Playing games on the computer? Highly unlikely...considering our computers won't even access stuff like that online. If you had a clue of the amount of computer work they must be done every shift you would know why the nurses are on the computers constantly. It's hours worth of charting. And, nurses are assigned patient's....they don't just randomly care for whoever is on the floor. The charge nurse is at the desk all day, on the computer, on the phone. That is their job. And, sorry if there is chit chat about everyday life going on in the mix. People have no clue what nurses have to do besides running family members cups of ice on command.
Im not talking about ice!!!! I was the one getting her ice, cleaning her up, adjusting her bed, anything to assist. Im talking about dr ordered medicine, open wound care, etc. While other nurses came in chatting about what was on television, what soaps they preferred, asking for recaps on shows. Don't try to pretend, I WAS THERE!!! And my mother gets mrsa in the process. Even the dr said he didn't know why the nurses needed an "order" to clean a feeding tube incision!! Incompetence all the way. And yes, I am angry - she didn't need to suffer as much as she did at the hands of the staff at KDMC

I know exactly what you are saying! They just about killed my Mom over there a couple of months ago! We had a nightmare experience there. I've already told my family..."If something happens to me, I better not wake up at Kings Daughters!"

It's not the nurses fault that KDMC was double dipping, but yet we are the ones paying for it and our patients are the ones who will suffer.

Why is it so many seem so elated to see people lose their jobs??? How does a large number of people losing their jobs make things better for the tri-state area?? Those very people you are loving to hate make up the people that shop at the mall and keep those little shops open. They buy gas to get to work on, go to the local grocery store (even walmart) and they spend hard earned money on things they need and want in local and tri-state area businesses. You want to know what happens next? They apply for unemployment, maybe they can't find another job and end up losing their home or vehicles. What about their children??? Anyone think of them?? What do you think could happen next? Welfare. So, now you have your wish. You have a perfectly capable person sitting on welfare that you (if you have a job that is) are supporting. Now who has the last laugh? Grow up. People losing their jobs is NOT FUNNY! They have bills, and families to support just like everyone else. If they didn't they wouldn't work. People ought to be reaching out to these people and supporting them and giving them a shoulder to lean on instead of griping at them and saying they deserved what they got.

Does the hospital have issues? YES! Are there people working there that don't seem like they have enough common sense to get out of the rain? YES! Should you LUMP everyone into that category just because they work in a particular place? NO! I could say that everyone that works at McDonalds is a low life uneducated hick. That wouldn't be true though would it? I don't believe it is. I think everyone has different things they are meant to do in this life. It's about how you handle the path you are meant to take. Having said that, I will say that there are people that should not be nurses. Some work there, some work at Cabell, some at St. Mary's. Its an epidemic. It's everywhere, not just at this hospital. Try not to put down everyone at the hospital just because they are part of the "machine". The greater percentage of people that work there really care about their patients and do everything they can to help them. Instead of words of hate, lets hear someone say they are going to pray for them. I will pray for them.

It's that kind of company behavior that the unions were designed for. I've been told by nurses that they wanted to join the union but were afraid they would lose their jobs if the company found out that the nurses were joining before it became official. THAT IS ILLEGAL. Even with an at will employer. Research it ! Even the threat of ANY type of retaliation is illegal.
And to my union brothers and sisters that work there. Remember the union is only as strong as it's members. It's take A LOT more than just the elected officials. BUT, you have to take pride in your job as well. Someone mentioned that $10 hr was the rate for housekeeping and that it wasn't bad. I agree,$10 isn't bad. Could it be better, yes. It could be worse too. But regardless of the pay, when negotiations come, the company needs to know that how well you do your job is worth what you're asking them to pay. Just because you're union doesn't mean you don't have to work hard. It means you get better pay and benefits and job security to do the hard work. It's not a free pass by any means. And when it gets looked at that way, the union loses credibility. And you lose the respect of your employer( if there was any ) but most importantly your co-workers.
SEIU 1199 is a POS union!! They will never help the employees at KDMC! I was a "union agitator" at River Valley Health System/Lawrence County General Hospital in Ironton and I got fired for trying to initiate a union. SEIU 1199 was that union! Every time we met our quota to vote, they would raise the quota! They were bought off and our union rep disappeared leaving me and a group of us to suffer and be fired! Of course they used other reasons but it was all of us that tried to get the union in. We told everyone that management was embezzling money but some were against us! 3 years later the hospital shut down because there was no more money BUT all of management had received property and other exclusive things bought with hospital money! SEIU 1199 will NOT help the employees at KDMC! Did they help after the last layoff??

I was not a part of the layoffs but i am a former employee of kdmc... Trust me when i say, the patients are definately the ones to pay the price... The rooms are not cleaned as they should be, they dont get the care from the nurses they need or deserve and not because the staff is not capable but because they are so understaffed. Nurses duties are compiling, they have less help, a greater patient load, and less support... Noone to support them or their needs to be able to actually be the nurse they were trained or expected to be... The physicians are kdmc employees and know they will never see u again so u dont get the attention u wld receive from ur regular family dr... It is sad that even when i was a nurse there, i took mu family members to another facility. My heart goes out to those who lost their jobs but even moreso to those patients who need care and put their trust and lives in the hands of kdmc.

This is a prime example why the hospital is in the shape it's in. We're paying $15 an hour for someone to cook or mop the floors!?! That's crazy housekeeping/kitchen should be a minimum wage job....period. There are nurses who don't make much more than $15 an hour and they have people's lives in their hands not mops or spatulas.
Your stupid one nurses make way more than that at least RN's. I'm sorry but 15 dollars isn't enough to do the jobs they do!!!

I did not get laid off, and I am saddened by the layoffs, I lost a lot of people I won't see again, be able to share daily thoughts and family stories with, and I will miss their smiles and support, but anyone who watches any TV knows this country is in trouble, and it just finally trikled down to us in our community. More will surley folllow, it is not the fault of Fred Jackson he is small in the big picture. Look at this nations economy, did you think this was not going to happen? Look at AK steel, and other downsizing in the tri-state. I think people think they can just go on living how they always have and its just not true, look at the cost of food, housing and fast food for your answer. It has been a sad day for KDMC just like thousands of other organization around the country

Seriously? The economy finally trickled down to KDMC? Sorry, that was the same excuse used last time ( 2 years ago ) so take your BS somewhere else. Getting caught is what went wrong with KDMC this time. Plain and simple.

Just so you know drs will say anything to keep you from seuing them. In order for a nurse to do almost anything they have to have an order. Even for over the counter meds like Tylenol. We have to have an order to do wound care or it's our license. That's not just our job that's our career. So next time you see this dr ask him why he is a dumbass and didn't write the order for wound care. And if it is so easy for you to say that the wound needed cleaned then why didn't you do it, you had nothing to lose. I'm not saying that you should have had to clean a wound but you need to shift your blame to the dr who didn't order the wound care.
