I have two children and I was worried they would develop the same dentalphobia I have always had. My older boy had already been traumatized by another local pediatric dentist so I was very careful with my younger son's first visits. At Dr. Mel's suggestion I brought him to one of their toddler programs (they call it WeeCare). He didn't do so well the first time but this didnt disturb Dr. Mel or his staff (a nice change). By the second visit, now age two, he did much better and couldn't wait to return (just like his brother that had needed lots of fillings (I let him fall asleep while nursing, my bad but I sure didn't repeat that error). We all look forward to returning. He is a helluva nice guy and an excellent detntist.

I used this website to help me find a children's dentist for my son and boy am I glad I did. The review I read was right, this guy is a gem. So helpful and patient. You can tell he truly loves kids. My son needed four teeth removed for his braces. After having one removed by a different local specialist he swore he was never going back. Dr. Mel had to literally talk my son out of the car in the parking lot to get him to go inside. Dr. Ehrlich had him come back twice so that he could become more comfortable. All he did was talk and review things...at a very minimal charge. Devon has since had the teeth removed and has no problem returning for whatever else Dr. Mel tells us he needs. Complete trust, very rare for my son. I just wish he would treat adults. Truly the best around

I'm glad you both have good experiences with that office.

I, unfortunately, did not. Almost every time I took my child for a cleaning, something else needed to be done. It got very expensive and after many years of this I felt something was wrong. So when I was told that she, yet again needed more fillings and some other things done, I decided to get a second opinion, TWO in fact, and both Dentists we saw said there were no cavities and nothing else was needed. I believe, and this is my opinion through my experience only, that things were done over the years that didn't need to be, or maybe weren't done and I was charged for them anyway.

Just like with an auto mechanic, unless you know everything about cars, you are at the mercy of the expert.

Please, for all parents, just be aware and keep informed. Get second opinions if you're just not sure.

WOW! I'm reading a post here a week after my daughter saw Dr. Mel. I was referred to him by my general dentist that had been seeing my children for five or so years. My dentist told me that my daughter needed four cavities filled. Dr. Ehrlich was able to explain that two of these teeth would be falling out soon and would not need care, and that one other cavities could be treated with some sort of floride varnish developed in Europe. Saved me hundreds of dollars...shocked to hear you had different experience. Maybe your kid just had lots of cavities. Dr. Mel now sees my twins in his baby program...free of charge. This guy is awesome. I totally trust him with my children...I just wish he'd see adults.

I have been taking my son (almost 15 now) to Dr. Mel since he was 2 - the local pediatric dentist was so creepy & wanted to do a bunch of unnecessary work. I travel amost an hour to get there and it is always worth the trip. We've never been steered wrong! He's truly a gem

A Mother's instincts are usually right!
I instantly had a funny feeling and I felt like I was being pushed to do work that was not necessary (my second opinion verified it was unnecessary)
"Dr. Mel" was nice enough but I had that used car salesman feeling is the best way I can describe it.
At one point, I was "offered" to knock my 5 year old out and put him in the Hospital so "All the work" could be done at once! That is pretty EXTREME if you ask me.
Thank God I did not agree to it!
If you ask me, he chooses the most Expensive work and options.
He then suggested a Spacer and Crown for my 5 year old! Are you kidding me!?!?
The cost is OUTRAGEOUS!! I paid over $300 out of pocket plus they got another $300 from my insurance.(this was for 1 procedure) I didn't pay close to this for same procedure with another dentist on my other child.
I think "Dr. Mel" is geared more towards helping kids with real fear of dentists and Special Needs. And he TAKES ADVANTAGE of the fact that those parents don't have many choices or dentist that can treat them!
Just BEWARE and trust your instincts!!!
I would NOT recommend this Dentist!!
NEVER GO BACK

I wish I reported this earlier. I WOULD NEVER EVER USE Dr. Mel Ehrlich. I brought my daughter in for her first dentist appointment at 3 years old. They told me I could not go in with her, I need to wait in the waiting area. They told me the first visit is usually short and quick. I waited for a half hour, then asked what was taking so long. An assistant came over to me 45 minuntes into the appointment and said my daughter was not cooperating so it took longer than the normal first visit. She asked me to go the the side office door to pick up my daughter so she would not walk through the main waiting room where the other kids could see her. When I went out the hall and to the "side door" I found my daughter with swollen eyes, broken blood vessels all around her eyes from crying so hard for a long period. I asked what happened to her and was told Dr. Mel made her sit in a room by herself until she would stop crying and cooperate so he could look at her teeth !! I was in absolute shock!! This man should NOT be practicing or working with children. He does NOT have the patience for children. He is VERY cold and arrogant. My daughter is now petrified of the dentist. She went into her appointment happy and very willing. She came out terrified !

So I read these reviews after my daughter's visit. Kinda confused how could be such differences in people's opinions...go figure. My daughter had just the opposite experience of some. She showed up crying and left smiling. And she did have a crown and a space maintainer. Dr. Mel was awesome explaining to me the reason for each and how the care he suggested would benefit her long term and possibly save me money. I have an uncle that teaches at a dental school and he reviewed all we had discussed and agreed that it was perfect care. Dentistry can be expensive but my daughter's smile is definatly worht it. I called around..his fees are about average and the special one-on-one care he and his staff provided was worth it at almost any cost. I wouldn't hesitate about going back and trust him completely.

I was repulsed by Dr Mel. He insisted he bring my 3 year old in the exam room alone. She was visibly upset and the whole interaction with him was just weird. He said he wouldn't proceed with the cleaning because I was not allowed with her. She just turned 3 and Dr Mel is a stranger in my book. I think that fact he doesn't allow parents to accompany their child is disturbing. After talking with a lot of parents not one said their child goes into the dentist exam room alone. Do you let your 3 year old go in the pediatricians office alone? I sure as hell don't and this is no different.

After reading this post I am truly disturbed as a mother. I would NEVER allow my children in a room alone w/ any doctor I did not have an established relationship with. Even if I knew this doctor for some time I would still not allow him/her to be alone w/ my child. Especially 3 years old, they are so helpless!!!!! This doctor seems like a super creep to me, I worked at a dentist office and never was it required that the parent not accompany the child. In fact it was ENCOURAGED so that the child was at ease with their parent in the room. Keep your children away from him

We let our son be alone with this strange man and he came out in fear. Dr mel had told him that he was a baby and to stop crying. We cannot forgive ourselves for being so naive. Our current pediatric dentist encourages parent participation. We believe that Dr. Mel has some serious character defects that need to be addressed.

ask mel why he likes to see children without their parents.. most pediatric dentists would ask the same question.. could he be hiding something .. open your mind and see the possibility..if we worry, why can't you?

I had him when I was young. I am 15 now. But I must say, he was a creepy guy. He was also a very rough, aggressive dentist. I never liked going there, and the fact that he would never allow parents to come in to make their kids feel comfortable was quite odd. He said I had 9 cavities and that I had to get them drilled (I always brush). We then went to visit a different dentist, and he found no cavities. This guy is a scammer, and a complete creep.

Also, the child porn thing. I've never seen such an ignorant judge in my life. They are still letting him work with children. Its just WRONG.

Think about it, people. If you still trust Dr. Mel when he was caught with Child Porn, and never let's you in with your kid. Isn't that sort of odd? I think so..
