Does anyone know anything about local teams this year? Season is right around the corner.

Boys or girls? Girls I figure it's Ashland and East Carter at the top. Boys it's hard to tell. Probably have to go with Rowan County and Boyd County. I haven't seen a schedule out of Boyd County yet. That will tell the tale for them. If they toughen up their schedule, they have a shot at the region. If not, they won't make it out of district. Russell always improves greatly toward the end of the season, so they are right here too.

I've watched alot of games with my kids through the years. This is the first year that I don't have a child playing. But to me it looks like Boyd has a lot of strenth and their seniors are looking pretty good. They also have a few juniors that have improved over the years as well. If they play a good strong schedule my vote is for Boyd.

I like soccer topics. They seem to be fun. As for the high school area teams, the only thing I know about the girls side is East Carter is strong. Boyd has a new coach, so we'll see. On the boys side, you will have your regulars, Russell,Rowan, and Ashland strong as usual. The wild card is Boyd County. Probably the most skilled team in the region, but I agree. The soft schedule was their achilles heel come post season play last year. I hear that is changing this year, so I guess we'll see about that too. They have a group of seniors that I think might be the most talented the region has seen in a while, and they have played together for years,a few of them year round I think??? Plus a few really good juniors. Still, Russell and Ashland seem to always be ready come tournament time. Should be a fun season to watch!

One more thing. Soccer doesn't get the attention the other sports do, but in my opinion, you have some of the best athletes in the region playing it. I like all sports, i just wish soccer was appreciated a little bit more. There are kids in this area that have played, and been good at other sports, that have chosen to play soccer year round. It shows. This sport should be appreciated like others.

I'm curious. Which 4 are you thinking?

Air, how long you talking the best the region has seen in awhile in players? If you are talking within the decade, then I would kindly diagree with you. The top players in the region have come out of Rowan, Russell and Ashland, the teams that always make up one half of the region championship, if not the whole championship.

Furthermore, this area's soccer teams have gone down hill since I was around. I believe the talent isn't just as good as it used to be. I believe these past couple of years have been down for the soccer community.

I think you are both right in some ways. Read it, you are correct in where the top players have come from until the last couple of years. I think Boyd County has started developing some skilled players in recent years. I do believe their talent level is at least even and maybe a little above the rest of the area. But I do also think that overall our area is down some. We are nowhere near being competitive with the rest of the state, and may never be. Not enough of a pool to choose from.

Black and the other forward. Also a decent center mid and defender. Can't remember names.

Zach Vincent, Jonah Black and Ryan Whitt for Boyd are forces to be reckond with. There's also a couple others I can't remember their names. Boyd needs to be watched. I think Ashland and Russell are up there too. Watch out for Boyd it they can get a tougher schedule they'll go far. Haven't seen their schedule for this year. Anyone know anything about it?

I don't disagree. All 3 are strong. Unless I am mistaken though, haven't they all played club ball together for years? So, I expect them to be good. The majority of kids in our area aren't given those kinds of opportunities.I bet there are kids at every high school that could be as good or better if they had the same chances. Nothing against those 3. I just wish other kids got the same kinds of opportunities.

There are some opportunities starting to pop up. It is definitely a slow process. Sometimes it takes a little luck and being in the right place at the right time to find a quality team to play for. It also takes dedication and sacrifice. If these boys have been playing for years, all of the above probably happened. Kudos to them. There is a local club now too that kids can play for.

You got to start somewhere. Although I think these 3 kids play for a club in WV that does pretty well, a lot of kids are playing for EKFC, so it looks like soccer is growing in my opinion. Don't forget, there has also been a district realignment.

Russell, Ashland, Boyd County are still in the same district I think. Greenup, East Carter, and West Carter were changed. I think Rowan is still in the same one. No change in which is the toughest district in this region. It will be interesting to watch. I've asked around. Supposedly Boyd has toughened up their schedule, including preseason tournaments, but I still haven't seen anything official. Is their coach any good? I don't know much about him. Are these 3 kids really good? I guess it remains to be seen of they are really ready to compete with Ashland and Russell.

All 3 are decent players. Black is one of those rare kids that is good at any sport he plays, Whitt has always been a good soccer player. Vincent has also always been pretty good, but battled size until recently. Boyd also has a pretty stout defense.I still like Russell to win the region, though. They are just always ready to play come post season.

I think Boyd has gained alot of confidence in the past year or so. They really had great ball control last year and with the players playing basically year round in travel games it really keeps their skills sharp. Just watch....This will be their year if they play smart and as a team. They have some heavy hitters that really need to show what they've got.
