Let's recount, recommend, review and revisit

Recount, a movie about the horrors of the 2000 election results in our state, comes to HBO May 25.

If Shakespeare had a fog machine, he would have used it. Macbeth is meant to be full of ghosts, apparitions, witches, visions and blood, lots of blood. It's all in the script. Shakespeare was not shy about using whatever he had available to please the groundlings. The Globe reportedly burned down during a production of Henry VIII when a cannon shot off during the play caught a pile of straw on fire. I don't always like the way Orlando Shakes stages its productions (although they are often wonderful--last year's King Lear, for example) and they may have gone a little far with Macbeth, but I don't think they violated the spirit of this very violent and horrific tale.

This film, purporting to be an account of real events, is one of the most poorly, perhaps dishonestly, researched projects ever to hit the airwaves. The screenwriter has admitted that he gave the script in advance to the two principal figures, James Baker and Ron Klain, for "comments." He also waited until after the film had begun shooting to contact Warren Christopher and Bill Daley, two figures who were at the eye of the storm. I understand that Christopher wasn't even shown the script.
HBO should advertise this as facufiction or fictufaction.
