I drive Rt 2 every day to Waltham, and the average speed is 70+mph in spots. Tailgating is also an issue. The speeding slows down at Concord, but picks up again near Rt 128. To avoid getting killed, I leave my house at 5:30am, as after 6:00am weekdays, Rt. 2 becomes a 30 mile long high speed parking lot.

It is getting scarier all the time, route 2 is only part of it. If you do not move fast enough the car behind you is right on your bumper. They literally want you to move out of the way. I slowed down for a pot hole the other day and was almost rammed from behind. Something drastic needs to change.

Iquit using Rt 2 years ago to travel to work by Rt2 to 495 to Lawrence because it was too dangerous. The n I went by Rt. 2A to Leominster to 225 to Groton to 495 to Lawrence. It was heaven on earth compared to the old way, and diddn't take any longer. Ireturned the same way.

Cops are not going ot stop anyone from the mall to Shirley. There is no room to pull them over.

Plus they are too lazy

Imagine how many murderers, rapists and child molesters could be captured if the police didn't worry about speeders, tailgaters and the like?!!! Leave the little peons alone, and go after the big offenders!!!

Leave the little peons alone and go after the big criminals!!! More police available for the big offenders, more that will be put behind bars, where they belong.

Part of the problem are those that feel they need to control the speed limit. So many sit in the passing lane doing 50mph, GET OUT of the passing lane. I have no issue with you passing a slower car and then moving back into the travel lane, but don't sit in the passing lane and tie up traffic for 15 miles. When I went through Driver's Ed, they taught me about a Passing Lane and Travel Lane, but people think they own the road.

people also need to be educated on the meaning of the word "yeild". some of these people who pull onto the highway with no respect for the people already there going 55mph. They act as if their onramp is the highway and they can just drive on at 55mph and everyone else can get out of their way. There is a yeild sign for a purpose..........do not pull out unless it is safe to do so.

The Eastbound exit at Searstown is a classis example of "yield, what's that?". They need a STOP sign instead, as people fly onto Rt 2 all the time totally ignoring the YIELD sign. Ironic, the State Police Barracks are right there also. Maybe the State Police need to station a cruiser right there. Townsend does it all the time, right across from the Police Station every morning and evening, and catch a number of people ignoring the 20mph school zone sign.

Daisy, the way I was taught was that you should be going the speed limit when you enter the highway, But yes, you are right, you only enter when it is safe to do so. But again, there are people on the highway that believe it is thier spot, rather than moving over when the lane is open to let somebody get on the highway. Sounds like it is a bunch of people forgetting the meaning of "Courtesy"!!!

It is not just Route 2. From what I read here, I guess it is most of Massachusetts. I live and work in Fitchburg so I assumed it was just Fitchburg/Leominster drivers who drive outrageously reckless. They jump the lights, drive double the speed limit, cross the line into oncoming traffic because someone in front of them is taking a turn too slowly (as far as they are concerned anyway), etc., etc. I could go on for hours about the atrocious driving habits in Fitchburg. I am actually considering making a sign for my car that says “WARNING! This driver obeys traffic laws.” Like it or not, I actually stop at a STOP sign, I drive the speed limit, I know what yield means, I don’t park in the middle of a TRAVEL LANE while dumping my kid into oncoming traffic at a school because I am too lazy to pull off the street or actually into the school parking lot. When did they stop teaching rules of the road? It all boils down to, some people think their time is so much more important than the person in the next car and they don’t care about safety.

something to ponder........

If the speed limits everywhere in the U.S. are say between 65-75 why make cars go any faster?

what is the point.

maybe we'll burn less fuel and cars will cost less to build. What it the point of having a car that does 80+MPH nothing good can come of it.

Then you are intentionally trying to make someone angry. You're actually contributing to road rage. Why not simply yield to faster traffic and pull over as you're supposed to. Situation diffused right away and you didn't cause an accident. Or is that too adult?

What if the act is happening on a non-highway when you're doing the speed limit or slightly above? Shouldn't the person tailgating put some distance between them and the person they're tailgating, or would that be too adult?
