Hello from Upton. Now that the weather is cooperating, we invite you to drop by our gallery in the former Unitarian Church on the corner of Hwy 140 and Maple Ave in Upto for a show of works by Pierre Alechinsky.
In the Chinese calendar, the Year of the Snake comes every twelve years. For Pierre Alechinsky, a founding member of COBRA (an acronym for the cities that contributed members to the group, Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam), the Year of the Snake can be an auspicious one. In 1977, also the Year of the Snake, Alechinsky was awarded the first Andrew W. Mellon Prize for Painting and executed one of the prints we are featuring, also called “The Year of the Snake.” Spaightwood Galleries began in 1980, so we missed our 1977 observance, but by 1989, Alechinsky's Guggenheim retrospective (which had been traveling in Europe for almost two years) had finally come to its end, and Spaightwood presented our first major Alechinsky show and purchased a small oil painting on canvas by the artist. In 2001, we once again celebrated the Year of the Snake with an Alechinsky show, founded upon our acquisition of large numbers of the two pieces published in 1977 to celebrate his Mellon prize and augmented by many more recent etchings published by Galerie Lelong. Now, in 2013, as the Chinese Year of the Snake winds down to its close on January 31, we are presenting our largest Alechinsky show to date. In our Upton space, we can fit more Alechinsky works on the walls than ever before—97 on the walls (some of them quite large) and 21 more leaning against the bookshelves beneath the walls where the others are hanging— and we plan to luxuriate in lots of Alechinsky's favorite images: maps, altered documents, Central Park, snakes, volcanoes, gardens, dog-kings, smiling crocodiles and sea monsters, and people existing as best they can in a world that often seems to invite extreme emotional responses.(Sometimes you just want to scream!)

Our show will continue until Sunday, May 4 2014; we urge you not to miss the chance to see the work of one of the most important living artists of the past 65 years.

Please feel free to share this information with your colleagues, students, and friends.

We are located at the corner of Main St.(Highway 140) and Maple Ave in Upton. For those not familiar with Upton, it is the first exit off I-495 south of the Mass Pike (I-90). We are located in a deconsecrated Unitarian Church containing ourselves, over 9000 works of art (most of them on paper) from the late 15th century to the present. You can get a quick sense of it from our website, www.spaightwoodgalleries.com

We are open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m and other times by arrangement. You can reach us by phone at 800-809-3343.

Director of Spaightwood Galleries,

P.S. Our gallery tour for “The Year of the Snake” is live on our website. You can see it by clicking on the links at the top of almost every page of our website for "Gallery Tour 1" and "Gallery Tour 2.”

P.P.S. A tour of the more than 240 Alechinsky prints in the Museum of Modern Art's collection leads me to observe that over 35 of the works that they own can also be seen in our show. When they did their Alechinsky show in 1981, they only had 84 works on display; we have over 120.
