Isn't it amazing what our men and women in uniform will do for their country? Even though there is a fairly large contingent that would spit upon a soldier before thanking him, they still serve and sacrifice.

The preacher didn't give us freedom of religion, the veteran did. The press didn't give us freedom of speech, the veteran did. A lawyer didn't give us a right to a fair and speedy trial, a veteran did.

To any vets who might happen to read this; thank you.

Happy Memorial Day.

As a matter of fact, I rode over the stretch of highway mentioned while going to and from a family reunion yesterday.

I think that there was some confusion during the Viet Nam war that resulted in a misplaced reaction. It too, the Viet Nam War, was wrapped in the flag and patriotism. It was easier to blame the soldier than it was to admit the dishonesty of our high officials. We have learned since then and will not make that mistake again.

Why would anyone blame a soldier for a war? They did what they were told and did it well. 58,000 of them gave their all. Perhaps you made that mistake, but I didn't.

I believe Patriot said that his brother died in the Vietnam War, so I doubt the confusion he spoke of was his own. Perhaps you made a mistaken assumption.

e p,

Back during the Viet Nam war, soldiers were not supposed to go off-base unless they were in civies. That was in the states.

You could only tavel in dress uniform or civilian clothing. A ton of soldiers who returned from Viet Nam were actually spit upon and harrassed.
Many of us, while serving duty in the states, guickly got out of uniform when leaving base, because you became a target.

Lest you forget, America was going through an enormous cultural divide.

War protests all over America's College campuses.
War protest from all the hippy's and flower children.
America was experiencing a colosal drug problem then.
All the most popular music, rock and folk, either promoted drugs and sex, or protested the war.

Many in the military paid for what happened at Kent State and the entire military complex was soiled and dirty. It was easy for drug induced protesters to blame the soldier.

Simultaneously, the nation was feeling the pangs of racism.

Dem. Governor Lester Maddox, of Georgia, and Dem. Governor George Wallace, of Alabama were two of the most outspoken proponents of racial segregation.(60' thru 69')

Dem. Senator Robert Byrd, W. Virg. was then a long-time member of the KKK, and would not tolerate any talk of intergration.(early 60's)

Pres. John Kennedy was assasinated. Pres. candidate Bobby Kennedy was assasinated. And Martin Luther King was assasinated.
Riots broke out all over America.

All of America's institutions were under attack, and extremely liberal college profs. were responsible for inciting much of what happened.
Still are.

Then we had the Chicago eight in 69' The eight men involved in the trial were Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden, David Dellinger, Lee Weiner, John Froines, Rennie Davis, and Bobbie Seale. All of them war protester and far left-wing socialists.

We had the Catonsville nine who protested by burning their draft cards.

We also had to endure the "Black Panthers," and there antics.

That was the era when America began it's descent downhill, and it hasn't stopped yet.

All those war protesters and hippies and socialist leaning Americans are now Americas College profs, industry leaders, liberal politicians, and pastors in denominations which teach extreme liberal theological views.

I was there. In fact, I helped end a war protest on the KSU campus before it hardly started. They made the mistake of gathering on a lawn next to the ROTC building. Coincidentally, an Animal Science class was also meeting there. The Cadets were warned to do nothing. We Aggies, however, weren't told anything of the sort. The protest lasted less than 5 minutes. Yes, I know, Patriot and Marie, I infringed on there rights to assembly and free speech. Screw 'em. They cared nothing of our right to have an uninterrupted class or our right to support our friends in Vietnam. When one person's rights infringes on another person's rights, exceptions need to be made.

What makes you think that I was a war protester? My brother was there and I certainly would not have done anything to disrespect him or his buddies. As a matter of fact, I was very much against the protests at the time. We had none in the area where I lived. The protesters were very wrong in disrespecting the soldiers.

After much reflection and more information came out, I became very disturbed that our government went in with a restricted plan with no strategy to win or even cleanly exit the conflict.

The war was sanctioned by congress after a reported second on American ships in the Gulf of Tonkin. It was found that there was no second attack in the Gulf of Tonkin. The outcome of the incident was the passage by Congress of the Southeast Asia Resolution even though President Johnson himself later admitted that there was no second attack.

It was a war based on false pretext and dishonesty. I am sorry that many had to serve and were casualties for a bogus and contrived war. This does not excuse the protesters for their mistreatment of the soldiers. It, however, dispirited many Americans to learn that their young were maimed and died because a few old men in Washington saw fit to put them in harms way with no clear and necessary reason.

I understand why you who went to Viet Nam are bitter. It is a hard pill to swallow knowing that the sacrifice was for little, and your welcome home was disgraceful. At least you didn't come home in a box.

That sounds a lot like what ol' George Dubya was up to - ZZ Top and all. Although granted, he didn't protest the war - he just ducked out.

And you think I'm crazy. At least I don't lay out an unfeeling line like that and expect vets to just deal with it.

If you had read the posts, you would have seen that my brother did come home in a box. They understand.

I was in Washington DC on March 17th, 2007 when Jane Fonda and Shehan led their reported thousands to the Pentagon. Funny thing is, there was only about 500 of them left by the time they got across the bridge because they turned around and went home complaining that it was too cold. But I went there to counter protest against the ilk of Fonda and Shehan. The real reason they turned around was that there were about 30,000 Veterans lining both sides of the bridge as they crossed and the high school kids and others they bussed in calling it a field trip packed up and left. At that counter protest I had the pleasure of meeting this young man in his early 20s that worked in the Pentagon for the Army. He told me about this book. "The Troops Need You America". I bought a copy that day. Then I took it home and I read it and I went the website and downloaded the media kit. That book was the plan for the surge that the troops themselves wrote. Petreus signed on to it which is why he was assigned to Iraq. And it worked. The troops tried and tested those same techniques before they wrote the book. They knew the techniques worked. The one thing that it never said in that book is about how the media led so many people to believe that our troops just wanted to come home without finishing the job the right way. Liberating Iraq and making a full ally in the war on terror. It was one memorable day I'll never forget. But the best thing I got out of being there was the book. I learned that day there was something I could do for them more than just sending them a care package. Which is very meaningful to them by the way, but it worked. My Representative called me in person and we discussed this. And I let her know, do the right thing, not the politically correct thing!
