Well Lexington is rough with the amount of ambulance traffic between KDMT, MTS, BCEMS, ECEMS, CCEMS, etc. KDMC is a major hub hosptial supporting Greenup, Boyd, Carter, Elliot, Mostly Lawrence co KY, Lawrence Co Oh, Wayne & Cabell Co wv. And on off days they are the trauma ward for the region. So Lexington ave is not the best idea. If your looking for a nicer place, The center of blackburn ave is fairly nice, The fringe areas of it, not so much but they are still adequate. Theres the areas of Old Ashland(between lexington and Blackburn) that are downright beautiful if you can afford it

Problem areas start in and around lexington & 39th street around Jrs food mart BP. Or off winchester/greenup where the crack apartments are like Vinson. But really as far as towns go, none of these places are really that bad. Crime is generally nominal around town compared to other places and its not really common to see violent crimes like home invasions, theft, murder, etc around Ashland. Some, but its certainly not as common as say just over the state line in Mid town huntington, or anything like an actual metropolitan area.

The town is laid out efficiently, You have a damned good pawn shop in Tri State that if your looking to buy is better than most first run retail stores., though some people will bitch about anything. Solid independent school system with Paul Blazer (or Russell if you want to go to the Greenup county suburbs of ashland like Russell or Flatwoods)

Only real problems with the town is Being in the Ohio Chemical valley, the summers get hot way too soon, and due to the lack of trees and a water system, it not only gets brutally hot in the summer its like walking through a sauna in mid july the air is so thick with humidity. Then there is wal-marts dominance. Excessive state and local taxes. Higher utility costs, The inordinant amount of homes dependent on gas, and the fact that cops will pull you over for some seriously bogus claims like "a dirty license plate" to justify an unwarranted stop. Past that, its about as good of a place to live as youll find in Kentucky.

There are better places than ashland in kentucky to live.[/QUOTE] In this area of Kentucky, Ashland is the best place to live. Westwood, Russell, Flatwoods ( really all of Greenup County is awful), no full staffed police, volunteer fire department, just to name of few. In this small area Ashland has a hospital with branches all over all area, Ashland has 2 large parks and many smaller ones, we have plenty of stores and eateries, Ashland has a preforming art center a community college, bus and train terminals, a ymca, ywca (which maintains the Flatwoods city pool). Ashland has a full police department (with more than 3 police cars), and 3 fire departments ( not volunteers), Ashland has a river dock, and yearly Ashland has special avents in the park, at the river, and on winchester avenue,.

There may well be. I never suggested that there werent. I said.

"its about as good of a place to live as youll find in Kentucky. "

Meaning you wont find much better. Some places might have certain advantages, but they will also have disadvantages that ashland does not have. Ashland is a good town as far as Kentucky goes. Small enough to feel like home, Large enough to have convenient amenities.

Again the only real problem is the Ashland Oil refinery and AK steel pumping so much pollution into the air and water that on certain days there is a rust colored smog surrounding the area seen from overhead.
