Theres nothing wrong with wanting to seek the truth.The residents of Montmorency County deserve that.Theres nothing wrong with a balanced debate on why Sherriff Baum got terminated from the Tri-township ambulance service and theres nothing wrong with concerned residents whom feel that Sherriff Baum will screw anybody to protect his livelyhood.Lucky for me I don't live in Montmorency County;but I'm concerned for you the residents whom have to vote in August for sherriff.

Hello out there! We have only lived in Atlanta 2 years. When we needed help the Sheriff or under sheriff were not available. I called several times over a large of amount of money absconded from us over a contract between a drywaller in town and us. I left messages, and calls for help on what to do, and they were not returned. The only help we received was from 2 deputy's that did their best. We recently tried again to get ahold of Mr. Baum and was told by the dispatcher he wasn't available, she didn't know when and if he would be in, same with the under sheriff, and secretary.(Oh secretary would be in next day) but she also never returned our calls. I talked to a commisioner on the sheriff's committee and she called Sheriff Baum and told him he better call me. He did this time, but lied, when I asked "How did you know I called?" "My dispatcher told me", was his response. I said, "I find that hard to believe, because I did not give her my name or phone number, and she didn't ask if she could take a message.(pause), "oh a commissioner did call me this a.m. and said you called. Hmmmmmm! I have since talked with Mr. Don Edwards, and he assured me that would not happen on his watch. I really feel uncomfortable with the sheriff we have now, and don't feel we can trust him or feel safe. If the department doesn't know where he is; who does? Please make a change, and vote for DON EDWARDS. THANK YOU!

Sorry about your troubles, and welcome to the area. Things are a bit fired up now due to elections and as you said we need change. Hopefully the future will bring better things for you and our community.

Baker_123....Isn't your problem more of a civil lawsuit issue rather that a sheriff department issue. He didn't break a law or did he? The contractor may have not full-filled his contract and you could then take him to court.

I would think theres more than civil there. If two deputies were trying to help seems more than just civil. Wouldn't professional law enforcement officers advise him if it was civil and he neeed to contact either small claims, building inspector, State licensing, or an attorney?

Amamnesis, I would hope that law enforcement would guide them the right way. I was just posting on what was stated in Baker_123's post. Small claims or which ever court may handle it is probably a better avenue to take in my opinion. If there isn't a law broken, what is the sheriff's department able to do? Just an observation.

My understanding of Baker_123's problem is that the contractor took the money knowing he was not going to do the job (he left their home cashed the check and left town.) The deputy's made a report and the prosecutor refused to bring charges as this "man" had so many other legal issues that did end up with him going to prison. Baker should try to pursue this again. The contractor is eligible to come up for parole in August of this year. If she can not get our local prosectutor to do her job of filing charges (possibly larceny by conversion? or taking money under false pretenses?) Baker needs to go higher than this county's prosecutor.

Ponderer, If that's the issue at hand, she probably should keep trying as you stated. In this day and age, proof is everything as long as she can stand behind her claims, thats way that this should be pursued.

Understood, I would think they would steer him in the right direction though. But I do understand your proffering that.

That would be either Larceny by conversion or larceny by trick depending on the Prosecutors frame of mind that day. Definely a felony though

Evidently her frame of mind the day she was approached was he has enough legal problems that will keep him in jail for a while so why bother pursuing it, which really is not fare to the family he took from. I think they should go higher than our prosecutor if our office refuses to pursue it.

If a crime happened where 2 deputies responded and the prosecutor ignored the crime while the sherriff lied to Baker 123 maybe its time to go to the state police but not around Montmorency County where the prosecutor/sherriff know the troopers.

Baker 123 only you can determine whether a crime was committed against you and then make decisions on your beliefs.

By the way there was a comment made on tuesday July 22 by "The Hedgehog" that concerns me if true about the sherriff and Dans ex girlfriend suggesting rape under Michigan law but where was the cops to investigate that?And then theres this Baker 123 comment that intrigues me but obviously if crimes have been committed then someone has to come foward and hope the real cops will do their job.

This was a comment made on this forum, suggesting rape. This was not an allegation formally made by the young lady involved in this tryst. It has nothing to do with "cops" doing their job and everything to do with gossip and inuendo. Only the girl involved could file such a charge for an investigation to take place and as yet to date she hasn't done so and only she knows why. It is only conjecture on parts of people on this site that would turn it into rape. If you read comments on this forum it has gone from Doug not doing his job to stealing from Tri to being a whore dog now to a suspected rapist, people on this site need to see how things get out of control. Remember the old game where you whispered something to someone next to you and they whispered it to the person next to them and so on till it got back to you and it never finished with what was actually said. That is a good description of this forum. What a sad group of people to live on "fact" that are truly only whispers.

Ponderer have you considered that the young girl might be afraid since the guy in question is the sherriff?And its fact that Tri-township terminated Sherriff Baum;guess you need to read Alpena News or the Tribune.You may be able to manipulate the truth but you cannot manipulate the evidence.

Are you that girl? If so only you can speak the truth, but since I doubt you are that girl, you have no right to assume that she "might be afraid". If you have personally heard this come out of her mouth then you know nothing to be the truth, you only know what the rest of us know gossip. And another thing I agree you can not manipulate the evidence, and since nothing was filed there is no evidence. CASE CLOSED!! If in the future any other woman should truly have an incident like this happen I would hope they would contact the state police and file charges, it cannot be tolerated, but you also cannot condemn when there is no proof. Just keep your eyes open so it doesn't happen a 2nd time.

You know that the Sheriff lied because you did not leave your name or phone number. Have you ever heard of caller ID? Even we have it up here in the north woods.

Your blog sounds like there are some assumptions and a politically motivated message.

Hello again, I am astounded at the people who cared to comment on my posting. We did present to the P.Attorney, "Larceny by trick", but she said that was civil. Thanks for all the advise. We will certainly look into those ideas.$3,500.00 is a lot of money to us. I really was not trying to be political, but what other choice do I have but Mr. Edwards. He actually came to our home, after I had left a phone message with his wife. We didn't know alot about him, and had questions. To us, that says alot. Sheriff Baum was only too happy to end the forced conversation with me. As I said he was told to call me from a commissioner on the sheriff's committee. We really like Atlanta, and have met a lot of nice people here. I just pray that the right person gets the job. Thanks for listening.
