I am looking for a church that has more than just elderly white people in it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd like it to have a good children's church too. I just would rather go somewhere where my son is not the only one who's black, ya know?

Old Orchard. They're definitely very caring for their children and teens, too, very helpful. Pretty open and accepting. There aren't a ton of non-white people, but there are a few, and no one cares. They're very accepting. We get all kinds there, and they're still very loving and godly- piercing, crazy hair, different races- they don't care. They're wonderful and some of the best people I've met. Never passed judgment on me. They have dinner at 5 on Wednesdays, and church itself starts around 6.

Why do you even care about the color of other kids. Do you think your child can't learn about Jesus with white kids? If your picking a church because of the ratio of black and white kids your missing it! Spend some time in prayer about it. God will let you know where to go. Topix isn't going to give you the answer. Everyone from every faith will tell you to come to thier church. Determine your faith and go from there. If your just looking for a black church, then go to Christ temple in Ashland. There's good people there.

Okay you are obviously the one missing it. First of all i never said that would be the only reason i would go somewhere. Second, i am white so dont try to make it out to be like i think white ppl are the devil or something. I am just trying to find a place where my family fits in and can be comfortable so we can concentrate on worshiping the Lord instead of dodging the nasty looks that closed minded ppl want to give us. Please dont assume that you have any clue about what is best for me and mine. I didnt get on topix to ask someone else to choose for me, i simply asked for suggestions so i know where to start and i can find a place i can really WANT to go to every sunday and wednesday. thank you to those of you who have made suggestions, i appreciate your help. there are so many different types of churches around here it is hard to know where to begin so thanks!

You mentioned three things in your post about a church. Two of the three are about color. So how did I miss it? The only other thing you mentioned was about childrens church. All I said was determine your faith and pray about it. If you are still unsure about your faith then you should have said that. But you didn't. Looks like the only thing that that matters to you is being somewhere around young black people. You said nothing about worshiping God in your op. I'm just saying. Read your op and tell me again how I've missed it. Good luck.

I am not going to keep arguing with you, it is nonsense. I know my faith, I know my intentions, and that is all that really matters anyway. I am still looking for suggestions. i plan on going to the church i am at every sunday and trying out new ones every wednesday until i find the church for me. i am sorry if it offends you that denomination isnt a big issue for me, but its just not, never has been.

Good I'm not arguing with you. Since most denominations are different, I assumed you would want to be around others with like faith You only mentioned being around those of like color. I can see you are more interested in a social club than church. I hope you can find a place where you and your family can fit in and learn more about whatever it is you believe in. I just hope you keep God first and color last.

I agree that denomination should not be an issue. I also agree that your family situation may be offensive to some (although not rightfully so) and that you would not want to be around such judgmental minds while at church. Contrary to the other poster, I see no reason why you should have to mention faith in your original post. You stated that you were looking for a church. It would seem silly to say that you were looking for a church where you can worship, pray, etc. That seems redundant. Implicit in your original post is that you were looking for a place where you can do those things...the extras (information about your family) were given so that others could provide enough information to help others provide suggestions. Stating that in addition to a church, you are looking to find a place to worship would be pointless -- that does not provide any further information to someone in suggesting churches to you. Therefore, I understand why you omitted such information. If I were you, I would check out some of the larger churches in the area. I am not saying that they necessarily will be the best fit, but they tend to have larger children's programs and more diversity in congregation. Of course, worship styles differ, but it is best to experience those in person before deciding.

For many, denomination is not important. What is most important is the dynamic of the congregation and how comfortable the person feels there. Churches of the same denomination can vary widely -- and churches of different denominations can often be more similar than some from the same denomination. It all depends on the makeup and dynamic of the congregation. I tried churches from several different demoninations before choosing mine. I was raised in a Baptist church, but I do not attend one now because of the choices around here I felt more comfortable and able to express my faith at a church of a different denomination. I think it is error to be so set on one denomination and choose a church based solely on that. Just because one takes into account other factors (family situation, programs, etc.) does not mean that he/she are more interested in the social aspect than in his/her faith -- all it means is that he/she is looking for a place where he/she feels most comfortable so that it will be easier to worship. I think if most people thought about it, they would not agree with all teachings/principles of a single denomination and only say they are of a certain denomination because they are close-minded and were raised that way and/or have never thought about it. Also, to your comment about putting God first and color last, that is exactly what she wants to do. However, for many churches in the area, that will not be possible. Regardless of whether you want to admit it, there are many in this area who believe that inter-racial relationships are sins. Therefore, if she attends a church where people of that mindset attend, the focus will be on color instead of her faith. Her concern is a legitimate one.

Also, what is so wrong with looking for a social network within a church? It would be a good thing to socialize with those with whom one worships. It can provide great support and faith-building opportunities. Wow, you are really narrow-minded.

I myself am non- denominational. So I see what you are saying to a certain extent. But on the other hand saying church in general means alot of different things. Some believe Jesus is the son of God, some believe he is just a man. Some handle snakes, speak in tounges, worship Mary. Those are all totally different. That was all I was refering to about the faith thing. Also I get what you are saying about the color thing, but it's hard for me to wrap my head around. I just see man or woman not color. But I guess there are still stupid people in this area who don't. I apologize for not takin that into account. I really do hope you find what is the best for you and your family!

Try out Oakland avenue Baptist church. They're really wonderful and the pastor is a very nice man. Actually, everyone there is really nice. Just a suggestion though.
