I agree, I have had some of my most hurtiful experiences at church. Now everyone will jump in and say christians are just human.....but you go to church seeking comfort from the harsh outside world and then are blind sided by the meaness of fellow church goers. If you can't feel safe at church, then where?????
You are right, church should be a place where you feel safe. Throughout my life, I have attended and visit several churches in the Ashland area. I have, unfortunately, had hurtful remarks made to me also at times. I have suffered through unkind stares and rudeness at times while attending church. While I am not going to judge those various churches - as that is not for me to do, several people in attendance made certain I was uncomfortable. I have attended Life Song Church now for the past couple of years. Not one time have I been treated coldly, been snubbed or insulted. Nor have I had anyone try to force anything on me. I have listened to the pastor state many times that one of their core values is for everyone "It's not all about me" it's about reaching the lost, those that have quit going to church (for many of the reasons stated on this thread), and those that have never gone to church. Jesus came to earth to teach us the ways of God. We are to try to model are life after Jesus. He died on the cross and rose again for everyone. Jesus conquered death, hell, and the grave so we can have eternal life. If we are truly sorry for our sins (and we all have sinned) and ask Jesus to forgive us and save us, He will. Then we have eternal security that we will spend eternity with him and our loved ones that have died before us if they were saved. Please don't let people keep you out of Church. The Bible teaches that people will fail you - instead please look to God for your strength and pray to do His will. People unfortunately will always hurt other people in some way or another. It doesn't make it right and it sure isn't Christian of them, but when you quit going to church and stop living for God then Satan wins a battle. And if you listen to the news or even drive through Ashland and witness the drugs and prostitution Satan is winning battles. But while Satan may win some battles, he will not win the war. The Bible tells us that at the very end of time Satan will be bound and cast into hell for eternity. But if we don't except Jesus Christ as our personal savior, we will also be cast into hell for eternity when we die. And in hell there are no reunions with loved ones - there is only torment forever and ever. I pray that God will lead you to the church He wants you to serve in. Everyone is welcome at Life Song Church. Sunday services are at 11:00 AM at the Paramount. It is a Bible believing church. You are welcome to come as you are - no one is treated differently if they wear dress clothes or jeans or shorts or have tatoos or piercings - they want everyone to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

I recall an incident where I encountered a deacon of a, certain, local Baptist church in a bar on Saturday night.

Even if the churches aren't full of snobs, they are overflowing with hypocrisy.

I agree, Unity Baptist is full of snobs. It is a joke. Avoid it at all cost.

Find a church that you personally feel comfortable attending. You should never be made to feel 'put off' by anyone. Everyone should be attending to worship the Lord and to study the Bible. I'm sorry that anyone is treated rudely at any church. I, myself go to a small Baptist church and go out of my way to welcome any new comer to our church. We even had a couple that were obviously 'on something' but we extended our Christian hospitality to them & hope that some of the fellowship and scripture taught will allow them to understand that they needed more than 'this stuff' in their lives.
Don't give up on finding a good church.

this whole topic is such a shame. God is love. If everyone would try to live a life of Love, shameful post like these and many others would never be. lets all look at our own lives before we go judging all those around us. no-one is perfect or without sin. Christ died for us while we were still sinners...how about we all show love like this.

I recently attended Unity Baptist Church with my husband. We did not dress up and wore jeans and polo type shirts. No one offered to let us set with them and if looks could kill we would both be dead. It was obvious that we were not wanted there. We are good clean people without tattoos or piercings (not that either would make one unclean or bad). We could have dressed up to fit in better, but we are used to going to a church where people come as they are. We will not go back to that church.
Why didn't you fill out a visitors card or say something to the pastor? If it was that impressing on you, you should contact the pastor. If it's true what you say, he should know.

Yes each individual needs to attend a church where they feel welcome. However I have attended Unity for many services dressed as you describe you did and have never felt unwelcomed. Dressed to someone else's expectations is not a requirement of salvation. Hopefully when we experience this, we do as God has set forth and take the problem to the people involved.

This church has changed so much from the way it was back in the 1980's that I doubt most people would or even could recognize it. It used to be full of people. It has very few people anymore. So a person would just have to try it for themselves and if they didn't like it, then find another church.

unity is just a country club for the holier than thou crowd...they have literally refused simple requests from those in need of help, such as a blanket for a child...if a church is not a church, but a country club, they need to change their sign
