Insider,
I see that you mentioned that more layoffs were coming in November and more soon after that. Have you heard a total of how many KDMC is planning to "layoff" in total? I know they fired 400 yesterday and I have heard, before it is over and done with, that there could be as many as 1300 terminated. Any idea?

While everyone is bashing Mr. Jackson and KDMC, please take time to remember that, not long ago, KDMC was a hospital with less than 1,700 employees. Mr. Jackson and his staff grew the company took as of a few weeks ago, KDMC was inching very close to 5,000 employees. KDMC is the only employer in the region to show such growth.
In fact, KDMC, even after today's layoffs, remains the largest employer between lexington, KY and Charleston, WV. A friend of mine made a very astute observation. He said that over the last 12 months, and including today's reduction in staff, KDMC has a net increase in new jobs for the year.
I feel bad for those who lost their jobs but let's tread lightly - don't bite the hand that feeds the region by providing quality jobs and excellent patient care.
Wonderful! I could not have said it better. Mr. Jackson is a man of vision and he took us along with him now for a very long time. As we contiue to support our hospital and it's growth there will be more jobs again. Support the workers who remain and prayers for all in the KDMC family. God Bless!

I'm not from Ashland, infact... it took me an hour and ten minutes to drive from my house in WV to work at KDMC. I recently graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing this past May- I took a job at KDMC because they were the only hospital in this area hiring new nurses. I did everything they told me to do- I applied for a Kentucky license, I didn't even fool with applying for licensure through West Virginia. I was employed under the circumstances that I passed a drug screen, a physical and I completed the requirements to achieve a Kentucky License for Registered Nursing- these requirements include passing the NCLEX (licensing exam), taking and passing an HIV/AIDS education class, and completing 120 clinical time hours. I started work at KDMC on July 6th. I was "laid off" on July 27th, I only had the opportunity to complete 48 of my 120 hours. I am an unemployed provisional licensed nurse.

During my FIRST DAY of orientation, Fred Jackson came in and spoke to my residency class, "St. Mary's is losing money, Cabell is losing money, SOMC is losing money, OLBH is losing money. KDMC is the only hospital in the tri-state region not in the red. I think you all are in a pretty secure place."
During the second week of my residency, rumors were going around like crazy. Our supervisor came in to put those rumors "to rest." I told her infront of 49 other classmates that I had heard this all before, because I had interviewed for a job at St. Mary's and they ended up not hiring any GNs. She told me, and the rest of my group, that "Obviously St. Mary's does bad business, and we don't do that here at KDMC. Your job is secure- we have put a great deal of money into you all, why would we do that and turn around and fire you?"
Our residency ended two weeks after that statement. Something needs to be done about these people.
I will be a December SMMC grad likely with no local job to go to. I started externing in May with KDMC and either Fred or one of the VP's (can't remember, don't care) came in and said the same load of crap to our orientation class, bragging and trashing the other hospitals for being in financial trouble and that they were not. UnREAL.

Everyone keeps saying "I'll never go back". First off I'm sorry to those who lost their jobs. But, KDMC still has over 4000 well qualified employees who cares a great deal about their patients and needs their job. If everyone protests going there, You will only put 4000+ more employees to the curb. What will that solve? Support those who still have their jobs and don't give KDMC the excuse to add more cuts to the list.
I know that this was very difficult for the managers. My manager was very upset and didn't want to tell her employees but she had to or she could have been sent packing as well.

That's what put us out of work in the first place (supposedly)...if you don't want to put money in Fred's pocket go to Bellefonte, or SOMC...anywhere but there.

Jesus christ, you retards and your 7 days. GET OVER IT. The people that NEED to know about the 7 days, probably already know.
Why would you give someone 7 days notice that they're losing their job. That would give them 7 days to intentionally screw things up or steal stuff. That is completely stupid.

This is a very sad time for alot of families in the surrounding area. My heart goes out to all of you who lost your job and I will keep you in my prayers.
I don't work for KDMC, never have and would never want to. Why fix something if it's not broken? Why buy up so much property, buildings, houses, the ongoing adding on to the hospital and other businesses? There was no need to any of that. That was money that could've been used for what a hospital should stand for and that is "CARING FOR PATIENTS". You walk into certain areas of KDMC and it's like walking into a 5 star hotel. How about being a 5 star hospital with putting what is important 1st, which should be the quality care of people. Not buy the most expensive paint, flooring, couches, tv, computers, a grand piano, flower arrangements and the list goes on and on. Don't blame the fact that people didn't pay their hospital or doctor bills on the reason behind people losing their jobs. It seems that the many people running KDMC clearly prefer looks over care when it comes to managing a hospital. That of course being the reason they make the BIG bucks. The problem starts in Management (president, vice president, etc...)with any company. Making the big bucks seems to always go to a persons head, they are good at giving orders but never having to do the actual work themselves. This is not something that just happened over night, and to disrepect so many people who dedicated their lives and time to help make Kings Daughts a place we all "thought" was a wonderful place to go. It certainly wasn't the president or vice presidents that patients were coming to see, it was the quality care given by nurses, doctors and etc...This goes to show you that Money is the fruit of all evil..
Don't kid yourself. The problem is not KDMC management it's a little higher up... like the White House. It's the president's healthcare initiatives that are causing this problem. KDMC is a good organization. The stuff going on here now has been happening for the last two years (and more) in other organizations. KDMC has just been able to delay it longer due in part to good leadership. The organization hasn't changed over the last 14 years. It's the government turning their greedy eyes toward owning healthcare. They have made it increasingly difficult to get paid and to boot cut the amount that they're paying. They couldn't possibly be trying to intentionally crash healthcare so we can have universal healthcare, could they? And I wonder how Andy Stern (the head of SEIU and the man who has visited the white house more than anyone else) would be benefiting from this? and by the way the quote is, "The LOVE of money (or power, for that matter) is the root of all evil"

ND, Ky.(WSAZ)– Reduction in force letters are going out to a number of employees at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
NewsChannel 3’s Randy Yohe has spent the day in Ashland and has confirmed the layoffs with a number of employees. He was also given a copy of the letter employees are receiving.
WSAZ has made numerous calls into adminstrators to get an exact number of employees being laid off. We're told KDMC will release a statement after they have taken care of their employees.
The letter employees are receiving states,“KDMC has made the difficult decision that a reduction in force is necessary. The decision is critical for the future of King’s Daughters and our community…We sincerely wish we had another option, but the steps being taken are in response to economic exigencies such as the recession, reimbursement decreases and a significant increase in the number of patients that are unable to pay for medical care.”
The letter also indicates the layoffs are effective immediately.
Employees say the layoffs impact a number of departments.
Ashland's Mayor says he belives several hundred employees are losing their job.
The union representing a number of workers at the hospital has called a 4:30 press conference to discuss the layoffs.
Hey Randy Yohe, one of those employees that you confirmed got laid off, you know the one on your video on the wsaz website that's crying talking about his kids, Clint Salmons. Yeah, funny thing... he still works at KDMC. Turns out he's a big union guy and was just putting on a show. Next time maybe you should check your facts. And while you're at it, if you really are a journalist, why not ask this question, "Could this down turn have anything to do with the President's healthcare initiative?"

You should take your own advice and understand WTF your talking about. The bush tax cuts are for those who make 250,000 a year. Not exactly working class. Idiot
not true at all. look at your check now and then again after the tax-cut expires. and be sitting down when you do. That was just propaganda that was pushed to make it out to be 'tax-cuts for the wealthy'.
