Has anyone found any pics of the mound on Marathon land they still won't give me permission. If you get on google earth you can see it starts by the radio tower. I stoped by the house at the start of the tower road and the female that answered the door said she had never herd of it. I got some info at the ashland library. I just want to see the thing. Off us23 they have more no tress. signs than I have ever seen. [email protected]

I dont know for sure if I can get access or not but I am going to try my best to get up there this summer! I honestly do know someone that has been up there in the last few years and he said there wasnt much of it left to see; but I am like you I want to see it for myself. I have read so much stuff about it on the internet, alot of different sites say different stuff but I am really thinking it doesnt start at the tower (I could be wrong tho). If I get any new info I will post I promise you do the same ok?

This is the head it stretches over 900' to the SE.
It covers the hill from the west bound Catlettsburg off ramp I64 almost to the AOI parking lot

Looks fine on Google Earth

The last time I saw the serpent mounds was bout 20 some years ago & they had trees growing up through the rocks. But they did exist, I haven't heard of anybody removing them, there a historical landmark & I don't believe they could get permission 2 deface them. But I would love to go with you, I know there's another way 2 get up there.

I was there back in the late seventies. Standing on the head looking down at 64/23 intersection, and watching them build the coal con plant to the left.

To be precise about how to view this mound site, copy the coordinates below into the Google Earth search bar. Using imagery data dated 4/13/2001.
The last time I was there was 1979, this is how I went.
Start at the dirt road at
38 22' 46.31" N 82 36 43.43 W
This is West out KY Rt3 3/10 mile from US Rt23
Go South up the hill 600 feet curving East up this road to the Kentucky Power Company tower at:
38 22' 43.36" N 82 36' 38.46" W
Power lines and stone mound stretch over 800 feet South East toward the winter sunrise, to the edge of the hill. Another 300 feet of the tail curves back and forth going down the hill, it has been destroyed by oil pipeline construction. The AOI Marathon pipeline from Western Kentucky ends just across US23. You can see how the pipeline right of way disfigures the tail from Google Earth.
Listed below are the coordinates quoted so far in this thread. Which of these places look like a ("600'") snake?
38 22' 17.80" N 82 37'06.12" W
38 25'33.21"N, 82 36'42.38"W
38 22' 41.94" N 82 36'37.73"W
3820'57.36" N 8236'15.27" W
3820'57.58"N 8236'10.18"W
Bad information can be use to protect progress, at the cost of history.
