I'm in the neighborhood and can tell you what happened. A dog that is normally enclosed in a fenced in yard somehow got out of it's owners yard and wandered into the owners next door neighbor's yard. The neighbor was pulling into his driveway and saw the dog in his yard. The neighbor got out of his truck walked into his house grabbed a pistol, came back out and shot the dog in the head/neck area. The dog didn't survive.

I hope it was a pit bull, and the bullet passed through it, and hit another pit bull...

This was our dog. It was a chocolate lab who was a part of our family and our children's best friend.

All dogs are great. All living things are, unless they're tainted. I wish that on no dog. I'm so sorry for you and your family.

What was his reason for shooting the dog? Was it a mean lab? Is he a bad neighbor? There is more to the story that I'd like to hear.

So sorry for family's loss. I use to have a lab. They are so loyal and well mannered. What kind of person kills a harmless pet? Your neighbor is a full blown nut job. I hope he gets locked up and gang raped for a long time.

All labs are NOT well mannered. My buddy had one that was great to him but mean to everyone else. Had to have him put down before he hurt someone. I'd really love to hear the truth about why he shot the dog. I'm not saying yours is one but some dogs do need shot. If there was a dog at my house that I thought could hurt my kids, I'd have no problem pulling my .38 and killing it.

Take him to small claims court. If he had time to go into the house an come back an shoot him he was not in danger. It won't bring fido back but will hold the man responsible for his actions. I haven't seen a mean chocolate lab.. Doesn't mean there not out there. Sorry for your loss.

I am absolutely sickened by this! This man is a nut! It was not an aggressive dog it was a chocolate lab. A child's pet! I can't imagine having to live next to this asshole! Have you called the police? Just wondered what they said. I'm sorry for your loss.

Our two labs Miles and Sadie were in our fenced in backyard Monday when Sadie started barking. I went to let her in as always so that her barking doesnt bother our neighbors and let Miles stay out because he loved to lay out on our deck or out underneath the pine tree and relax. He's a quiet dog and rarely barks or makes noise. Someone had opened up our gate without us knowing and Miles got out. He went next door into our neighbors yard because there were people working. He was no threatening anyone in any way he just loved people. Now I understand that dogs can be aggressive even labs but this dog was not. Our neighbor whose name is Fred Swan (think Merrell Lynch van parked on Winchester Avenue) came home and said he felt SO threatened by Miles that he got out of his truck, passed Miles, walked into his home, picked up a pistol, walked back out of his home and shot him. I did not hear the gun shot but did hear Miles yelping. I ran into my backyard to find him very seriously hurt. At this time, I was still unaware of what happened. All I knew was he was in serious condition. We went to pull the car around back to get Miles to the vet and while I was pulling around I saw Fred outside. I was a mess and begged him to please tell me if he saw anything or had any idea what could have happened. With a SICK SICK smirk on his face he said, "yeah, I shot your dog." I don't remember what else he said to me because my first priority was to try to save Miles. Miles only made it about thirty minutes after we got to the vet. I will never forget the look of Miles and him still wagging his tail at me while he was dying. I will also never forget the smirk on Fred's face when he told me what he did. Miles did not deserve this. My three year old did not deserve to see Miles in that condition. NO ONE deserves this. Nothing will bring our Bubby back. All that I can ask is that anyone who knows anyone will make some calls. Call your local animal group, call city commisioners or the mayor. The case is still open with the APD and we're not sure how they're going to proceed with our neighbor but from what I've heard so far they can only charge him with discharging a firearm within the city limit which is only a misdemeanor. We have two small children and are scared to even walk out the door for our safety. People that do these things should be held accountable whether it's a dog or a human. It's not safe to have someone like this in our neighbor. That bullet could have very easily passed through Miles and a person or child. We need to make people aware that this is not acceptable. According to our lawyer the best thing we can do at this point is a call a city commissioner and let them know how you feel. This is far from over and we are going to be doing everything we can to make sure something like this can't happen again. If anyone has any numbers or suggestions please let us know.

If your story is true then he is a sick man. If for some reason he did feel threatened then he has every right to protect himself and his property. I'm not ready to hang the man for what he did just yet. I'm truly sorry for your loss tho. And again if it was a pit bull I'd give the man a key to the city.

Sorry for your loss i love my dogs just as if they where my kids if someone hurt them i would go ballistic and go for there throats. If i where you i would get a lawyer and sew him in civil court. No way someone fears a dog and walks past them if he was scared he would not have got out of his vehicle. The man was just being a @sshat plain and simple and as we say in the country needs tuned up drastically.

I don't believe this story. Why not give the name of person who shot the dog and where it was.Street South Ashland is pretty big. You are starting trouble. Probably related to the pther post about a family not taking care of the dog tied up on Sellar St. Be a man or woman tell it all.REPORT THEM!
