From the free online dictionary the adjective provincial means “ Limited in perspective; narrow and self-centered.”
The above article today in the Athens Banner Herald by one of the lucky members of the Georgia
Board of Regents one William NeSmith advocates a “Brand” for Georgia. In other words, he suggests it is necessary for the State of Georgia to sell itself with advertising. Why would he advocate this?
Evidently because Georgia has a bad reputation which is difficult to overcome with facts, so he advocates advertising propaganda which might overcome the bad publicity Georgia deservedly has received over the years.
Georgia already has basically a brand. It is known as a “provincial” State, where the “good old boy system” runs the show. This has been its reputation for many decades. Provincial is defined above.
Consider the 19 member Board of Regents of which he is one of the members who graduated from UGa.
A full eleven members of the nineteen graduated or attended UGA or about 58%. With the exception only two, all the rest only attended State schools. Only 2/19 or about 18% of this important policy making body for higher education in Georgia attended schools outside of Georgia.
Moreover, the Chancellor of the University System of Georgia Hank Huckaby, who holds a soft job making for him over half a million dollars a year also only graduated from Georgia State University and Young Harris College as well as attended UGA, but no schools from anywhere else in the country.
Moreover, this body spent thousands of dollars on a so called “national search” for a Chancellor, but when the smoke cleared they claimed the most qualified person was right here in their back yard. In other words, they violated the federal employment laws with impunity and disregarded many much more qualified individuals with earned Ph.D. and other degrees from many more prestigious and more difficult institutions than any in Georgia, in order to provide a soft gift to a friend and crony locally.
When you combine this corrupt behavior at high levels of Georgia government, with some past unpleasant history, such as the rejection of students from UGA in the 1960’s solely due to the color of their skin, the horrible record of the former Governor Talmadge in the firing of Dean Lorenzo Moss, M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia in about 1934 because he refused to lower the standards to allow political friends and cronies to be admitted to that school, the blatant lie of former governor Sonny Perdue when he promised to allow Georgia citizens to vote on the selection of the State Flag, but then reneged on his promise and personally selected it himself just like the defacto dictator he was, and on and on and on, one quickly realizes that indeed Georgia already has a well recognized Brand which will likely follow it many decades into the future despite any propaganda seeking to change its image with a new adjective lying about its sordid history.
Georgia is a very beautiful State. Its people are, for the most part, honest, very intelligent and friendly and hard working. It is their government, however, which has betrayed its citizens, and sold them out from the days of slavery and discrimination against women, both groups being denied the right to vote for decades from centuries ago to today where only those who are arbitrarily excluded from the “Good Old Boy Club” are still the virtual slaves, while the Gold Old Boys still hold this potentially great State back in the stone age. This is all very shameful indeed. No new brand can overcome this sordid history. Actions speak louder than words.
Even the new UGA President Morehead was a provincial choice. Many other more qualified persons were available for likely half the cost, who had demonstrated high scholarship at top institutions and brought new ideas to a dying inbred institution.
