Now for my comment. Firefighters are not heroes. There are no heroes. Sorry America. Do you know what they found in the firetruck at the bottom of the World Trade Center? JEANS. The firemen looted a high end clothing store and stacked all the expensive jeans in the back seat of the truck! Most firemen are just guys who couldn't get a better gig somewhere else. It is a low paying and quite boring job and this guy was just trying to spice it up. Enjoy your day waxing your big, red fire engine!

One has to pounder the thought. Do they not give these firefighters a mental test? I know IFD does. As far as being shocked I am not. Everyone is human and you are going to get bad apples in any career field.

Tell that to them when they come save your home, property, or you. Your right we are scum.

The Firefighter was not a real firefighter, he was truly scum. No true firefighter would do these things.

P.S. You got the hero part right, we are not, and never claimed to be. Maybe you should come spend some time at a firehouse and open your mind to what these people go thru to keep you safe.

At least you have your name right.. IGNORANCE. Just what do you do Mr. Ignorance. I am guessing office work and you were turned down for a job as a firefighter. It's ok to be jealous of the brotherhood that is the fire service, some can be and some can't. There are those that do and there are those that talk about it, since you can't... you talk. Good luck with your miserable life. We don't ask to be heroes, nor do we ask to be recognized for what we do. We do our job because it feels really good to stop a smile child from crying or help the elderly when they are sick, when no one else will, including you. So when you open your mouth to express what you think is the truth do it in the presence of a firefighter. If you can't your not a man anyway. To those in the brotherhood, Merry Christmas and be safe!

Geez, I have gotten over my childhood fears that fireman started fires, so they could put them out.

Now, some 50 years later, it become true, again!

This makes me really sad. I can tell you right now, as the wife of a firefighter, they don't claim to be heroes. They know they can get higher paying jobs out there, but instead, they choose to save the lives of MORONS like you and other citizens, because they love what they do.
There are bad people out there in the firefighting field, just as there are in every business, but the fact is, most firefighters come to their job on a day to day basis to assist those in need.
I hope that your house never catches on fire or you or anyone in your family never needs a firefighter or EMT to save your life. But just think about that, because if you did, they would be there to help you, regardless of the idiotic comments you feel you need to make about their boring, lowing paying jobs, that they just chose because they couldn't find anything better to do.

I'm NOT making exuses for them, but how many of you really read the article? The properties were NOT occupied by anybody and they were ABANDONED...I agree it wasn't the smartest thing to do, but they didn't hurt anyone, so calling them scum and downing firefighters seems a bit much... please believe that I absolutly do NOT agree with what my friend did, so don't get upset with me...but come on...if you are that lame to say that you don't trust firefighters anymore, then I pray for you IF (god forbid) your house catches on fire...better find a good hose and some big buckets..I highly doubt that you WONT call the fire department...people make mistakes, and I bet that ALL of us have.

ok, i know people are free to speak thier minds, but this really upsets me, what this person said about firefighters being high school dropouts and whatnot, shame on you, my father was a firefighter and was killed in the line of duty ten years ago, he was the greatist person i knew, and the people he worked with were like his second family, now let me get to my point here, they dont label themselves as heroes, but we all know that a person who risks their own life to save someone who says things like this, are true heroes, i applaud all that they do, and wished i had the courage to do something like that, yes there are some people that dont need to be doing it, like setting fires to go put them out, but things like this happen and we move on and learn from it, so i am not going to be hateful and call you an idiot, but lets just hope these high school dropouts who use the job as an refuge, have to help you one day or your family, but they will do their job and ask for no reward or no gratitude, because they do care, when others dont

I called 6 departments in central Indiana (you can do the same thing). Across the board they stated they wouldn't consider someone without having completed high school. All but one stated that in most cases people are competing with people with college degrees.

Sounds like you tried and couldn't get a job and in a case or several you were beat by women and minorities. Keep trying!
