After a busy day in the house, my husband took the kids and went on an errand. I thought the house was eerily quiet. 5 minutes later I felt/heard the earthquake. I looked at the clock -it was 4:20pm. Completely forgot about it until the news came on tonight. We live ~1 mile east of Ashland.

We were attending a wedding in Doswell VA at Fork Episcopal Church and the small structure shook and slight sway. It sounded as if a cannon went off right outside the church or a Mack truck speeding by just missing the building. When it happened we both looked at each other as "what was that." Since we are out of towners, we figured it was just a normal occurence that happens daily, especially since it didn't seem to concern anyone. It happened during the middle of the ceremony so you couldn't really consult with anyone to find out what it was. It only lasted a few seconds. We came to find out later at the reception that it was an earthquake. We were very surprised to find that out and so glad that it was very mild.

Location 1 mile NW of Ashland Berry Farm. Heard a loud deep boom followed within seconds by 3 or 4 waves of motion. No mistaking it was a quake then.

Definitely felt it in Montpelier. Rt 54 and Rt 33(Staples Mill Road). Similar to what others have said. Sounded like Thunder in the distance and then a train rumbling underneath the house. Shook about 5-10 seconds. No damage, but, definitely felt.

Felt the shaking in Montpelier. Rt 54 and Rt 33(Staples Mill Road). Similar as others have described. Sounded like Thunder in the distance and then a freight train underneath the house, shaking it for about 5-10 seconds. No damages to speak of, but, definitely felt the earthquake here.

"shaking" - I thought it was my eyes!

Heard a boom and the house shook and the dog barked. My first thought was earthquake and then maybe explosion nearby. Had an earthquake here years ago and saw the ground outside buckle. This was more of a boom and a hard breif shake.
Talked to neighbor and she had talked to others. Some kids were frightened and ran for their houses.

The dogs had been acting weird all day. I was on the phone when it hit and I had to excuse myself to see what it was. Where I am in Beaverdam it was quite intense. I knew it was one of three things: earthquake, train derailment, or the guys blew something up at the barn...Felt i should be prepared for anything. My daughter and her boyfriend were up on a tree stand (here) at the time. It droppd 3 inches or more nad bent the supports...but they got a buck sortly afterwards...

Interesting we had one exactly one year and a day ago...centered in Rockville I think...

We initially thought it was a snag (dead tree) falling against our house. After a search revealed nothing, my husband concluded it must've been a heavy truck passing - I was skeptical. I grew up in Taiwan where earth tremors were common and frequent, but even with Hanover's recent quake (203) it was the last thing I'd have assumed.

We live in Beaverdam. I was inside but had the windows up. I heard the loud boom and it almost seemed as if something had hit or jarred the house!
It only lasted a few seconds. Now it know what it was!

Heard the rumbling, and the locks on the stall doors in the horse barns started rattling, and then we felt the entire bulding rumble. This lasted about 4 seconds and stopped.

I felt it. It shook the house and rattled windows. My first thought was that it was a shock wave from a supersonic aircraft. I'm at 37 deg 55.05 minutes N and 77 deg 37.35 minutes West.

That's an odd upgrade, especially since the magnitude is exponential and not linear as it climbs.

I was working at the time, and felt nothing. but then nothing less than 4.2 really register with me (old california person that I am). VA is on more solid bedrock too. Waves tend not to travel as far.

Hmm. interesting stuff.

We live off of Scotchtown Rd., 1 mile north of the house of Scotchtown. We thought something was crashing into our house. It was so loud. My husband went outside to see if anything had crashed. We thought a small aircraft may have crashed nearby.
