The Star beacon is a crummy little Ashtabula paper, but I have always subscribed to it, because I like local news. They will loose me as a subscriber for a stunt that they pulled this weekend.
They have locked the local forums from hundreds of posters. It is censorship and I am mad. There are many people who use those forums to chat about things going on in our community, as well as upcoming elections, and issues. The part that angers me the most, is that no one was using any profane language or anything. They have frozen the forums because they did not like the OPINIONS of some of the posters! I am mortified, and hope that their paper suffers tremendously from the authority driven stunt that they have pulled.

I have been a subscriber to the Star Beacon for years. I have (and still do) read the Star Beacon but am questioning whether I will renew my subscription. They shutdown the forums because someone was talking smack about someone they are sleeping with. If I am not mistaken, isn't the whole idea behind a news paper free speech and freedom of the press. What makes that any less harmful than citizens speaking their minds about certain government officials and local politics. I have seen people slandered in the Star Beacon yet it is still printed today.

Who in the world would try to oppress freedom of speech? Is Ashtabula run by a ruthless dictator? Someone call GW!!

I thought the webmaster was particularly arrogant with the following comment:
Please don't bother emailing me asking "why" or "when" because I won't respond anyway. I have been subscribing to the Star Beacon for a LONG time. I will not be renewing. When it comes up for renewal, I intend to tell them I am cancelling because of the rude, arrogant behavior they displayed on Sunday. |

I think we should get the e-mail addresses of the publisher and editors at the Star Beacon and e-mail this URL to them.

I just happened to get my bill to renew last week. It will be sent back, not with a check, but with a letter of cancellation that explains that their little stunt has cost them a subscriber. Did you read the editors story in Sundays paper? What an arrogant jerk.

They can't handle the truth! I hope they sell to someone who print ALL THE NEWS...not just their opinions.

I suggest we all stop buying this rag till they put the forum back and keep hands off. Censorship can work for us too.

Too bad we can't get the word to all the posters about this site. We could really give the star beacon the middle finger!

Did they publish an explanation in the paper? Or just the webmaster's little hissy fit on the forum itself.
Does anyone know what someone posted that caused them to have their childish little tantrum? Guess they aren't aware that USA Today and the News Herald are available for home delivery in this area. |

The week that they shut down the forums, they ran an article in Sundays paper saying that they were upset about a "list" bashing Ashtabula county.(you remember the "you know you are from Ashtabula" thread). The star beacon is now running a "list" of their own so that people can emphasize the positive in Ashtabula. Negative people need not respond. They are picking only the posts they agree with. It is such a joke. They have lost my business.

That's amazing. Every now and then they publish a libelous article about a real person. About a year ago they published an article about a woman who was a Kingsville institution for years. She was an operator at the Kingsville Telephone company for 30 years or more (she was a friend of my great grandmother). She passed away probably 20 years ago. The Star Beacon published a "feature" article about her based upon recollection of people who knew her - they essentially made her the object of ridicule. It was an indefensible, tasteless article. The woman is dead but she still has relatives in the area. I believe a nephew wrote a letter to the "Reekin' Beacon" taking them to task for ridiculing his late aunt. It truly is a newspaper written by rank amateurs.

I found the Ed Looman article. Here is a quote:
"I am just tired of constantly hearing negative thoughts about this area. It's depressing. There is tons and tons of positive stuff happening. Most folks, however, have their eyes open to just the negative. That is indeed unfortunate." First, he makes a grammatical error. It should read, "there ARE tons and tons of positive stuff happening." Second, he writes that "MOST FOLK" have their eyes open to just the negative. How does he know what MOST FOLKS are thinking? The are somewhere around 100,000 people living in Ashtabula County. The Star Beacon forums had perhaps a hundred participants. That is statistically insignificant. |
