emergency when they are too busy at the local bar.

I have read this website for several months now without commenting, but the post above mine is absolutely hiddeous. First off, I have seen these officers in the bar on OFF-DUTY time just like you have. Just like anyone else they are entitled to do this when not working, and yes they are "drinking", big deal! Thats what most people do at a bar. They do NOT drive after they have consumed ETOH (alcohol) though. I know this from seeing them first hand. They always have a DD. So as far as your assumption doubting that they have a DD, I'm sorry but you've assumed WRONG. Also your comment suggesting there may not be a deputy available during an emergency due to them drinking is nothing short of slander. There is a consistant schedule of deputies for day and night shift. Also your lack of intelligence shows when you refer to "Grossman". Last I knew the sheriff department didn't employ the former bears quarterback. To the boys in brown, keep doing what your doing. You're entitled to relax and sit back with a beer on your own time. You're doing a great job and many of us do appreciate you.

I see what I see and I know what I know. And you, sir, are wrong. These guys do NOT have a DD, it is plain to see. Seaver is the worst offender. I guess the old saying goes - do as I say, not as I do. And I think it is totally inappropriate for our BOYS in brown to drink at a bar. Especially with no safe ride home. Wait, they are safe, because they are immune to the "law" in this county. Go ahead and keep blindly defending your BOYS, but you will not change my mind.

The "boys in brown" have every right to be drinking in the bar (provided they are not wearing the "brown" at the time), just like you and I have the right to be drinking in a bar. Everybody knows that they're playing with fate if they decide to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking alcohol. That being said, I don't begrudge any member of law enforcement the opportunity to kick back and relax. Many people do not know how stressful it is to be a police officer. They see some horrible things that they will never forget... and they try to keep us all safe from the monsters who are walking around these days. If I ever see a police officer enjoying a cold one, I'll be buying his next one!!
Thank you, members of law enforcement, for your service.
