Former officer sentenced in sex case

A former police sergeant in Chilhowie has been sentenced to jail time for sex crimes involving a teenage girl.

Dear Mama said> I have kept up with the news and the talk revolving around this case with the police chief and sgt. Doss.. BUT for the life of me -I cannot figure out why Doss got so much more freedom and lesser sentence than Sheffield. From what I know and hear- Doss's DNA was everywhere- now how does he just get a slap on the hand from a Judge for this? The girl told a lot of people that she was 18 years old ( I was there too) but that fact did not help Sheffield out, did it? I think Doss should have gotten more time in prison than Sheffield- looks like Doss knows how to lie and who the lies go to that believed him. Sounds like that Sheffield's lawyer let the ball drop for him. But of course- I know Dwayne Sheffield and he always took up for his "so called friends" and his fellow worker- that I doubt he would have turned on Doss or Mr. Runyon to get a better deal.
Mr.(ex-cop) Runyon is another little lying cry baby. Sheffield always tried to protect him when he made ALL those mistakes as a cop and now I guess the only way to get by in life-is to lie and cheat on friends, because Sheffield is behind bars and cannot protect him now. Doss and Runyon had better be good little boys and stop this lying and cheating their ways through life- because it will come back to haunt you one day and God will have the final say in all this mess. So you 2 better think hard and pray for forgiveness for what you 2 have done to a good man and his family. Good luck to you both with your freedom- hope you can bear the heartache that will always be with you whether you admit it or not. Dwayne was a friend to ALL and you should never forget that. He did not lie to get to stay at home and he was not afraid to face what the other 2 ex-cops should be facing also (especially Doss)

Dwayne got a more severe punishment because he wasn't smart. He denied the whole thing until it was too late. Doss got a deal before Sheffield did so he got a lighter sentence. Had Sheffield admitted his part in the situation then he would have gotten a deal before the day of the trial. You can't blame Doss for being smarter than Sheffield. And lets not forget that Sheffield agreed to the deal.

Dwayne DID admit his part in the whole thing. What he denied is the charges that were placed against him (Rape, etc. the OVER CHARGING!!) You are telling me if Dwayne was willing to lie on Doss and Runyon then he would have gotten a lesser sentence?? If so, I will say Dwayne is fine where is he is at if that is what he had to do to get a so called "deal". That shows what type of MAN he is, because he DID consider these two people to be good friends of his. I don't know what you consider to be "smart" but it sure is hell not what Runyon and Doss did. The deal Sheffield made was the only option for him considering what the other two liars were willing to say to help themselves!! They started the ball rolling, so let the games begin!!!!!!

Screw Poor Dwayne he was placed and payed to be in charge and he failed. In my mind he's not charged with enough, so screw um.

Sounds to me like that Dwayne got it ALL - he is sentenced to over 3 years for NOTHING- he was the one that had to take the sh-- that Doss and Runyon spit out because THEY were chicken and went whining and begging to the prosecuting attorney and it worked!!

Doss lied and ratted his way out- he KNOWS he is guilty -- he got maybe 3 months after all is said and done-- He is a LIAR and a pshycho to society and the Judge allowed him to get away with what he did -- may his conscious eat him to the bone. That proves to a lot of people how your top officials are thinking- " tell me some lies and gossip on your friend and I'll make sure you are taken care of"- you call that a fair justice system- I don't think so. How can Doss sleep at night knowing what he has done and then lied out of it and putting the blame on everyone except himself? He may be a big tall guy and a big man- but his heart must be VERY heavy and in my opinion- he is just a very SMALL human being with a very troubled soul. He MUST be???!@!!

Who is it over and done with?? It sure is not with the one pulling time in jail! It is not over with the children who can not touch or see their own father! People say sheffield was innocent....then why did he not plead No Guilty and go to trial. Everyone on here talks about what a pillar of the community he was. Then his jury would have been members of that community. The victim would have had to testify to convict him. He would have gotten a better deal.
Well the truth is the Sheffield was not the pillar of the community some of you claim and you know this. He cheated on his wife many times and sometimes him and Doss shared women at the PD. He even laughed when his wife went off and trashed his camper after catching him cheating one time and people were calling in to report it.
He and Doss messed with a juvenile which they knew to be illegal and she told on them. They got busted and Doss decided to be the bigger man and tell the truth about what happened and he got the better deal. Sheffield had the same chance to come clean but he decided to hide behind his Alford Plea.
Truth be told neither man should have ever worn a badge and been trusted to protect and serve.
When you play with fire long enough your going to get burnt. Doss got second degree burns and Sheffield got third.

NO Doss did not tell the truth- he stabbed his best friend in the back and ran with it. If you think that he told the truth- NOT!!! I'm surprised that there was not more officers charged. There has always been a notorious bunch in Smyth county for fooling around. Using their badges for personal gain. I could name you about ten to fifteen more (deputies, troopers, officers) along with their partners to boot. Most of them were all consenting adults. There was no rape just alot of adultry and fornicating at taxpayers expense. What about the gang bangs at the bar in Marion where the dispatcher leased. I heard there was several fights among officers over some of the ladies. I.m sorry for all of those involved and their children and families. I hope that this woke up the rest of the bunch and they straighten it up. Smyth County does have a few good officers, deputies, and troopers.
What about all of the drug use? Man, this whole world has gone to hell. It's not just the police. It's our teachers and preachers. As long as you have the fruit, somebody will bite into it from time to time.
