I own 12 horses and all of them are in excellent health.
If I want to buy a horse and the owner says I can't have my vet look it over before I buy,
I get in my car and leave no matter what the price is.

I think a lemon law is a good thing. I happen to be one of those horse owners who does not spend enough time schooling my horses. I have a gelding I would like to sell right now but, in good conscience I cannot sell him to anyone unless they have the patience of Job and all the time in the world to work with him. They also have to be an experienced horse person and good rider. He's not bad, just smart and quick. Learns fast and retains it. He just acts like he is scared of people places and things. I have tried all of the deconditioning tricks, strategies and moves I can. Sent him to a professional trainer who did an excellent job. He told me when I got him back after 30 days that he needed miles put on him. That's what I haven't had the time for. If I go out there once every 4 weeks he still retains the standing still to be mounted and flexion exercises. Got a good whoa on him too. Said all that to say If I sold him it would be with a written disclaimer.

I'm not in the horse trading/selling business for a living either. That's a good thing.

When I bought my horse... many, many years ago, he had a behavioral problem... it took some time and correction, but he learned.

What about the crooks that deliberately sell to get rid of a horse they know is not safe. We just bought a horse with a signed gurantee that was to cover the claim that she is broke to ride for anyone including kids. We bought the horses with my grandkids visiting for them to ride too. I trained horses for a some years, a while back. I bought the horse sight unseen based on the gurantee of the owner. The day after I got her home, she turned from a docile mare to rodeo in the pasture with both me and my husband. I believe the horse was drugged. And, to top it off she bites, cribs, and tears up fence. The woman who's name is on the guarantee refuses to take the horse or refund. She is a lemon and this person is a crook. Knowing horses I believe the horse was a brood mare and was recently broke to ride at 5 years old. If she is five. I am looking at her teeth and they look to be of an 8 or more horse. We will have the vet check that and have another professional ride her and film the bucking and biting. This we will have to do to go to court and get our money back. To top it off the woman had the ignorance to say that we somehow caused these bad habits in 4 days. Get real!! There should be lemon laws on horses to protect the innocent, especially kids. If this horse had hurt my kids we'd be doing more than going to court!!! You may want to conside that before you cheat someone!!! Not all people are tolerant of dishonesty, especially these days!!!

there should ne a horse lemon law to protect buyers i bought a horse at sale they said the horses are sound but sold as is when i got the hores home thenext day i saw he had rain rot i was told at aution the owners 5 yr old rode this horse it was hers and was told he had calcium on his knee.well i had a friend come and ride him for me befor i did because i'm disabealed. she got on him took him a few feet and said he's lame. so i called my vet and when he pulled in he was upset he saw how the horse was just by looking at him in the field well he examined him here it turns out he has crippleing arthritis and come winter he won't be able to even move and the other bad thing is these people help other people who rescue horse from slaughter but yet will sell a crippled horse to some one who is disabled. they say buyer beware which is bull when you buy a horse you should have 10 day's to get it vet checked and stop all these seller from ripping people off.they want me to look at another horse they got for me but my vet said not to get it because you don't now what might be wrong. i think they should have to give my money back because they sold a crippled horse

A friend of mine bought horse not long ago and within a week and a couple of days the she was thrown causing traumatic brain injury leading to her currently being in jail as a result of her head injuries. Today we find out that the horse has cancer and has had for some time. The people that sold them the horse said that the horse had her head caught in a fence some time ago and her ears were real sensitive since then. Beautiful paint mare, barrel racing horse for $500. The cancer is in her ears and has been there so long that the horse is near death. The people that sold them the horse will not return phone calls. They bought the horse with the understanding that she was a sound horse and anyone any age could ride her. Are there and legal liabilities?

I don't know if you are still on this forum - Did you get that mare from HGF?
