I recently moved to Ashtabula, Ohio. I was drawn here by the inexpensive rent, nice parks, proximity to bigger cities, etc. I apparently chose the wrong area of the city. What section of Ashtabula is best for a family? Does anyone know what other cities in Northeast Ohio are nice for a family? I'm not looking forward to another move, but I definitely want my family in a nicer, safer area, something this part of town definitely is not.

The whole area is bad. Has been for a very long time. The people who run this area are all related or married in. Even the local press is related so the area has a lot of things that should be reported on swept under the carpet.
That way they can bring in people to exploit. If you have any money they will bring you down and siphon it away until you can not leave with a cent. They will create litigation or any number of situations a local think tank can come up with to get at your money. They also have their family members do crimes against people and they are never charged or have to face the consequences of their actions. They are in essence "above the law".
It is a shame you got sucked into a hole that others have done everything in their power to get out of.
I suggest moving to PA.

Thank you. I'm just so tired after the last move. Is Conneaut any better?

NO, Bunch of A-holes there too. Goes way back to a Trashtabula lawyer that gained a higher position in that area. For example. A certain fast food chain has owned a location out there plus another commercial building. The owner is related to the crook lawyer and has NEVER PAID TAXES on the land other than a vacant land lot. Even after bringing this up nothing has changed. They are a bunch of crooks. Yet I do not hear of the personal family attacks like in Trashtabula.
A better place to live is less than a ten minute drive and that is near Girard PA. It is also decent in Geauga County, Ohio. Before you settle again I strongly advise you to at least drive Rt20 from Conneaut to at least Erie Pa. Shop or browse a few of the stores and see how NORMAL the people over in PA conduct themselves. Then come back here and compare the difference. Your gut will let you know something is wrong. That is because wrongs are committed in this area and people have been done wrong. We also have to watch those related in deal in stolen large ticket items like vehicles, equipment, recreation vehicles, loads of stolen electronics, and drug dealing and we have no agency to call because the people are related in and we get to witness them get richer and richer while they continually cause harm to anybody that they have it in for. I even witnessed a SO deliver a load of boxes of brand new items to the garage of one of the people. Like I said there is no one to call because they all have a hand in the till. This is no where to settle a family and the area gets worse every year. The judges are all chicken shit except one and they look the other way even when a serious wrong has been committed to a family. If some thing happens to your family here the powers that be do not follow the written laws. They do as the mob pleases. Lawyers in Cleveland refuse to get involved in cases here because they have been harassed by the cops as they drive in to represent cases. They State Laws mean nothing here. They do as they please and that means justice is rare for wrongdoings. It really is a bad place because of how it has been run into the ground for over twenty years.
I advise moving to a normal area.

Last time when searching for a house, we were looking in Erie, PA and in NE Ohio. We just happened to find one here sooner, and the rent is a little cheaper although Erie's rent is pretty cheap, too. I am really regretting moving here now.

We lived in Erie previously for five years and loved it there. Friendly people, beautiful beaches and parks, a lot for kids to do, etc. We moved due to job loss, and then when we were ready to move back to the Erie area, we looked for houses in Erie and NE Ohio. We thought this would be a nice city and was still close enough to Erie. Any thoughts about Geneva, Madison or Jefferson Ohio?

Madison is strange.
Jefferson is quiet because the local police dept and the SO and Federal Jail are both in that town. It does get busy there during fair week in August.
Geneva has to deal with all the vacationers and drunks on a seasonal basis. Also migrant workers and many of them can't speak English.
The taxes here in this County are high and the new schools require long distance busing for kids. If you have kids you might want to consider what the routine for getting to and from school is. Also from what I hear the schools are a nightmare to drop or pick up kids. There is long waiting in a line of cars while they let one kid out of the building at a time and the driver and kid have to have identification matched and checked out. Every day , every time if they saw you every day for six months. If you forgot your card you can not have your kid, you would have another 45 minute to hour and a half or more wait in the line while they play games employing relatives and not trusting a high school kid knows his parents! This area gets more stupid by the day! They ruined the area by tearing down all the local neighborhood schools. Then over taxing the home owners that did not sell out in time. We get little for out tax dollars in this area.
