Delivery man or not, how does one put over 80K miles per year on a vehicle? That's an average of over 320 miles PER DAY assuming he only works week days. And that's EVERY week day since 1996???? Get a new job, dude.

I currently have 75,000 miles on my Mountain Bike; took 8 years to do it. That's alot harder than driving.

Not surprised that it's a Chevy. I always have and always will own a Chevy. Never had any problems with any Chevy car. Just the normal wear and tear maintanence.

Great story

IF IT WAS A TOYOTA,IT WOUD NOT BE NEWS!
That's because a '91 Toyota would have fallen (literally) to pieces by this point. Japanese pickups and SUVs from that era were pure garbage. No rustproofing, transmissions that were not built to handle the rigors of what people use trucks for, severely underpowered engines...

Let's face it, there's really NOTHING newsworthy about an early '90s Japanese truck.

He would have had to drive that truck 219 miles a day every day for 12 years to put that mileage on that truck.

I don't believe it for a minute.

That would have been great if he got in an accident and totaled the truck right before the million mile mark

Well, in spite of some tasteless naysayers, I think he's really accomplished something here. I presently have around 340k on a manual-transmission diesel Dodge Ram, and a Chevy with a 350 - V8 or a Lexus LS400 are probably the most likely to go this distance.

As others have said, change all your fluids regurarly (5k on my 12 quarts of oil) and take care of little creaks, squeaks & rattles before they turn in big problems. I hope GM comes through and gives him a brand-new truck for his quite memeorable accomplishment.

Yeah, I think from the NPR story, which I happened to hear, that he has had to do a lot of the normal stuff to the truck. That having been said, prudent and consistent highway driving, near religious maintenance, and a manual transmission will contribute to a vehicle lasting a very long time. That, and as kevin's predicament indicates, a lot of luck. All the care, maintenance and caution in the world aren't going to save you if you get a lemon in the first place. I have known people with the same year, same model cars, one of which lasted forever, and the other which was nothing but trouble. Probably has something to do with the team on the assembly line or something.
Just curious, would "near religious maintenance" mean twice a year (Christmas & Easter)??
